Euthanasia Essay - The Immorality of Physician Assisted Suicide - The Immorality of Physician Assisted Suicide (Euthanasia) Euthanasia: the intentional killing by act or omission of a dependent human being for his or her alleged benefit, a highly controversial subject.  Assisted suicide: Someone provides an individual with the information, guidance, and means to take his or her own life. When a doctor helps another person to kill themselves it is called "physician assisted suicide" (Euthanasia.com 1).  This widely debated topic of assisted suicide is immoral and unethical in today's standards.  Most people who commit suicide or wish to commit suicide are mentally ill and make impaired judgments.  Many of those who wish to commit suicide are really just reaching out for help, and disorders such as depression, which lead to attempted suicide, are treatable (Pretzer 1).  For those people suffering with chronic pain from, there have been many advances in pain control and management.  Today in the United States, Physician Assisted Suicide or PAS is illegal in all states except for Oregon.  If PAS were to be legalized in the rest of the country, it would cause major problems.  In the one state that Physician Assisted Suicide is legal there have been major problems and any unhappy people.  Mentally ill patients have been stereotyped as crazy people who have to be locked away so they don't hurt themselves or anyone else.  This is a reality only for a very small portion of mentally handicapped persons.  The majority of the mentally ill are fully capable of living on their own and making just decisions.  They are not a danger to anyone except themselves.  These people are classified as clinically depressed and have a chemical imbalance in their brains that impairs their perspective about their lives.  People suffering from depression are the ones who generally commit suicide or consider committing suicide on a daily basis (O'Bannon 1).  The scary part is that these people may not express their feelings and may hide behind a mask of falseness.  The judgment of these people may also be severely impaired at times and they may make rash and unwise decisions (Cannon 1).  They may choose to take their own lives or consult a physician about the possibility of Physician Assisted Suicide.  These people could be helped if the proper steps are taken and they are reached in time.  Having the availability of PAS to ordinary civilians increases the number of unnecessary deaths as well as suicides, now it is just easier to get away with (Langley 1).  There is technology and medicine that exists today that can control pain effectively.  While there are still some obstacles, some major efforts have been made to overcome them.  Many medical personnel are uninformed and may use outdated or unsatisfactory methods and often do not properly relieve their patient's pain.  As a result, many patients see Physician Assisted Suicide as the only way out.  For patients in severe pain, administration of an opioid, in particular morphine, has been proven to provide effective pain management for the majority of patients.    A major technological advance in pain management and administering pain medication is called Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA).  With PCA, there is a pump that delivers a constant flow of the drug and also allows the patient to administer their own doses in emergencies.  This reduces delays such as having to wait for a nurse to help.  Another advance is the 72 hour patch which allows the patient to sleep through the night by administering a constant flow of morphine through the patch.  That way the patient doesn't have to get up in the middle of the night to take more medication.  If patients and health care providers were more educated about the advances in pain management, there would be no need for physician assisted suicide (O'Bannon, Burke 2)....   [tags: Euthanasia Physician Assisted Suicide] :: 6 Sources Cited	1115 words (3.2 pages)	Powerful Essays	[preview]
