Jane Austen’s novel, Emma, can be construed as a novel about games; the characters that love to play them and their pitfalls. The importance of games in Emma may not be as intelligible when first reading the novel, like games, their role may appear trivial. On the contrary, scenes in which the characters take part in various games and riddles are some of the more didactic scenes in the text. It is often the case that there is a game played by the characters, within the game or riddle presented in the scene. In Emma, Austen uses games, both physical and mental, as vehicles to expose the flaws and subtext of characters, as well as a means to drive the plot in this dialogue heavy tale. Furthermore, through analysis of the scenes involving Mr. Elton’s riddle, the word game at Donwell Abbey and the conundrum at Box Hill, it can be argued the games and riddles are representative of the mental games played by the characters.
In the novel, the reader is presented with a heroine who loves games. Emma finds a game in everything, from matchmaking her family and friends, to heated debates with Mr. Knightley. Aside from her amusement in playing puppet master of Highbury, she achieves much entertainment in playing games and the solving of riddles, of both the inquisitive and romantic nature. In a society strictly bound by propriety and convention, games provided an opportunity for amusing and less formal gaiety, while also allowing for more intimate interaction. With that in mind, games is Emma could be a way around the problem of knowledge, which is a problem lurking in many of Austen’s novels. Through Emma’s recompense for her carelessness in playing with others, she is able to acquire self-knowledge and learn her feelings for Mr. Knightley. Games should not be seen as negative parts of the novel; they showcase the shortcomings of the players. While the role of game shed light on the flaws of characters, they ultimately are a means of learning and growth. Knowing the role of individual games breaks down the role of games in society. Society is the greatest game of all. It is worked out masterfully and meticulously by the players through convention, wit, blushing, dancing, and of course games.
Games can cause you to lose your idea of reality and create a sense of disillusionment. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, games are immensely significant throughout the story. Mental games tear at a Gawain's perception of what's going on, deceiving him to the truth of his situation. Sir Gawain knows this all too well from his experience with the Green Knight. The Green Knight creates a challenge for someone to cut his head off and in twelve months seeks him out to return the favor. Physical games can be as impacting as mental ones; Lady Bertilak attempting to seduce Sir Gawain. This temptation that generates a rift between what his mind knows and what it wants to do leads to more confusion within him She basically throws herself upon him yet he stays strong to his morals. These games within the novel create copious amounts of irony during Sir Gawain's quest. He gets caught up within all these games only to find out later that it was all a hoax. His year long quest is an ironic journey that was produced entirely by the Green Knight. Games hold tremendous value in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the games cause Sir Gawain to lose his sense of reality. Through the Green Knight's games, Sir Gawain's word is truly tested.

She believes that she is in control of fate and must play matchmaker in order for couples to discover their true love. Austen confirms, "The real evils indeed of Emma's situation were the power of having rather too much her own way, and a disposition to think a little too well of herself" (Austen 1). Although Emma is so spoiled and overbearing, she truly doesn't realize this fact.

Throughout the novel the reader hears more about his wife than they hear about him. Their relationship represents complete switch of the traditional idea of man being superior to woman. The Knightleys however, John and Isabella, are purely conventional and are ideal couple for Nineteenth Century society’s times. Mr. Elton does not represent true gentility while Mr. Weston too gentle. Although all of these characters have their flaws, Austen finds her perfect figure in George Knightley. His infallible nature is unrealistic, yet it gives society the ultimate gentleman to aspire for. Austen’s Emma is more than a comedic novel of manners but also a quintessential piece that fits perfectly into the lives of today’s society.

As the novel progresses, Emma becomes more mature, and realizes how silly she had been in the past. In the end, she finally stops matchmaking others and marries Mr. Knightley, who was perfect for her all along. Mr. Knightley: Mr. Knightley is another main character in the novel. He is quite a bit older than Emma, at 38. He is also Emma’s brother-in-law.
