“There is an underside to every age about which history does not often speak, because history is written from records left by the privileged,” –Howard Zinn. The author of the book, “A People’s History of the United States” shares U.S. History from the infrequent viewpoint, “history from the standpoint of others” (pg. 10). The United States of America is one of the most powerful countries in the world. It is also a nation rooted in rich history, built on the pillars laid by the founding fathers of America. It was first discovered in 1492 by Christopher Columbus, who accidentally reached the shores of America when he set out on an expedition to India in search of gold, pearls, and spices. Some of the important historic events that changed the shape of American history are the American Revolution and the Civil War.

The American Revolution and the Civil War

The American Revolution, also known as the American Revolutionary War, occurred between 1775-1783, when the American Patriots stood united against the British rule and fought for freedom. Apart from suppressing loyalism and declaring King George as a tyrant, the Patriots fought monarchy and aristocracy with ideologies of republicanism and liberalism. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Alexander Hamilton were some of the heroes of the American Revolution.

On the other hand, the Civil War was fought between the northern and southern states of the United States and was a key event in America’s historical awareness. While the northern states wanted to stay united, the southern states wanted independence. The southern states wanted to be free to make their own laws because they feared that they might lose their right to own slaves otherwise. This gave rise to a major conflict that played an important role in shaping American history. While the American Revolution created America, the Civil War established what kind of country America would be.

Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, Harry S. Truman, John F Kennedy, George Bush, and Barack Obama are some of the famous presidents in American history.
