The origin of the city's name is thought to be named after the, the legendary Romulus. It was said that Romulus and his twin brother Remus, the two sons of the god Mars, whom were raised by a she-wolf after being abandoned, decided to build a city. After an argument, Romulus killed Remus and named the city Rome, after himself. After founding and naming of the city, he allowed men of all classes to come to Rome as citizens, including slaves and freemen without distinction. Since there was a very high population of men in the city Romulus wanted to provide his citizens with wives, Romulus invited the neighboring tribes to a festival in Rome where before the festival was over, he conducted the Rape of the Sabines. All the men found a woman and raped her to make them carry their child. These children would be the first children of the city. This magnificent and beautiful city would become the very powerful empire that controlled all of the Mediterranean and most of the known world, at that time. Before it was a powerful empire it was a strong republic that controlled only a small portion of Italy, but before it was a strong republic it was a meek city that was controlled by people that weren’t even called “Roman.” They were the Etruscans the Historical founders of Rome unlike the mythical Romulus, man who founded Rome. They were a group of people that founded the senate in Rome, the patricians and the plebeians, they formed clientage and the Roman kings, although still dominated by Etruscan blood, had the power called Imperium. We see the expulsion of the Etruscan king and the foundation of the Republic of Rome. At the height of its power Rome conquered everything around the Mediterranean. They conquered huge chunks of Europe which in... ... middle of paper ... ...izens were originally men who owned land, the wars took these men away as soldiers. They were away so long that they left their families to try to tend for the land. Most of the time the family failed and it left the family poor and impoverished and this left a lot of damage to the Roman countryside. When peace returned many of the former owners could not make any money there. The third change came in the position of the citizen also esteemed from war. The army became more and more a full-time professional force rather than one of armed citizens and those men were just brigaded for emergencies. One landmark was was the ending of a property qualification for service. The pool of military manpower of the Roman man power was showing signs of drying up. If property-less could serve, sufficient volunteers would come forward among from the poor who were willing to serve.
