Boys are always interested in sport at a young age, sports like football, hockey, and soccer. I found these sports to be boring and not fun for me to play. One day when I was in the midst of browsing the internet I came across a video of a boy not too much older than I was at the time, by the name of Ryan Sheckler. This boy had an online video showing off his abilities on a skateboard. To a certain extent I was intrigued and impressed. My attention was set towards my goal of learning how to skateboard. I then left my house to get myself a skateboard at the store. When I arrived at the store there were plenty of options to choose from, like different sizes (length and width), wheels, bearings, trucks, and even grip tape. In the end, I decided on getting a blind deck with independent trucks, spitfire wheels and bearings and Jessup grip tape. After getting the deck put together, I left the store and started my adventure forward into the underground world of skateboarding.
When I got home I started to roll around on the street getting my footing and balance together before I tried any...
Extreme Skateboarding is unlike any sport in the world and the athletic talent, skill and agility to compete at that level is 1:100,000. In the future these events and these riders will be using some new high-tech toys, namely; The Hover Board. It is the wave of the Future.
The first skateboards were made in the 1950’s being used as an exciting activity to take part in when the waves were down. From then and now the sport has changed tremendously, thanks to a group of young skaters from a slum area of Venice Beach or Dog-town, as the locals called it, known as the z-boys in the 1970’s. Even though skateboarding was already known and invented, the z-boys are the ones who made skating famous and took it to new heights in popularity. But how did they do this? The Z-boys made this sport what it is today, and played a very important part in the history and evolution of skateboard style and quality.
It all started freshman year of high school. I really wanted to get involved in some kind of sport or club. I couldn’t decide what to do. Many people said I should join the lacrosse team and my response was “I have never played before, how am I suppose to make the team”. I always had an interest in lacrosse however I was scared to go out and buy all the expensive equipment and not make the team.. I went home that night and asked my parents what I should do. My dad encouraged me to go out and try. He said it doesn’t hurt to try. That next morning of school, I raced to the athletic office and signed up for lacrosse, and when that bell rang after school I went to the lacrosse store nearest to me and bought all of the gear so that I could make the first tryout. The fist tryout was the day after I bought all of the gear.
In the beginning, skateboarding consisted of a 2x4 and some old roller-skate wheels. Around the 1950's with the boom in the surfing popularity, skateboarding became more popular. During this time it was known as sidewalk surfing. In the 1960's is when skateboarding really took off. This is when the first skateboards were produced and sold. During this time period skateboarding consisted of cruising around the streets on your board. In 1978 a 15 year old boy by the name of Alan "Ollie" Gelfand invented a trick he called the no-hands air. His friends named after him the ollie. This was a ramp based trick. In the coming years a rider by the name of Rodney Mullen took the trick and applied it to flatland skateboarding. After this point skateboarding began to evolve in to the sport it is today. Virtually every trick in the modern day skateboarding involves the ollie.
In “The Birdman Drops In” we meet the growing subculture of skateboard fanatics. The one of the fastest growing segments of the population due to the worship of youth, vitality, and extreme sports. Many people maintain a connection with sport that comes from a history of skating in the early days. What was once just a group of kids skating in dried up pools has now grown into one of the most popular events at the X Games. Skateboarding has influenced new sports such as snowboarding and even changed the way modern surfers surf the waves.
The last thing I wanted to learn about was jumping. This skill would be hardest but it would be crucial if I wanted to be an adventurous rider. It was very hard at first, by which I mean I would get air but crash. When I got the hang of it it was awesome it felt so great to be flying, or at least that’s what it felt like. By the end of my tenth year on this planet I was totally ready for a bigger four wheeler. Actually a four wheeler that would be twice as big as my current one at the time. So, I got a Suzuki ltz four hundred, this four wheeler was incredible I loved it a bunch. The first time I rode it I was being typical adventurous me and rolled it. That hurt pretty bad and I didn’t really want to ride anymore that day but I realized that stuff happens and if I’m still alive I’m going to keep on trucking. So, I learned all of the previous skills that I had on my old bike except this time I was much faster and way better. I was able to drag race and beat fifty percent or more of people but most of the time I’d win more. But then came winter time, I hated riding in the cold so I didn’t ride for a long time because it was a long winter. So, I also lost a lot of my
The hierarchical system of skateboarders is indeed complex and takes on a variety of forms and stages. Based on what I have learned and witnessed, popularity is the culture of skateboarding parallels that of the rest of modern society. Great skateboarders are well- rounded individuals who are socially apt in all situations. They are exposed to more than just skateboarding, but are involved in the social life activities in which non- skaters partake.
Skateboarding has rich history of innovation and is full of intriguing stories. Many of these stories are documented in this book in great detail. However, this essay will provide you with an overview of the last nine decades.
I knew that I needed my own bowling ball and equipment just so I could get better at this sport. My mom supported me and my sister all the way while making this choice to improve ourselves. She finally took me and my sister to get our first bowling balls, there was no greater feeling in the world then what I was feeling. It was like I had just won the lottery and nothing could ever stop me from conquering this spot I was getting the equipment I needed

Shawn starting skateboarding as a pre-teen and would continue to skate every single day until recent years. He enjoyed going to the skating parks where the culture was all about individuality and incorporating your own spin of creativity into different tricks. Shawn was driven to change the perception of what it meant to be a skateboarder and break down some of the rebellious stigmas. While chasing his dream to become a professional skateboarder in this melting pot of a sport, he learned how important it is not to judge others and how valuable getting to know them is.
That is exactly what I do everyday when I go skating. This makes skating so much more fun. Learning new tricks may be hard, but in the end, it’s very much worth it. When I first started skateboarding, I learned an ollie, which is the very first trick you learn because it is the most basic and is used to learn every other trick. From there, I would just watch skateboard videos and try to learn from the pros. Until I could do a trick, trying to figure out how they did it was the hard part, but when I finally found out how it was done I would become excited and try to land it for hours. Whenever I would land the trick, I’d become very proud of myself and practice the trick more. When you land a trick you have never done before, it forces you to want to learn more. After you learn a trick you can show it to friends and show off if you wanted to. It’s too good of a time to learn new tricks. New tricks or variations can be made up or you can just learn tricks that have already been made. Skateboarding has an endless possibility of tricks to be made. There are just so many variations of one trick, or sometimes you can mix two or more tricks together and you just go crazy with it. When you learn new tricks, you can bring those tricks to new obstacles which will make skateboarding even more
As I entered the building which housed the rink, the warm, nostalgic scent of popcorn hit that part of my brain where dusty, cobwebbed memories live, memories of my own adolescence. I made my way past a group of exuberant teenagers at the snack bar until I reached the skating rink. Skinny, hard benches, made for small butts, lined one wall. I took a seat and scanned the rink. My eyes paused to read a sign; white, block letters on a black background warned, "Skate at Your Own Risk."
Before talking about the advertisement, I want to share my experience. I first learn how to skate when I was five years old. I could not remember how many times I fell down hard on the adamant ice. However, I can still remember the temperature of my mom’s hand when she helped me up. Many people may say you will never learn how to swim without choking. I would better say you would never learn how to skate without fall down. In the advertisement, there are also children learn to skate, ski. The dif...
