The term community defined means a group of individuals socially connected through common interest, culture, or locality. In-groups and out-groups are a distinct characteristic of every community, because they allow for an individual to feel, to some degree, a sense of belonging or familiarity. When deciding within recent months to declare a major in Family and Consumer Sciences, unbeknownst to myself, I was joining an innovative community of Family and Consumer Science Majors. Seeking to complete degree requirements, friendship and rack up on some much needed community service hours; I decided to become a member of Winthrop’s Family and Consumer Science professional organization, WINFACS. This organization combined with my degree course work has instilled in me a growing sense of professionalism and a desire to actively engage in public and community services.
Family and Consumer Sciences is recognized as a powerful tool in unifying individuals to improve the lives of people, families, and communities. Our basic creed and ideology is to assist members of society in making informed decisions so they can achieve an optimal quality of life. As a member of Family and Consumer Science Major, I cannot envision a better way of completing that task than through participating in productive acts of community services. Our degree coursework and professional organization places a high value on voluntary service to the community and public and incorporates regular community outreach assignments, instilling in us the importance of community service. Within the “Ingroup and Outgroup” reading, I particularly connected with the idea arguing that we, as members of society, will identify ourselves with the group we are a part of and ...

... tools to become a well-professional and accomplish my goals of positively impacting individuals, families and communities. As a member of the Family and Consumer Science major and community, I embody the philosophies of professionalism and voluntary public service to the community. These underlying philosophies of Family and Consumer Sciences has provided me with experience and knowledge it take to successful navigate in the professional world, because I can effectively deal with multiple personalities and groups of people. A degree in Family and Consumer Science will ultimately provide me with the ability to extend my voice from the traditional domestic sphere to the professional sphere, something that was not possible fifty years ago. I believe that voice can enable communities, individuals, and families, therefore bettering the global human experience.

A community is to help and support each other to be successful. Everyone is involved in a certain community regardless of anything. A community I am commit with is CAMP from CSUMB which stands for College Assistance Migrant Program. My community is a federally funded program that assists first year freshmen who have a migrant background and students whose parents are seasonal farmworkers. CAMP assist their students with many useful services such as with a grant of up to 1,200 dollars. My community is very important to me for the reason they are guiding me to be successful while encouraging me to graduate from college. In my community we tend to communicate really often such as in the article "Learning to Serve" by Toni Mirabelli. As in the article, my community also communicates by using various literacy such as writing, reading , and speaking.
... integrity. Through the Community Action Program I visited two third grade classes at the elementary school that my company sponsors. The school is sorely lacking in funds and many of the children come from homes where their families are struggling to provide them with the skills necessary to succeed in school. I taught the students for five weeks about the variety of skills one must learn to run a business and how various businesses are needed for a city to function. Each classroom was comprised entirely of children from one of two different ethnic groups, but both were from homes where English was not the first language. I believe my affinity for developing relationships with and between people will be an asset both in the classroom and in the legal profession. I look forward to rising to the challenge of constant change and growth in the ever-evolving field of law.
The concerned camp believes that families are in decline due to the rapid changes that have happened in the past 25 years. Unprecedented levels of divorce, people having babies while not married, and also teenagers having babies have hurt families and quite possibly led into hunger. The concerned camp also believes that families have the most influence on the character and competence of children and adults (Bronfenbrenner, 1986). The concerned camp values parental commitment, marital fidelity, individual responsibility, and civic participation. They also believe that individualism overshadows or threatens these values. The concerned camp believes happiness is due to relatedness to others, investments in family, and commitments to the community. Evidence that supports the concerned camp is that many Americans are very concerned about the state of families and the well-being of children. They also believe that it is very important to be concerned about how the next generation is raised because they will be the future parents, workers, and citizens. They believe that our prosperity depends on investing in childrearing. In addition, the concerned camp...

An example of this community dynamic is the activities available for children: summer camp, sports, and involvement of the arts. These activities allow kids the opportunity to have a place to be curious and direct their energy toward a specific subject of their interest; eventually, when time does come for a child to go to college he or she will appreciate the skills developed in community colleges. Not only does Pierce provide children with a place for kids to unleash who they truly are but it allows parents of these children to facilitate the process for them. Community colleges allows parents the opportunity to take classes - like child development- to understand what specific topics their kids are thinking while exploring several subject which will potentially lead to a career. These courses provide a strong connection so when children ask their parents for guidance. Their parents will actually know what to do and will be ready to answer any question and will facilitate the process toward the pursuit of a college career. In, “The case for (community) college” by Christina Pazzanese she explains, ”I come from poverty, and I knew my parents were never going to be able to help me out with college.” (1). This piece of the article serves as Pazzanese’s hook to captivate the audience and to explain the fact that sometimes parents are not able to help

Community service is something that I have always engaged. In college, I worked with chemically dependent children as both a caretaker and a mentor. After I graduated, I taught at-risk children in a community youth outreach program. To remain involved and aware of the focus of my studies during my first year of law school, I volunteered at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center teaching youth their basic legal rights. Essentially, we strove to empower kids by providing practical information about the legal system and to help them develop more favora...
Growing up I had always wanted to create change and hoped to help for the greater good. During my time, so far, at the University of Calgary, some of the courses that I felt drawn to were in Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology; these subjects were some of the most fascinating subjects I hav...
Community service has been around since the existence of communities because communities often cannot exist with out the participation of their members. As stated before, community service began to be required in school systems in 1997 in Maryland. According to Kate McPpherson, director of Project Service Leadership in Vancover, WA, community service “… emphasizes the habits and skills of volunteerism” (McPherson 2002). While community service sounds good and beneficial for strengthening skills and membership in the community, it was met with poor results and strong opinions against its requirements. Simply requiring students to fulfill a certain amount of community service hours wasn’t enough, many students did not cooperate. It was found that incorporating community service activities into a class room sett...

Commitment to community is a requirement for contemporary Americans and vital to its survival. “Love thy neighbor as thyself” is the unselfish act of sharing: from a cup of sugar to a wealth of information to the guardianship of all children involved and the protection of every individual in that said community. Whether that community consists of the “Classic Neighborhood, those with a common set of goals, or those who share a common identity” the thread that holds this matrix together is always woven into the shared identity as well as responsibility of all involved. (Redmond, 2010). A community cannot continue to exist through the will of withdrawn individuals who arms only embrace themselves and have no involvement whatsoever with neighbors one door away.
This point states that you have to use the power of psychology to influence the community. It could be giving away to the community without asking something in return. This way, you could earn credibility and respect. Lewis Howes told in a podcast interview with Pat Flynn that he interviewed hundreds of experts and professionals and promoted others for three years and never asked for a return, and then people started asking him that whenever you need something, don 't hesitate to ask. He used that favor-card after three years while launching his e-book 'The School of Greatness ' and all those people loved to promote
Due to the many meanings of the word community, people have learned to substitute community for other words. Most of the definitions are common has in a society linked by common interests but, would you really say a buffalo community? Of course not, you would say a herd of buffalo. Unfortunately, community is really only used if someone were to be talking about where people live. Even the meanings of community don’t announce themselves when people use the word. Working with a service agency (YouVote), community is used quite a bit. We worked a lot with the community of Michigan Sate University. Would Michigan State University students all have common interests? We all have the common interest to come here but, not common degrees, or classes. If it’s different at MSU would it be different everywhere else?
A Community can be defined as a group of people who don’t just live in the same area, but also share the same interests, experiences and often concerns about the area in which they live. Often when individuals have lived on a street or in an area for a while they become familiar with each other and the issues surrounding them. Children often attend the same schools and grow up together, again sharing similar experiences. In some instances adults may work together, and quite commonly all community members will share the same doctors, dentists, hospitals, health visitors and other public services and facilities.
