The Rococo fashion period occurred during the eighteenth century in Europe and in other European influenced countries. (History Of Fashion-Rococo). France, as the major arbiter of the Rococo fashions, designed using exquisite fabrics, silks, velvets, embroidery, lace, plumes, ribbon, ruffles, and fur which would characterize the century.(Fashion in the Western World). The movement is known for incorporating the French “rocaille” and the Italian “barocco” together to create Rococo, which is known for being daintier than the preceding Baroque movement in the Seventeenth Century (Fashion History.zee). By studying Rococo fashion, history can be learned and one can easily see that the fashions of the Eighteenth Century still influence modern fashion.

Using the most intricate styles like embroidery from King Louis’s XIV rule, traditionally hand sewn clothing that are made up to 100 or more hours, with the most expensive fabrics like velvet, silk, fur, and lace is still done today, and it is featured six times a year by the biggest and most popular couturiers and designers during fashion week for women and men’s, and couture week, which is only held in the 4 biggest cities that celebrate fashion, also known as the Big 4: New York, London, Milan, and Paris. All of this is possible now because of Louis XIV’s idea to use the arts to represent his rule as an absolute monarch.

Not many Greeks were naturally blond, so light hair was probably perceived as beautiful because it was so exotic. Women would lighten their hair using plant extracts or arsenic. They also washed their locks with a mixture of ashes, olive oil, and water. The 18th century fashion for men and women was influenced by the royal court and Puritans. Women’s fashion was very elegant and colorful, more so than the men’s fashion. The shoes worn by the women of the 18th century were made of silks and satin. They were decorated in laces and had a square or round shape. They also began to wear shoes of different and vibrant colors with higher heels. A majority of the time their shoes were not shown because of their extravagant skirts and petticoats. Revolutionary fashions made it acceptable to show more skin, develop different styles, and be able for women to express themselves. Women began to liberate themselves from the traditional long hairstyles and turn to the new and shorter masculine hairdos. “The bob appeared in the US shortly. Women with bobs needed more frequent haircuts, and wanted permanent waves” (Monet). Women began to cut their hair shorter, cringing their hair, and finger waving it.
From then on it was not until the 1450's where fashion sense began. Ideas such as increasing trades and extending clothing materials allowed the fashion trend to grow and change. The ones to keep up or set the fashion trending during the Renaissance period were the wealthy or ruling class. Fashion had its own stated rules and laws for each class, those laws were named sumptuary laws and it made people had to keep up with the fashion since it changed every year, and the clothes they wore defined their social level. The rich literally wore their wealth, shown by the amount of jewels put into their clothes or the quality of the material.

Due to its popularity, it was adopted internationally and had many variations of styles. Fashion in France was an always popular, ever changing aspect of society. Fashion changed back then just as rapidly as it does now. This facet of culture blossomed during the nineteenth century. Even still today, fashion plays a huge part in lives of everyone across the world and Paris still stands to be one of the major fashion hubs of the world.
