Romanticism, Slavery, and The Supernatural Throughout the 18th century the Romantic era dominated Western cultural thought. Romanticism was an enormous artistic movement that influenced some of the many, well-known artists we study today. Percy Shelley was one of those artists. Shelley was infamous for his anarchism, atheism, and provocative egotistic views. But for some, Shelley appeared to be a Romantic philosophical poet with beautiful works of art. Stanzas Written in Dejection-December 1818, near Naples was a poem written by Shelley that expressed Romantic work because of its literary structure and style relevant to nature. Shelley uses the elements of human feeling as well as natural imagery in this Romantic poem. The natural imagery in the first half of the poem gives the audience the impression of a beautiful and peaceful surrounding. Both Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Harriet Jacobs’ Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl depict enslaved women hidden in attics or garrets in pursuit of freedom. These gothic allusions of people haunting or watching over either the town or the plantation are meant to suggest, among other things, a secret minority witness to the life of the slave society. Both stories portray their quests for autonomy in similar and also very different ways. Using their stories of haunting, literal and figurative, Stowe and Jacobs are able to interrogate the ideals of domesticity, virtue, and the slave society as a whole.

Mary Shelley, with her brilliant tale of mankind's obsession with two opposing forces: creation and science, continues to draw readers with Frankenstein's many meanings and effect on society. Frankenstein has had a major influence across literature and pop culture and was one of the major contributors to a completely new genre of horror. Frankenstein is most famous for being arguably considered the first fully-realized science fiction novel. In Frankenstein, some of the main concepts behind the literary movement of Romanticism can be found. Mary Shelley was a colleague of many Romantic poets such as her husband Percy Shelley, and their friends William Wordsworth and Samuel Coleridge, even though the themes within Frankenstein are darker than their brighter subjects and poems. Still, she was very influenced by Romantics and the Romantic Period, and readers can find many examples of Romanticism in this book. Some people actually argue that Frankenstein “initiates a rethinking of romantic rhetoric”1, or is a more cultured novel than the writings of other Romantics. Shelley questions and interacts with the classic Romantic tropes, causing this rethink of a novel that goes deeper into societal history than it appears. For example, the introduction of Gothic ideas to Frankenstein challenges the typical stereotyped assumptions of Romanticism, giving new meaning and context to the novel. Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, is a writer who was greatly influenced by the Romantic era in which she lived. In fact, she moved among the greatest talents of the English Romantic writers including her poet/husband Percy Shelley and their poet/friend Lord Byron. Her writing was also influenced by the other great Romantic poets Wordsworth and Coleridge, whose ideas she either directly quotes or paraphrases in Frankenstein. Since Mary Shelley was so intimate with these great talents of the Romantic movement, it is quite natural that her most famous work Frankenstein reflects many of the Romantic trends and devices.
Two Romanticism poets that stand out are George Gordon, known as Lord Byron, and William Blake. According to The Norton Anthology Western Literature, Lord Byron cultivated the persona of the solitary sufferer as well as the dashing adventurer. These two concepts are seen in majority of his works. He did not limit himself to only poetry. Lord Byron wrote many lyrics, oriental tales, satires, and melancholy poems. Seeing the evolving world, Shelley wrote for nothing more than to deliver urgent messages concerning humanity, humanity’s future, and who the powers at be should be. Shelley didn’t see the glory he deserved during his lifetime because his radical views of anti-tyranny were expressed in his poetry, driving them to underground distribution, but after his death he inspired countless other literary artists including including Oscar Wilde, W.B. The French revolution influenced tremendously the writings of the romantics during that period. Different poets depicted different issues concerning the revolution such as Napoleon's cruelty, poets escape to nature in getting away of the real world and its problems, victims of war and various other realistic situations which were effects from war. William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge are two of the major figures of the romantic period and their writings had a great impact on people and the anti-revolutionary spirit.
Shelley’s stanzas are composed of four interlinking triplets, following the principle of terza rima, and one couplet. The stanzas have ABA BCB CDC DED EE rhyme-scheme. Both poems have alliteration to emphasize the quality of the season: “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness” shows the kind nature of Keats’s autumn, while “O wild West Wind, thou breath of Autumns being” shows the powerful character of Shelley’s autumn.
Percy Bysshe Shelley is a very influential Romantic poet, who is part of what is the second generation of Romantic poets, the “young hellions”. He is catagorized with Lord Byron and John Keats, who are also important poets during their times. Shelley, like his other two comrades, died at a young age, as they lived fast and hard. He had died in a boating accident, when he was 29 years old. Shelley had a few notable poems, such as Ozymandias, Ode to the West Wind, and To a Skylark. As a Romantic poet, Shelley often used connected nature to spirit, and did that using examples of personification in his poems Ode to the West Wind and To a Skylark.
To the Romantics, the imagination was important. It was the core and foundation of everything they thought about, believed in, and even they way they perceived God itself. The leaders of the Romantic Movement were undoubtedly Samuel Taylor Coleridge and his close friend, William Wordsworth. Both were poets, and both wrote about the imagination. Wordsworth usually wrote about those close to nature, and therefore, in the minds of the Romantics, deeper into the imagination than the ordinary man. Coleridge, however, was to write about the supernatural, how nature extended past the depth of the rational mind.
Shelley incorporates the romantic’s emphasis on the glory and beauty of nature in her novel. For example when Victor returns home, “[he] discovered more distinctly the black sides of Jura, and the bright summit of Mont Blanc” he then explains “Dear mountains! My own beautiful lake! Your summits are clear; the sky and lake are blue and placid” (Shelley 61). Romantics also focused on the power of nature. As described in Shelley’s novel, “wind arose; the sea roared; and, as with the mighty shock of an earthquake; it split and cracked with a tremendous and overwhelming sound” (Shelley 198)
The Romantic Movement influenced many aspects in the 19th century and early 20th century. It’s hard to say that it wasn’t in fact the most significant movement. Its influence was widespread and it was spread across all of the arts from painting to literature to music. With its emphasis on imagination and emotion it allowed people to become more creative instead of following the guidelines. Some of the most famous, most important, most memorable works of literature in America was even written during this time period. Romanticism was truly a significant movement in the 19th and 20th century.
