“Night Prowler” is a song released in 1979 on AC-DC’s album titled “Highway to Hell”. It would not be until June 28, 1984 that this song would begin to acquire its association with a serial killer. This murderer, rapist, and burglar was born Ricardo Leyva Ramirez. He was commonly referred to as Richard. However, in May of 1985 he was immortalized in the media as “The Night Stalker”.
The night-time rampage started in June of 1984. While sleeping in her bed, Jennie Vincow was awakened with repeated stabs in the chest. this shadow of the night slit her throat and nearly decapitated her as the finishing blow. However, the nightmare did not end until Ramirez had intercourse with the seventy-nine year old's life less body. It would be another almost nine months until Richard would strike again. March of 1985, 22 year old Angela Barrio was jumped outside of her condo. He shot her and to the best of his knowledge killed her and then went inside and killed Dayle Okazaki. Angela survived because the bullet Richard shot had bounced off of the keys she had in her hand. About an hour later in Monterey Park another woman fell victim to Richard's bullet. Thirty year old Tsai-Lian Yu was forcefully taken from her car and shot. She died before paramedics could arrive. Ten days later, he struck again. His victims were Vincent and Maxine Zazzarra. He quickly killed the male,Vincent, Richard stabbed Maxine multiple times, carved a “T” on her left breast and gouged her eyes out. Most of these were post-mortem mutilations. He did leave footprints and bullets that matched previous murders and this was the point in time when it was recognized that there was a serial killer on the loose. When the officers made it to an alley, they were met by another Latino gang member who fired at Taylor and Zavala, hitting Taylor once in the chest before being shot and killed by Zavala. Zavala went to aid Taylor, who appeared to be quickly dying, and called out for help. In a study conducted by Hickey, he discovered that out of thirty-four female serial killers, almost one in two had a male accomplice committing murders with them (Holmes et al., 1991). He also revealed that 97% were white and the average age the women started committing murders was thirty-three (Holmes et al., 1991). Women serial killers differ from men in that most women kill for material gain, such as money or insurance benefits, and they usually commit murder with pills or poison. Stephen Holmes, Ronald Holmes, and Eric Hickey developed a typology for female serial killers similar to the one developed by Holmes and Holmes, discussed earlier. They begin with visionary serial killers, who are compelled by some force, such as God, or spirits, to commit murders. The second type is the comfort killer, who usually kills acquaintances and does so for a material gain, money or real estate (Holmes et al., 1991). The third category is hedonistic female serial killers, which is similar to the earlier typology in that the offender connects murder with sexual gratification. There were a total of six victims whom fell at hands of Richard Trenton Chase, a.k.a "The Vampire of Sacramento". Strangely enough, that murder count does not appear as heinous or unusual when comparing to the killing sprees of other high profile serial killers. However, if we take a look deeper into the man that was known as "The Vampire of Sacramento" and more importantly how he carried out his murders; we will realize that he is one of the most gruesome serial killers in history. Furthermore, Richard Trenton Chase suffered from mental illnesses through his life and in turn, this led to that killing spree that left six dead. Richard Trenton Chase's unusual behavior wasn't something that just happened suddenly; this odd behavior began to develop at very young age and escalated.

As if molded directly from the depths of nightmares, both fascinating and terrifying. Serial killers hide behind bland and normal existences. They are often able to escape being caught for years, decades and sometimes an eternity. These are America’s Serial Killers (America’s Serial Killers). “Even when some of them do get caught, we may not recognize what they are because they don’t [sic] match the distorted image we have of serial killers” (Brown). What is that distorted image? That killers live among everyday life, they are the ones who creep into someone’s life unknowingly to torture and kill them. The serial killers that are in the movies, Norman Bates, Michael Myers, and the evil master mind of SAW, these characters are just that characters. They have been made up as exaggerated fictional characters from the Hollywood imagination.
Serial killers have been a major problem in the United States for a long time. We don’t know why they kill human beings, but many people are trying to figure out why. A serial killer is a person that has murdered three or more people over a period of a month. There is also a period of time between the murders know as the “cooling off period”. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, there have been approximately four hundred serial killers in the United States within the past century. The number of these murderers have increased over the past thirty years, with around eighty percent of them emerging since 1950.
