Beginning in the early 1950s, Senator Joseph McCarthy released a monumental rampage across the United States. For fear of governmental infiltration by Communists, an outbreak of accusations swept the nation as a result of the Wisconsin senator, and helped create what is known as the second Red Scare (“McCarthyism”) Joseph McCarthy was born November 14, 1908 in Grand Chute, Wisconsin to dairy farmers, lived an average life until the age of sixteen. At this point in time, McCarthy dropped out of school until 1929, when he decided to go back and finish high school. After completing the general education requirements, McCarthy applied to practice law at Marquette University. After receiving a law degree, he practiced law in the Wisconsin area from 1935-1939. When 1940 came around, McCarthy managed to land a spot in the circuit-court as a judge (“Joseph R. McCarthy”). Taking a break from his circuit-court judge position, Joseph McCarthy left to join the Marines during World War II. Through this branch of military, McCarthy achieved the rank of Captain before making his way back to the United States to further pursue a political career. Once returning home, McCarthy beat Robert M. Follette Jr. for the Republican senatorial nomination. After winning for the nomination, McCarthy went on to win the actual position for Senator against the Democratic candidate Howard McMurray in 1946 (“Joseph Raymond McCarthy”). Going an uneventful four years, the major attention came on February 9, 1950 when the Senator gave the Lincoln Day address in Wheeling, Virginia. Through this speech, McCarthy claimed to have the names of over 200 State Department employees who were members of the Communist party. To follow the accusations, the Senator was further... ... middle of paper ... ....d. Web. 17 Feb. 2014. Ferrell, Robert H., and Peter Szatmar. "The Villains Of The 'Red Scares' Of 1950." When the Tydings Committee issued a majority report dismissing all of McCarthy’s allegations and condemning them as “a fraud and a hoax perpetrated on the Senate of the United States and the American people.” Republican members of the American sub-committee condemned the majority report and the Democrats who signed it and McCarthy turned his defeat into a victory through the great publicity he received. Soon after Tydings report was considered pro-Communist. Like the Salem Witch Trials lack of substantial proof, many people were willing to believe McCarthy’s charges without any evidence. Soon world events seemed to be playing into McCarthy’s hands and he could use it all against the Truman administration. McCarthy’s fame grew and he because more careless, and instead of hinting nameless lists, he started naming names.
...that people can yet again fear that the communists might attack and send spies within to destroy their beloved country. Take the evidence from the Ohio County Women’s Republican Club when McCarthy stimulated the fear that Communism will spread and their spies will overthrow the democracy through traitorous means. Take the evidence of the Truman’s Response to McCarthy, Truman stated that the Kremlin must have put McCarthy there to cause turmoil and that must be a reason why he must have caused the country to go into a red scare. Take the evidence of the cartoon from Herb Block, which showed McCarthy drive his car into innocent people who had no influence of the communist and were scared by McCarthy’s ways of finding communists. McCarthy wanted to be well known and decided to start the red scare so that everyone else can fear and be aware of the communist everywhere.
By the time Joseph McCarthy gave his Lincoln day speech the Red Scare in America was on full blast. Just a year prior to the speech the Soviets had successfully tested a nuclear bomb and China fell to the communists. There were problems both internationally with the Soviet incursion into Eastern Europe and domestically with Soviet spies in the United States. On February 9th 1950 this Senator from Wisconsin took advantage of the opportunity at his speech to the Republicans Women’s Club of Wheeling, West Virginia.
Through the 1940s and 1950s, America was beleaguered with anxieties about the menace of communism arising in Eastern Europe and China. Profiting out of such worries for the nation, young Senator Joseph McCarthy made an open charge that hundreds of "card-carrying" communists had penetrated the United States government. Although his allegations were found ultimately to be false and the Senate reproached him for improper ways, his ardent shakeup heralded as one of the most tyrannical eras in 20th-century American politics. While the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAA) had been formed in 1938 as a body to resist communists, McCarthy's charges enhanced the political nervousness of the epoch. The suspicious chase for moles, scandalously known as McCarthyism, made the life and work of a number of important cultural names in the U.S difficult, being branded as champions and supporters to leftist causes.
...y Wheeling speech created nationwide hysteria, and with its impeccable timing just days after the conviction of the State Official Alga Hiss for lying under oath about his association with the communist Soviet as a spy, fueled the fight on communism. (citation) McCarthy war on communism during the “Second Red Scare” did not leave any individual safe from accusations. He attacked government agents, entertainment industry workers, educators, union members, and alienated the left-wing Democrats. McCarthy helped to create the atmosphere of suspicion and panic with his growth in media coverage. McCarthy’s words made for big headlines and the media was quick to cover his stories. This exposure helped facilitate American approval of McCarthy and empowered him to make more accusations on those suspected of subversion. In 1953, McCarthy headed the Government Operations Commit
Joseph McCarthy, the junior senator from Wisconsin, began with little recognition and little power. He was relatively new to the game of politics and in order to climb the political ladder, he had to make a name for himself and do something noteworthy. He went about this in the form of accusing people of communism. He wanted to portray himself as a hero who was saving the future of America from the evil communists who lived amongst the American people. He played on the existing fear of communism and heightened it by accusing random people who, in truth, had no actual connections to the communist party. This situation gained McCarthy a lot of publicity and he became the
Joseph McCarthy was born on a country farm in a little town called Appleton in the state of Wisconsin. He was born on the fourteenth of November in 1908. He grew up with parents who were very devout Catholics. McCarthy was also the fifth child out of nine children. He grew up like any other child, but he dropped out of school at the age of fourteen to work. At first, he worked on his farm taking care of the chickens. After keeping the chickens, McCarthy managed a local grocery store in the city of Manawa, Wisconsin. Finally, McCarthy decided to return to high school. He went back in 1928 which would have made him twenty years old and still enrolled. After finishing high school, McCarthy attended college at a place called Marquette University. He then attended law school and became a lawyer after graduating (“Joseph McCarthy” 1).
Authors often have underlying reasons for giving their stories certain themes or settings. Arthur Miller’s masterpiece, The Crucible, is a work of art inspired by actual events as a response to political and moral issues. Set in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, The Crucible proves to have its roots in events of the 1950’s and 1960’s, such as the activities of the House Un-American Committee and the “Red Scare.” Though the play provides an accurate account of the Salem witch trials, its real achievement lies in the many important issues of Miller’s time that it dealswith.
Cormac McCarthy is an American best known for his many different novels. He was born in Providence , Rhode Island as Charles McCarthy Jr, but later in his life he decided to change his name to Cormac, which was after an Irish King, which also meant “son of Charles”(“Cormac McCarthy”, Biography.com). His parents had 6 children and he was the youngest of them all. In 1937, McCarthy’s father, Charles Joseph McCarthy was offered a job for the Tennessee Valley Authority to be a lawyer, which was the reason the family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee (“Biography”, Cormacmccarthy.com). Cormac McCarthy went to Catholic High School in Knoxville because his family raised him as Roman Catholic. After he graduated from high school, he went to college at the University of Tennessee where he majored in liberal arts from 1951 to 1952. He then left the university and joined the U.S. Air Force where he served two of his four years in Alaska as a radio show host(“Biography”, Cormacmccarthy.com).

Clearly, McCarthy's ambition for political power contributed to the United States society to a cold war that caused a stir in the nation.’’USA UU Encased in a tense Cold War with the Soviet Union, news of McCarthy's indictment of President Harry Truman's State Department caused nationwide turmoil’’(1).In the same way that fear also arose because persecutions were given to individuals and organizations accused of anti-communism.’’persecution of individuals and organizations accused of anti-communism’’.It was unclear why McCarthy was elected senator as he was supported by documents that were false.Clearly,
However, he did live a somewhat disadvantaged lifestyle during the 1960s and 1970s due to mediocre sales of some of his earlier novels, so perhaps that somehow loosely inspired the idea of a case filled with over two million dollars in cash (“Acclaimed Author”). He served as a member of the United States Air Force, and during that time, he may have been inspired to create stories such as No Country for Old Men and “The Sunset Limited.” The military helps develop a sense of awareness in many people, and this was likely present in McCarthy as well. Perhaps this consciousness showed McCarthy that the human condition is flawed, and morals are subjective, since these ideas are dominant in many of his works, including “The Sunset Limited” and No Country for Old
The McCarthy Era (1940’s- 1960’s) was a time of fear and turmoil. During this era, thousands of people were affected unjustifiably and the Movie “Trumbo” portrayed the hardships of the people. Hatred towards communism was a prevailing theme throughout the whole movie, breeding many other issues such as needless violence against communists and unfair job opportunities. Due to the media, censorship and propaganda strengthened the hatred towards communist ideals. Movie theatres displayed communism as evil and spread lies about how the goal of communists was world domination and to overtake America. No one had the right to express their opinions and beliefs if they had different opinions from the majority, and if they did there was no stopping people from giving them a rough time. “It will do you no good to search for heros or villians, there were only victims.” was what James Dalton Trumbo believed because no one was exempt from the problems in this period.
He displayed his distaste in McCarthyism in “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street”. The Characters of the show, the people who reside on Maple Street, are quick to go to blaming one another. Their quick ability to persecute others is similar to McCarthyism. People during post World War II were quick to prosecute others, because of McCarthyism. These actions are abundant in “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street,” for instance when the power goes off in the neighborhood, people turn on each other to figure out who caused the blackout. This insane paranoia led to these once peaceful neighbors and friends to begin suspecting each other of being the monsters who shut off all the power. Every little thing such as a working car, a light turning on, and even making a joke about being a monster caused the neighbors to all place suspicion on each other. And just as soon as one person thought someone was a monster, the rest of the neighborhood quickly agreed. This symbolizes McCarthyism in that people were just as frantic to accuse each other of being communists over minor
