Today, romance is one of the most popular genres to watch on television. Unlike most, romance is a genre where the plot revolves around the love between two main characters as they experience the highs and lows of love. “Common themes that revolve around romantic movies are kissing, love at first sight, tragic love, destructive love, and sentimental love” (Taylor). These themes appear in many historical films and the pattern still continues in modern films as well. Watching romantic movies has a giant negative influence on the viewer's analysis of what love and relationships should really be like. These films give the wrong impression of reality when it comes to dating, marriage, having children, and even how to manage a relationship in the first place. Even though romantic movies are commonly watched, there are many effects on personal real-life relationships after watching these types of films.
To begin with, romantic movies mold expectations of what love is really like. They portray that love is the only thing that matters. In the past, love was secondary. Relationships were arranged by parents because they wanted their children to join lands or kingdoms, and whether or not the couple actually loved each other was irrelevant. Today, parents have almost no say in who their children fall in love with. Romance movies over-emphasize love when it comes to “falling in love at first sight” and the idea that “true love conquers all”. I’m sure that almost everyone knows that real-life love doesn’t work like this, but that doesn’t mean that those illustrations of love that movies characterize doesn’t affect viewers’ hope for romance and true love in their own life. Although the issues between two genders become serious and difficult to solve with, there still exists love between the two genders. Love is a constant topic among the people. Besides, Love is fantastic, unpredictable, and a main emotional connection in two human beings. There are several couple relationships in two movies. Some of them is searching for freedom of life. Some of them need to concern the ethics of society. No matter how the love has being created, the love is natural moments for human being to express their desires and thoughts.
When it comes to Asian films, the audience can seldom avoid mentioning pure love films, one of the most outstanding film genres in East Asia, featured by delicate sentiment, touching plot and unique aestheticism. In these tear gases the viewers can easily find that pain-recovery complex does exist: unrealistic romance beyond time and space can heal the audience’s pain to some extent. The paper argues pure love in East Asian romance films in crisscross of time and space plays a significant role in relieving historical, national or individual pain through parallel narrative styles, taking Japanese pure love film Love Letter (1995), South Korean romantic film The Classic (2003) and Hong Kong nostalgia film The City of Glass (1998) for example. Almost every movie today is about the hero getting the girl. The concept has been overused and has now become a stereotypical ending for most films. It is creating a society that thinks true love will come and sweep everyone off of their feet “just like in the movies”. Looking into the past, examples of these types of movies are still present. The movie, The Princess Bride, conforms to the concept that the villain turns into a hero, and always gets the damsel in distress. “It’s a love story, a slap-stick comedy, and even a little action.” (Mac) As You Wish: Westley and Buttercup in The Princess Bride) It illustrates a basic love story with a similar ending, making it an unoriginal film.
When thinking about romantic relationships, whether in the movies, media or your own relationship what characteristics come to mind? The topic we will discuss in this presentation attends to the romantic relationships within interpersonal communication.
Using the theories I have discussed regarding feminist film theories , I will apply it to two of the most commercially popular Hollywood Romantic comedies, Pretty Woman and Bridesmaids. Since they both fall under this genre, I will be able to apply these theories and compare them accordingly.

It is truly amazing to watch a movie or observe in real life an idea you learned in class be portrayed. It shows myself that these are real issues that we are facing in our growing society today. Additionally, I believe watching “He’s Just Not Into” You is a great portrayal of how many constants there can be put on individuals when it relates to relationships and love, and if you are not following the majority you are wrong. Nevertheless, our society is starting to change, generations are evolving and changing their goals in many areas especially in love. One prime example is millennials and their idea of slowing down relationships and moving in first or staying signal because they have careers to focus on. These are all idea that could not be common nor expected generations ago and do to this, many ideas that caused complications in the movie do not cause individuals difficulties

Love is not simple or easy. The kind of love that will last over time and overcome each obstacle it brings is actually a fair amount of work. In the film Valentine’s Day there are all different kinds of love and some of them thrive while others fail by the end of the day. All these different relationships present an opportunity to analyze how different aspects of communication help people find love and make it last.
‘Lad flicks’ or ‘lad movies’ is a type of film genre that emerged in the late 1990s. They are defined as a “‘hybrid of “buddy movies”, romantic comedies and “chick flicks”, which centre on the trials and tribulations of a young man as he grows up to become a ‘real man’. ‘Lad flicks’ respond in part to the much-debated ‘crisis in masculinity’” (Benjamin A. Brabon 116). This genre of film explored what it meant to be a ‘real man’ in the twentieth century and in order to do so, they would have to grow up and leave their juvenile ways behind to enter the heterosexual world. Gender relations in ‘lad flicks’ portray masculinity as a troubled, anxious cultural category hiding behind a humorous façade and also rely greatly on a knowing gaze and irony. The two ‘lad flicks’ that will be analyzed are The 40-Year-Old Virgin (Judd Apatow 2005) and Role Models (David Wain 2008).

It’s hard to name a movie or book that doesn’t ending the main character finding romance. Like the hunger games. Were Katniss Everdeen survives the games, overthrows the capital. But despite everything going on in the book, like war, starvation, and many deaths, the author still manages to make a large portion of the story about her love triangle. Maybe this is the reason a lot of people feel incomplete without another person in their life. Laura Mulvey, a feminist of the Second Wave, observed the evolution of female representations in films. She concludes that films still display dominant ideologies that prevent social equality between men and women. Mulvey came up with three common themes that mainstream films continuously promote within their films. These three common themes reinforce that women are always going to be seen as nothing more but objects. They do not serve any symbolic purposes except to help advance the story by motivating the objectives of the male characters. As evident, Happy Endings is one particular film that embodies all of these traits and as a result, the female characters are perceived as sexual objects in both the perspectives of the male character(s) and the spectators.
Movies take us inside the skin of people quite different from ourselves and to places different from our routine surroundings. As humans, we always seek enlargement of our being and wanted to be more than ourselves. Each one of us, by nature, sees the world with a perspective and selectivity different from others. But, we want to see the world through other’s eyes; imagine with other’s imaginations; feel with other’s hearts, at a same time as with our own. Movies offer us a window onto the wider world, broadening our perspective and opening our eyes to new wonders.
