Taming of the Shrew: Movie vs. Play - William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew is an interesting story that demonstrates the patriarchal ideas of how a marriage is suppose to be according to society, what is acceptable of a woman's role in a relationship. It's a story that has many things to show for it's been remade, and remade, even slightly altered to better relate to the teenage audience. The story is about two sisters Katherine and Bianca. Bianca has a suitor who would like to marry her, Lucentio, but the only way that he will be able to marry her is if her older sister is married first....   [tags: World Literature] 792 words

Kathrinas Evolution in Taming Of The Shrew by Shakespeare - Kathrinas Evolution in Taming Of The Shrew by Shakespeare Katherina in my opinion is smart and quick witted. I do not feel sorry for her because she brought her situation on herself by letting Bianca and her father harass her. Katherina is shown to be a shrew at the start of the play. As we delve into the play we find that Katherina is not really a shrew but a caring and loving person. She acts shrewish because she feels inferior to her younger sister who has three suitors. Katherina acts like a shrew most of the time because it is the only way she knows how to get anyone's attention, positive or negative....   [tags: Papers] 515 words

Taming of the Shrew - Feminism and the Misunderstood Shakespeare - The Taming of the Shrew as Feminist Manifesto. Some have made the claim that Shakespeare was pro-feminist and did all he could to illuminate the wrong done to women of his time by creating some overwhelmingly misogynistic characters. This was his way of showing men the errors of their ways and shaming them into showing women more respect.  This is an interesting hypothesis for a number of reasons.  First of all, there are no signs that it worked, if Shakespeare did indeed intend to reform men.  Could the Bard, supposing that he was trying to shame men into changing, influence men in this manner?  Can we blame him if he failed?  Secondly, and by far more interesting to me, is that, in some cases, feminists seem to be more interested in martyring the Bard than in promoting feminist agendas What proof do we have that Shakespeare was really that enlightened....   [tags: Feminism Feminist Women Criticism] 491 words

Comparing the Role of Women in Taming of the Shrew and Twelfth Night - The Role of Women in Taming of the Shrew and Twelfth Night      Many critics have lambasted the female characters in Shakespeare's plays as two-dimensional and unrealistic portrayals of subservient women.  Others have asserted that the roles of women in his plays were prominent for the time and culture that he lived in.  Two works, Taming of the Shrew, and Twelfth Night, stand out particularly well in regards to Shakespeare's use of female characters.  After examining these two plays, one will see that Shakespeare, though conforming to contemporary attitudes of women, circumvented them by creating resolute female characters with a strong sense of self.                The Taming of the Shrew is one of Shakespeare's most famous plays, and has weathered well into our modern era with adaptations into popular television series such as Moonlighting.  For all the praises it has garnered throughout the centuries, it is curious to note that many have considered it to be one of his most controversial in his treatment of women.   The "taming" of Katherine has been contended as being excessively cruel by many writers and critics of the modern era.  George Bernard Shaw himself pressed for its banning during the 19th century (Peralta).  The subservience of Katherine has been labeled as barbaric, antiquated, and generally demeaning.   The play centers on her and her lack of suitors.  It establishes in the first act her shrewish demeanor and its repercussions on her family.  It is only with the introduction of the witty Petruchio as her suitor, that one begins to see an evolution in her character.   Through an elaborate charade of humiliating behavior, Petruchio humbles her and by the end of the play, she will instruct other women on the nature of being a good and dutiful wife....   [tags: comparison compare contrast essays]

Comparing Katharina, of The Taming of the Shrew and Beatrice of Much Ado About Nothing - Comparing Shakespeare’s Katharina, of The Taming of the Shrew and Beatrice, of Much Ado About Nothing Shakespeare’s Katharina, of The Taming of the Shrew and Beatrice, of Much Ado About Nothing, are very similar characters.  Each is plagued with unrequited love, and depressed by their inability to woo the suitor of their choosing.  Neither will accept the passive female role expected by society. Yet, both women seem to accept their role as wife by the conclusion.  Upon further examination, one will find that Beatrice is a much more complex character.  One would have to agree with the critic who said, "Katharina is a character sketched in bold, rapid stokes, with none of Beatrice's sophistication, verbal brilliance, or emotional depth."  In Taming of the Shrew, the first introduction to Katharina, by Gremio and Hortensio, tells that she is a shrew, (1.I .54-60) and that she will never find a groom.  When she first speaks we see her responding to these insults, but she was provoked so her words seem appropriate.  Yet as the play continues we see Katharina tying up Bianca, (2.I.29) and hitting her.  This can be rejected as sibling rivalry, but later Katharina slaps Petruchio when he is trying to woo her (2.I.214)....   [tags: comparison compare contrast essays]

Stereotypical Views Held About Women by Elizabethan Men in William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing - Stereotypical Views Held About Women by Elizabethan Men in William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing Introduction ============ Much Ado About Nothing exemplifies a kind of deliberately puzzling title that seems to have been popular in the late 1590s. Indeed, the play is about nothing; it merely follows the relationships of Claudio and Hero, and in the end, the play culminates in the two other main characters falling in love, which, because it was an event that was quite predictable, proves to be much ado about nothing The pronunciation of the word "nothing" would, in the late 16th Century, have been "noting," and so the title also apparently suggests a pun on the word, "noting," and on the use of the word "note" as an expression of music....   [tags: Papers Shakespeare Much Ado Nothing Essays] 3293 words

Shakespeare uses the idea of disguise in his ‘Taming of the Shrew’ The minor theme of the play is appearance vs reality. Throughout the drama, things are never really as they seem. Katherine appears to be a real shrew, but it is all a cover-up for the hurt she feels. Bianca appears to be a self-sacrificing angel, but she is really a spoiled young lady who can quickly revert to shrewish behavior....   [tags: essays papers] 455 words

Portrayal of Women in William Shakespeare's Plays - Portrayal of Women in William Shakespeare's Plays William Shakespeare's characterization of women varies immensely from one comedy to another. In his works, Taming of the Shrew, The Merchant of Venice, and Much Ado About Nothing, he portrays both dominant and submissive women. Ultimately, Shakespeare examines the complexity of women by displaying the vast array of attitudes, emotions, and their treatment and reaction to men as well as refuting the typical subservient wife role. Essay on Women in the Plays of William Shakespeare - Women in the Plays of Shakespeare        By paying close attention to the woman's part in Shakespeare's plays, we can see his works with a new perspective. But we must remember that we are examining a male dramatist of extraordinary range writing in a remote period when women's position was in obvious ways more restricted and less disputed than in our own period. Sandra Gilbert writes in The Madwoman in the Attic that literature is defined as a mirror held up to society and nature, "the mimetic aesthetic that begins with Aristotle and descends through Shakespeare implies that the poet, like a lesser God, has made or engendered an alternative, mirror-universe in which he actually seems to enclose or trap shadows of reality" (Madwoman 5)....   [tags: Biography Biographies Essays]

Chaucer's Canterbury Tales Essay - Dominance and Control in the Wife of Bath - Dominance and Control in Chaucer's The Wife of Bath's Tale      The Wife of Bath, the main character in Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Wife of Bath's Tale" recognizes dominance over her husband as the main purpose of her life and her story.         The Wife of Bath is a controlling and headstrong woman.  She craves dominance over her husbands.  She believes that, in order to be her husband, the man must be subservient and that she is the head of the household.  Even thought she has been married five times, she has never let the man hold the upper hand.  Out of the five, "three were good husbands, two of them were bad" (Chaucer 224).  She was first married at the age of twelve and is now forty years old.  To be married at such a young age, one can only imagine that the marriage was either arranged for money or for a title.  The Wife of Bath recognizes that the key to survival for a fourteenth century woman is marriage, as shown in her having had five husbands and being married at the age of twelve.  The Wife of Bath is also not what a wife should be.  She torments her husbands by denying them sex until she gets what she wants, which is land and money.  When she does sleep with them, it always means "nothing," but for the older husbands it means their lives (Chaucer 224).  The Wife of Bath, in her mind, has the right to deny sex because it is she who hold the "'power of his body' not he" (Chaucer 223).  She even proudly admits that she had married men for their money and driven them to their end by her desire for sex.  She prays for Jesus to send men "who are meek and young and spirited in bed" (Chaucer 250).  The Wife of Bath will stop at nothing to get what she wants because dominance is what she lives for....   [tags: Wife of Bath Essays]
