After I got my diploma I tried to create a perfect plan for my future. In order to achieve my personal goals I concentrated on two main things: improving my education and getting a job. I decided to continue my education and obtain a bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering which I registered in Technical College at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. When I received the admission letter from that college I prepared my bags and left my parents' house to go to Riyadh to pursue my goal. This was the first time being away from them. I studied hard in order to earn that certificate I felt that the time was running too slow while I was there. While studying at that college, I found out about a program of scholarships. This program had many conditions and a long process for the application. I didn’t hesitate to enroll in that program. It was an excellent opportunity to get a better education and was offer in one of the most sophisticated countries around the world. Therefore, I made a decision to take advantage of this opportunity, because opportunities like this only come once in our lifetime. I didn’t know they will accept me in the program to study in the U.S. and after two weeks I got good news from them. I struggled between leaving my career unfinished at that college and completing this in the U.S.
A crucial moment in my life came when I saw my name among the participants for the admissions to the scholarships on the final stage. At that moment, I’ve made my mind about this opportunity. In conclusion, it was a really hard moment at that time of my life to make a decision but I thought about this good opportunity and missing it. Most people I knew were surprised by this choice. Mostly, everyone who comes to study, stays back. I could not bring myself to stay back because I realized that I simply did not belong in America. After graduation of my high school, I’ve decided not to attend college. I spent over three months preparing for college admissions. Over three months of studying for the SAT and writing essays for colleges. But, all this hard work was blown away in just a week. The week before the May 1st, the decision day, I had made my decision not to attend college. I have decided to return to my country and start working. Of course, there was a strong disagreement from my parents, but I didn’t hesitate. For the past years, I have worked in many different kinds of places and I have faced the true reality. Imagine only paying for transportation, meals, supplies, room, board for college, and small college fees. This is exactly what other countries like Germany and Sweden are doing. Instead of having students pay an enormous amount for their education, these countries only require an individual to pay for their own basic needs with a small tuition fee as well. It is no surprise that students from the U.S are traveling overseas to get these benefits. In the meantime, colleges in the U.S have only become more expensive each year, and it’s greatly affecting graduating high school students since each student has to find a way to pay for his or her college tuition. We got off from plane and headed towards the exit. My cousins and my family case worker were already their waiting for us. It was time for us to leave and board the plane to America. I was very excited to get to America, I was also anxious to see my Dad who I haven’t seen in months. The flight was long, I can remember in the air was my first time feeling turbulence, whoa let me tell you it was a scary one it felt like the plane was about to crash. I was anxious for the plane to land. When we arrived we exited out the plane and head out to the train inside the airport in order to go to U.S. customs and border protection, to get our documents sorted out, so that we could enter the country.
I was very disappointed at myself after received dismissal letter from State University. I felt that I let down not only myself, but also my family who hoped for me to earn a bachelor degree from such a great school as Ohio State. There were several reasons that led me to difficulty and lose concentrate in studied. During the time I studied at Ohio State, my older sister who I lived with received the bad news about losing her teaching assistance job at Ohio State. She was the only one who helped support me at that time. My sister was the one who pays rent and most of utility bills. I did help her pay some of the bills and groceries as I only worked minimum part-time. Since my sister was not able to continue her teaching position at that time, I help pay most of the bills included the rent. I certainly did not prepare for the situation and ended up have to start working more so I can help out my sister pays the bills. At the same time, my mother who lives in Thailand also suffered from the breast cancer which cost my parents a lot of money for the surgery and medical bills. My parents were in no place to help me or my sister with living costs and expenses here in the United States. Since my sister had only a student visa, and was not a U.S. citizen, I was the only one that could legally work and pay most of the rent and other bills. Working long hours did affect me psychically and emotionally. I lose both of my free time and study times. As I did not plan for the situation included poor time management, I ended up work more and spend less time studied than I should. I know that I struggled to keep up with classes and missed many classes. I did not think it through and thought that I could manage the situation on my own. I did not let anyone know about my situation or seek any help from any instructor or advisor. I ended up with poor academic performance and received bad grades which lead me to academic dismissal. I feel regretted and only wish that I could have made a better decision.
However, when I was in Grade 10, many of my close friends started to apply for schools in other countries and they were all happy. This made me rethink my choice. When I rethink this experience, I realize that I have to be brave and open to new challenges, because along with challenges and risks, there are always opportunities. One thing you must know is when I receiving a acceptance into the college my life was just begun to be stressful. The first problem that comes to mind is financial aid. Financial aid provides you with the ability to continue your education at a college within your choice but, what I didn’t understand was how the aid was being process to help me. As an example, the college I attend was like taking trips back and forth, It was quite of a distance. Some of the papers that they asked for was either incomplete or certain information was missing. Knowing the United States of American money requires for the best education. After twenty days, I was accepted. Now with all the problems behind me I have completed the first step in college.
