In the hair salon industry there are salon services and retail products that make up the output. Because the services generate most of the salon’s business that is what I will consider as the final output. Possible services include haircuts, hair colors, perms, etc.
There are many things that could affect the supply and demand for these services. People's income is a huge factor. When the economy is down and people are making less money or don't have jobs, the "extras" like highlights and hairstyles are going to be less in demand. The tastes and preferences of customers is another thing that impacts the demand for services (Supply and Demand). Perms are no longer in as much demand as they were in the eighties because people's taste changes with the changing style as the years go by. The quality of the service is a factor as well (Supply and Demand). If the customer feels that something is a great value than there will be more of a demand. Also, the availability of the service plays a big role (Supply and Demand). If the service is offered when the customer needs it then there will be more of a demand. The things that are apt to affect supply of salon services are things like production costs (which includes wages and material costs) and the number of other businesses that provide the same services (Supply and Demand). Supply of products needed to perform the services can go down as a result of a rise in production costs for the producer of the product.
I would say that demand for hair salon services is elastic because there is no shortage of hair salons. there is a lot of competition out there. Customers have the luxury of being picky about selecting the salon they choose to go to.

Prices of products do not always stay the same and more popular products have higher prices than less popular products. These fluctuations, high prices and low prices are from the idea of supply and demand. Supply and demand defines the effect that the availability of a particular product and the desire or demand for that product has on price. Generally, if there is a low supply and a high demand, the price will be high (Investopedia). To understand the idea of supply and demand, the understanding of supply and the understanding of demand must be defined. The Law of Supply states that at higher prices, producers are willing to offer more products for sale than at lower prices, also that the supply increases as prices increase and decreases as prices decrease (Curriculum Link). Every since I was a child I have had a passion for doing other people’s hair. When I was little I would use my baby dolls as clients and work on their hair until it was perfect and neat. I have chosen to be in the cosmetology field because I like to help other people with their needs and wants as well as mine. I am aware that while working in this industry I will work with many different ethnic groups and many different hair types. I feel I can do anything as long as I have the determination to do so. Many people go to cosmetology school to work for someone else, but I would like to open up a mini-salon out of my own home someday.
