Ghost Story of College Ghost Lure - College Ghost Lore If one were to take the beltway to I-270 north, about an hour north of Washington, DC one would arrive at a town called Emmitsburg, Maryland. Is the town haunted. I collected several stories from a senior in college who is from Emmitsburg. This senior is a white female. The stories I collected, many of which have to do with the small Catholic college indicate a rich ghost lore in the town. There are several stories that this woman told me concerning her hometown. Ghost Story of Santa Fe Ghost Trail - Santa Fe Ghost Trail As I sat down with the narrator in his dorm on a Sunday afternoon—not the most appropriate time for ghost stories—he told me this well known ghost story from New Mexico. The storyteller is an 18-year-old male freshman majoring in international relations who is from Bethesda, Maryland. He is biracial with an American father and a Taiwanese mother. Born in California and raised in Colorado, the storyteller is a converted Christian. The teller was in the Boy Scouts, which is where this story comes from: There’s this really small highway town in New Mexico called Cimarron, and it’s small now but in the late 19th century it was a bustling crossroads for all sorts of people – gold speculators, ranchers, oilmen, and especially those vagrant characters, like Billy the Kid, seeking refuge from whatever lawman was on his tail....   [tags: Ghost Stories Urban Legends]

Tale of a Ghost Sighting - Ghost Sighting Elements of the supernatural have long enhanced the folklore of many cultures. Stories of ghosts, magic, and so-called aliens are transferred from generation to generation, sparking our imagination and uncovering our deepest fears. Ghost Children of San Antonio - Ghost Children of San Antonio The legend of the Ghost Children of San Antonio dates back to the first half of the 20th century, with the majority of accounts placing its origins within a period extending from the 1930’s to the 1950’s. The story is based on a supposed freak accident involving a school bus full of children. As the story goes, the school bus stalled over a set of train tracks and was subsequently hit by an oncoming freight train, killing everyone on board the bus. Basics of Ghost Stories - Basics of Ghost Stories INTRODUCTION The ghost story writer has to attract the reader's attention straight away. The way story begins is important and often links with the rest of the narrative. The opening of a short story must try to engage the reader quickly. I think all ghost stories should always have a lot of suspense in it, to create anticipation and excitement. Some symbolic object/place for example a knife, a key must play a major part in the narrative. Essay on Sex and Dominance in The Ghost Road - Sex and Dominance in  The Ghost Road         Pat Barker's The Ghost Road is a masterful literary integration of sex and war.  The novel's protagonist, the lascivious, bisexual Billy Prior once remarks:  "Whole bloody western front's a wanker's paradise," a statement with far-reaching implications concerning aggression and eroticism (Barker 177).  The novel concludes a successful trilogy, beginning with Regeneration (1991) and The Eye in the Door (1993).  Winner of the prestigious Booker Prize Award in 1995, The Ghost Road delves into many standard Booker motifs, such as war, the British class system, memory, and childhood, but Barker revitalizes these worn subjects.  With prostitutes, lecherous priests, and the naked body, she intersects the motifs of sex and dominance.  Homoeroticism, pedophilia, and prostitution deepen the dark hues of her narrative, fleshing out what might otherwise have been a tired war novel.  It is at the intersection of sex, dominance and gender that The Ghost Road earns its place among the Booker greats....   [tags: Ghost Road Essays]

The Child in Flannery O’Connor’s A Temple of the Holy Ghost - The Child in Flannery O’Connor’s A Temple of the Holy Ghost “None of their ways were lost on the child” (236). This passage introduces the main character only named the “child” in Flannery O’Connor’s short story “A Temple of the Holy Ghost” and indeed she is influenced not only by the two girls that this line refers to, but by everything she hears and sees. She is very direct and speaks without thinking, for example when she asks her mother to invite Mr. “Cheat,” an admirer of Miss Kirby’s, the schoolteacher who is lodging with her family....   [tags: Temple Holy Ghost] 897 words

Ghost Story of the Green Rat - The Green Rat This story was first told to me and my older brother by my uncle when we were still relatively young children (about 4 and 8 years old). We were riding in the car and he was telling the story to entertain and scare us. At the time he was in his mid-30s and living in Olney, MD, as were we. He called the story “The Green Rat,” and after I talked to him about the story, he said that it was a scary tale that he first heard on a camping trip with the Boy Scouts in California when he was in 7th grade (approximately 1966 when he was about 12 years old)....   [tags: Ghost Stories Urban Legends]

Ghost Story of Bloody Mary - Bloody Mary I remember enacting an urban ritual with my friends back in middle school. Giggling and squealing, running in and out of the bathroom, not really believing but still terrified by the possibilities. It was less a story with a moral than it was just a sleepover prank. Needless to say I wasn’t surprised that when I asked a roommate to relate an urban legend to me over lunch one day that she chose that of “Bloody Mary." Ghost Stories - What comes to mind when thinking about the phrase “ghost” stories. For many interested in items of pop culture, the visual interpretations of ghost stories that capture the horror and psychological thrilling motives like the movies Poltergeist, The Ring, or Paranormal Activity often find mention. These movies gain viewers because they lend a reference that demonstrates both their ability to become infamously loved and also make people terrified. Many of these same people also love these “ghost” stories because of their explanations of what happens to someone’s spirit after they die....   [tags: Literary Analysis]

Hamlet says that: "There's a divinity that shapes our ends, / Rough-hew them how we will." Hamlet ends Claudius by poison that he prepared for Hamlet and poisoned the Queen ironically. Hamlet ends up with overwhelming death which puts an end to hostility, hatred, betrayal, and hypocrisy, which is obvious when they kill each other until it catches Hamlet himself....   [tags: Shakespearean Literature ]

The Ghost in "Hamlet" - The ghost is the first thing we are introduced to in the play. It is seen by two guards and Horatio. The guards first refer to it as "the thing" then the "apparition." This is a deliberate ambiguity used to show the fear of the guards and to evoke the curiosity of the audience. The ghost is a very important character in Hamlet though it appears in few scenes. Its importance rises from the fact that it is through the ghost that we get to know how the father of Hamlet died before the play started....   [tags: European Literature] 338 words

There is plenty of evidence in the play to prove that the ghost is real. In the first act the ghost appears to two soldiers Marcellus, and Barnardo, as well as to Hamlet’s friend Horatio, who is a very credible and intelligent person.
