Robotics Changes The World
Robotic technology has taken an important role in our society since many years ago. These recent days, scientists and engineers have been developing an automotive technology that allows cars to park themselves without any troubles. Noel Sharkey (2008), a professor of computer science at the University of Sheffield and an expert on robot science and techno games, in “The Ethical Frontiers of Robotics” shows the unavoidable of the use of robots in the future and ethical problems that come together (p. 357). According to Sharkey (2008), there are positive and negative aspects of the robots use for care for children and the elderly, and the use of autonomous robots in the military (p. 358). Sharkey claims that using robots in our daily life would have both positive and negative sides because robots can assist in our busy world, act as a substitute for soldiers, but can also take the personal interactions that are needed to be careful. I agree with Sharkey’s statement that the public should discuss with more details about robots for the human security.
Robots are being developed to assist people in their daily activities, especially in the care of children. Japanese and South Korea companies have produced child-minding robots that can play games, make a conversation, recognize faces, and monitor the children by providing alert systems that can be controlled by mobile phone or PC with a camera (Sharkey, 2008, p.358). Sharkey supports the advantages of the personal-care robot with the short-term exposure that child-minding robots can create interest and curiosity to the children. At the same time, however, Sharkey (2008) claims, “They do not provide care and the children still need human attention” (p. 358). Sh...

...oduce robots like the movie “RoboCop” by Paul Verhoeven. But the life doesn’t always go as planned, so there will be some possibilities that the robot can become like “The Terminator” by James Cameron. Publics should carefully discuss about necessity of the robot autonomy for human security because the militaly robots can change RoboCop into Terminator.
Robotics technology is important in our every day life because it helps to improve healthcare, transportation, agriculture, and so on. Noel Sharkey in “The Ethical Frontiers of Robotics” states that robots have both advantages and disadvantages aspects in the care of children and elderly, and in the use of militaly. I agree with Sharkey’s statement that the public should discuss about the personal-care robots and autonomous robots cautiously to save children and elderly from isolation, and innocents from combatants.
