The salmon fishing industry has exploited the fish for centuries. Records of the White and Barents Seas, Northern Russia, salmon catch from the 17th Century through the 20th Century show increased exploitation and the inevitable decline of biomass (Lajus et al., 2007). In Podporozh’e weir 387 salmon were caught annually at the end of the 17th Century while 1947 fish were caught annually in the beginning of the 20th Century. Similar catch was recorded in Podporozh’e district with 560 fish annually in the 17th Century and 1544 fish annually in the beginning of the 20th Century. Catch from the Onega River illustrates even more exploitation with 848 fish annually in the 17th Century compared to 2586 fish and 3141 fish annually in the 17th Century, 1820s, and beginning of the 20th Century respectively. The catches gradually decreased in numbers after the beginning of the 20th Century due to overfishing and the introduction of the timber industry to the area. The size of the fish had dropped over this span of time from an average weight of 8.09kg in the early 17th Century to 6.72kg in the beginning of the 20th Century. In 2002 the weight had gotten even smaller with an average of 4.2kg. The Varzuga district had catch values that were even more alarming with 25,151 fish caught in the 18th Century increasing to 58,484 fish the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. The PBS documentary begins by explaining the normal life cycle of salmon, focusing primarily on the sockeye salmon population. This Pacific salmon once was found abundantly in the Columbia and Snake River, but as rivers were straightened and dams were built to meet the needs of population growth the fish population has diminished by the thousands.
The stories of each fish flow together as each story shows how humans have pushed to gain more control over the ocean and the delicious animals that swim in it’s depths. Greenberg starts in the free-flowing rivers where salmon are commonly found. It is there that early humans of the Northern Hemisphere most likely began their infatuation with fish. The salmon are all sterile females which are grown in contained land-based systems, therefore they will not be able to breed among themselves or with other fish. So it is unlikely that the fish will have an impact on wild populations.
As early as 1914, the Government was receiving reports from the U.S. Commissioner of Fisheries on the potential impact to unregulated fishing. By 1931, serious questions were being asked about the ability of the fish to be able to continue to meet the demands and ever-increasing fishing that was occurring in the area. With a coastline of over 202 000 km and over a fourth of the world’s freshwater resources, it is no wonder why Canada’s fishing industry is a huge part of its economy.1 Canada exports more than 75% of its fish to over 130 countries worldwide. Many of the 7 million people who reside on the coast depend on the ocean’s resources. In total, Canada’s entire fishing industry is worth around 5$ billion dollars a year, being one of the world’s most valuable. However, the coasts have not been treated by respect; overfishing, over consumption, and wasteful practices has deteriorated, not only the industry, but the ecosystems and fish populations. This is a huge global issue; the worldwide collapse of fisheries has been project for 2048. Slowly, as the trends continue, we will inevitably see many fish species start to disappear. In fact, the ill-treatment of species on the Canadian border has already devastated a large specie, the cod.

Earth's oceans make up over 75% of the Earth as a whole. With that being said, it is vital to understand the significance on the contents of the oceans. Since fish and marine products make up a large portion of our diet, fishing practices need to be properly managed. In this essay, overfishing will be defined, its consequences will be revealed, and plans for proper fish distribution will be executed.
The topical focus of this paper is the Atlantic salmon fishery. In particular, this paper looks at habitat loss and salmon farming both of which have had major impacts on the sustainability of the fishery. Several efforts have been made to restore Atlantic salmon to their native habitat, specifically in Maine and New Hampshire. This paper reviews the policies that have been implemented, not yet implemented, and a proposed policy.
Salmon are in huge demand all over the world. In 2014, over 146,000 were caught statewide. Even though it may seem as though catching all of these salmon will cause them to go endangered, they still thrive. There are many ways that humans also contribute to keeping the salmon population high. We raise them ourselves and also help out the ones in the wild. One of the ways we do this is by creating fish ladders. Fish ladders are like stairs underwater that fish like salmon can use to get over an obstacle that is in the way. Salmon can travel up to 1,000 miles and can not be stopped by different things such as water falls for dams. These ladders have helped them out tremendously.
If you recently ordered salmon off the menu of your favorite restaurant, or purchased it from your local grocery store, chances are it was farmed. According to “Salmon of the Americas, an organization of salmon-producing companies in Canada, Chile and the United States, 70 percent of the salmon produced in British Columbia and Washington comes from salmon farms. If it weren’t for these farms, we would not have the luxury and abundance of this delicious and healthy food available to us year round. Salmon farming represents one very important way to feed the world and people want to eat more salmon and seafood- more than can be caught.
First off, let me explain what the Alaskan fish business even is. The Alaskan fishing business is extremely profitable and very dangerous. This fishing business is so profitable because 95 percent of the salmon from the U.S. is caught and sold by Alaskan fisheries. With that staggering number the Alaskan fisheries have a monopoly like effect on the continental U.S. when it comes to salmon. Despite the immense possible profits the act of actually catching the fish is one of the most dangerous occupations. About 300 out of every 100,000 Alaskan fisherman die on the job each year, that is over 35 times the national average for deaths on the job. To fish or not to fish is a personal choice. The fact that the oceans are being overfished is a growing concern for individuals, organizations, and governments throughout the world. In this paper I want to discuss the effects of overfishing on the restaurant industry, and possible solutions to solve the problem. Fishing is an ongoing source of food for people around the world. In many countries it is a food staple in their everyday diet. In more modern societies eating fish has become a sensual experience, and not just for the wealthy. It hasn't been until population explosions in the last century that the demand for seafood has led to more effective fishing techniques and technologies. Now the demand for popular fish like the salmon, tuna, sea bass, cod and hoki, which is the key fish in McDonalds filet o' fish, is diving wild populations to dangerously low levels. The methods used to catch the amount of fish demanded by the industry do not leave sustainable populations in the wild. In an attempt to preserve the fish population, governments have set limits on the minimum size that may be harvested and how many of each may be taken. Boundaries have been set up saying which areas can be fished and which ones should be left alone. A number of smaller fisheries have gone out of business because of the limits imposed by the government. This leads to even less fish being harvested and brought to market. Therefore the amount and varieties of fish at markets are smaller and can cause shortages for wholesalers and restaurants. Some restaurants will no longer have the variety on their menus that they used to enjoy. Since salmon do not feed once they leave the ocean, some will die on the way because they lack enough stored body fat to make the trip. Many will be caught in fishermen's nets. Those that evade the nets may have to swim through polluted waters near cities. Many must make their way over power dams, leaping up from one tiny pool to the next along cement stairstep cascades called fish ladders. In the tributary streams, waterfalls and rapids are steep and swift enough to eliminate all but the strongest. Otters, eagles, and bears stalk the salmon in shallow riffles. Once on the spawning grounds, the fish battle each other: females against females for places to nest, males against males for available females.
