Throughout the years knowledge about asthma has grown, as well as treating it effectively. Over 300 million people are said to be victims of this disease with another 100 million being estimated by 2025 globally (Currie and Baker, 2012). In the United Kingdom, asthma is increasingly becoming one of the leading disease affecting individual of different age, ethnicity, race and gender. British Lung Foundation (2011) stated that it is more common at childhood stage and can also occur at a later age. According to Asthma UK (2014) asthma in men is less prevalence than it is in women and children troubled more with asthma than adults. Recent data in the UK shows that in children and occupational asthma in adult is on the rise with an estimate of 1 in 11 children and 1 in 12 adults are being treated for asthma (Asthma, 2014).
Asthma has been one of the main focuses of public health and clinical interventions and has been dominant in many houses over the years. According to Crockett (2003) Asthma is disease that affect the respiratory involving inflammation and narrowing of the airways. The respiratory system works to keep everyone alive, any interference with its working could cause complications as well as fatality. For this reason, this is the chosen topic for this assignment. The aim of this paper is to identify literature researched definition of asthma, pathophysiology, causes, and triggers. Secondly, the impact on the individuals, family and society will be discussed. Thirdly, the role of the professional nurse will be discussed throughout this paper. Also the general care management of the disease will be discussed; with more emphasis on the management of school age children.

Most individuals enjoy exercise, especially children who like running and jumping with friend. For some asthmatics it can sometimes prevent them from taking part in physical activities. Crockett,(2003) suggest that both young and old should be encouraged to participate in some form of physical activities because exercise plays a vital part of their wellness. The physiotherapy and pharmacotherapy could help individual develop exercise tolerance especially those who hyperventilate. Furthermore , nurse should advice patient/clients on environmental changes should non smoking indoor, and allergen triggers should be identified so the risk of asthma attack ,frequent emergency visit extra cost to the health servise might be prevented
