12,800 males and 10,700 females are diagnosed with lung cancer each year.(CancerCa)The lungs are vital organs in our body which are located in the chest. Lungs bring oxygen into our body and release carbon dioxide.( oncologychannelCom) The lungs are respiratory organs that are important because they take in fresh oxygen to your blood which is then carried to your cells. Cancer occurs when mitosis goes “wild”. This means that cell division keeps dividing uncontrollably. This happens because some of the genes in the cell have been damaged or lost. (CancerhelpOrg) Oncogenes are mutated genes that promote cell division. Tumour suppressor genes are genes that slow cell division down and cause them to die.(lungcancer.aboutCom) Lung cancer is when there is an malignant growth of the lung. There were many genes and chromosomes associated with lung cancer but two genes that affect it the most are p53 tumour suppressor and ras oncogenes.
Ras genes are the most important gene out of all the oncogenes. This gene is located on the 11th chromosome and its job is to act as a switch which relays signals. When receptors on the cell surface are activated it is because the ras is switched on. The ras then sends signals which tells the cell to grow. The ras is not activated if the receptors aren’t stimulated which means the cells aren’t told to grow. In the case of lung cancer, ras is permanently switched on whether the receptors on the cell surface are stimulated or not. This results in the cell continuously growing, which is a major step in the development of cancer. (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) The p53 gene is located on chromosome 17. This gene is a tumour suppressor which is linked to lung cancer.(ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) Compared to ras, p53 works ...

...smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals. When this chemicals are inhaled the affect the cells in the lungs, windpipe and air passages, which are all needed for respiration. Radon is an example of the chemicals that affect the lungs. Radon is a health hazard that is found in the air and can causes lung cancer by inhaling it.(guide4living.com)Asbestos, which is used when making fireproof objects and even pollution can also cause lung cancer!
Lung cancer is the leading death for men and women. Statistics say 23,400 Canadians will be diagnosed with lung cancer, and about 20,500 people will die from it. Fourteen percent of people with cancer are diagnosed with lung cancer and twenty-seven percent of patients die from lung cancer. (cancer.ca) As the knowledge of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes advances, the knowledge of lung cancer and possible cure advance
Lung Cancer Currently, the United States of America contain thousands of people who are battling with diseases every day. On a yearly basis, a family member does the unthinkable by putting a member of their family to rest. One disease that kills numerous people each year is lung cancer. To a majority of individuals, the thought of lung cancer is devastating while to others it causes confusion and a lack of understanding. Why? What is lung cancer? What causes lung cancer? These are common questions
Lung cancer is considered to be the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. There are approximately about 180,000 cases that are diagnosed in America, considering that 90% dies thru lung cancer alone. Despite of its number, it is the most preventable of all the cancers. Like every cancer it spreads out fast if not taken seriously, this due the abnormal growth of cells. The abnormal cell growth often leads to the formation of tumor. This cancer is very common and very deadly. The following common
our health is affected by the negative impacts, such as air pollution, water and food. Science is developing in much faster way but at the same time number of problems are also arising. Problems like infectious diseases, diseases without any treatment or whose treatments are available up to a lesser extent such as Lung cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer, ovarian cancer, pancreatic cancer, penile cancer etc. Cancer is responsible for one in seven deaths. It is epidemic disease thefore its consequences
Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. Tumors are then created and interfering with the digestive, nervous and circulatory systems. It is one of the most leading causes of death, reaching at about 8.2 million deaths in 2012. It is expected that cancer will rise from 14 million to 22 million within the next 2 decades. With over 100 cancer research centers in the United States studying how to treat this disease, people need to understand the importance of donating also with
INTRODUCTION In this essay I will be discussing Chemotherapy; the problems it causes, what it does to your body, how it affects the cancer cells, it’s progression and use over the decades as well as why it’s used as a treatment for Cancer. Chemotherapy was first introduced in World War ll however it wasn’t intended to cure or treat Cancer. During the war it was discovered that the Naval Personnel were exposed to nitrogen mustard gas, which later became apparent to the medical profession that it
age where cancer has become a household word. We all have experienced this catastrophe with at least one relative, friend, colleague or someone we hold dear. This is no strange fact that in India cancer cases have been surging every year. With advancements in medical science, we have been able to fight with it to the very best that we can. In the wake of this, a lot of cancer care hospitals are being set up, both private and government. The IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) has reported
Government plays a great deal of roles with the innovation models of delivery care and financing to support the care and treatments of therapies to patients who needs it intensively. Government helps to fund the research company to come up with better advance diagnostic tools and slow discoveries for new treatments for diseases. For example: Governments funded money for research in cancer which is one of the highest
all different from one of another, hundreds of those chemicals are toxic and as much as 70 (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013) are known to cause cancer. Since second hand smoke is an epidemic across the world there are many ways it can affect a person’s wellbeing. Second hand smoke can and may cause heart disease, lung cancer, SIDS and many others. Second hand smoke is committed when the adult or child is near the smoker; smoke then travels from the end of the cigarette or the breath
people are diagnosed with oral cancer in the US per year. Oral cancer is a cancer that is more common in people over the age of 45, but can occur at any age. the branch of statistics responsible for interpreting the scientific data that is generated in the health sciences, including public health. Biostatistics has made major contributions to our understanding of countless public health issues, such as: Chronic diseases, pollution and death rates. When an assertion is made such as "fast foods are causing obesity", or "smoking causes lung cancer," statistics is central in determining how valid these statements are. Biostatisticians have worked to create
further study and test stem cells and some people don’t agree with this. The end result of using embryonic stem cells is someone being able to walk again, someone remembering the names of their children, and someone being able to say that he beat cancer. Stem cell research is beneficial to society and should be accepted into labs all around the world. Only the most pristine of labs get to receive stem cells to research and test. In the United States of America, most of these labs are usually at
Loria and Jenifer Welsh from Business Insider, marijuana has many positive effects which are treating glaucoma, help reverse the carcinogenetic effects of tobacco and improve lung health, THC a chemical found in marijuana can slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease, and CBD a chemical found in marijuana stops cancer from spreading. “Cancer affects all of us, whether you’re a daughter, mother, sister, friend, coworker, doctor, or patient” (Aniston). Cancer treatment is a very sore subject, but many people are diagnosed with this disease. However, doctors have ways of finding cancer and treating it. Cancer is a very serious issue that needs to be dealt with in each person who is diagnosed with it. To understand the solution, one has to know the causes, effects, and problems of cancer. To understand the problem of cancer treatment
When one hears the word “cancer”, thoughts about how their previous life is about to change cloud the mind, but when one hears the word cancer for their child, it is a whole different outlook; the affects of childhood cancer are not only taken on by the patients, but also by their families; the affects can range from emotionally to physically, socially to financially, and even educationally. “Childhood cancer is considered rare, especially compared with adults. Still it’s the leading cause of death
the body. It consists of the heart, which powers the whole process, the veins, arteries, and capillaries, which deliver oxygen to tissue at the cellular level. The cardiovascular system carries blood that is low in oxygen away from the heart to the lungs via arteries, where oxygen levels are restored through the air once oxygenated, this blood is then carried throughout the body via arteries, keeping our organs and tissue alive. The cardiovascular system is the workhorse of the body, continuously moving
