The desire to influence young children ranked the number one reason why students enter the field of education (Kauchak & Eggen, 2014, p.5). As an educator, there are numerous rewards that come with the profession, along with challenges that can influence instruction. A positive environment, personal development and being a role model are rewarding aspects of the teaching profession that make diversity and the complexities of teaching not only manageable, but a more gratifying experience.
One reward that the teaching profession generates is a positive and energetic environment. Dealing with a multitude of problems and juggling an array of tasks in a small increment of time may seem tedious, but the fast pace environment deters from a stagnant and monotonous occupation. The intangible rewards, such as the variety of personalities within the classroom along with the memorable things students’ say and do, promote a positive and lively atmosphere in many classrooms.
Developing personally while contributing to society is another reward that comes with being a professional educator. Being a teacher not only influences students, but also “…provides opportunities on a daily basis for personal and intellectual growth” (Kauchak & Eggen, 2014, p.7). With experience, an educator adapts to the environment, acquires beneficial teaching skills and implements knowledge for future generations to retain and apply. All in all, the rewards of being an educator far outweigh the challenges. And, when a challenge to instruction arises, an effective educator can still profit by adapting and learning from the experience. Being an educator is a learning experience that contributes to individual development and, most importantly, makes a lasting impact on society and the lives of young children. Being an advocate for future generations and making a lasting impression is the greatest reward that triumphs any challenge an educator faces.
Teachers have affected the way in which I learnt at school in a positive way. Not only have they taught me the relevant information needed to pass, but also the social, emotional and communication skills needed for everyday life. John Dewey (1897) explains that education begins unconsciously at birth “and is continually shaping the individuals powers, saturating his consciousness, forming his habits, training his ideas, and arousing his feelings and emotions.” Teachers have motivated me to strive for success, in school and also out of school. Learning is a process that does not stop once you have finished school; it is a process that continues throughout your career. As a teacher you will learn new things everyday as your students will not all come from the same culture or environment.
Personally, being an educator gives me a chance to have a great impact on the world. I have always enjoyed seeing the look on someone’s face when they make a new connection or learn something. I have many strong beliefs in the education process and many times feel that the needs of the student are overlooked. As a teacher, the students would be priority and that is the backbone of my teaching philosophy. I know that I am not very experienced and have much to learn. This I will strive to do throughout my education and even when I enter the teacher workforce.
Life is unpredictable and there are an infinite number of paths for one to choose from as they journey through life. One “trail” that seems to be a popular choice to travel is that of an educator. Why is this? What makes the sharing of knowledge so special? Perhaps there is an unparalleled joy in enlightening someone else. Perhaps it is a combination of unlimited elements that drives individuals to be educators. And perhaps there is no one sure answer to these questions. One thing is for sure, our world has seen its share of tremendous and inspiring teachers come and go with the passing years and generations of people. Unfortunately, this world has also seen its share of educators who were not so noticeable and effective. Again, I ask why is this? What makes some teachers more effective and inspiring than others? Could the difference be discovered through viewing their individual philosophies on education? My personal conclusion to this question is a resounding YES. It is an educator’s philosophy on teaching that makes the difference. Up to this point in life, I’ve simply been a student of this world, but as I move forward in life I aspire to cross the line that all before me have crossed to become educators. How will I achieve this? More importantly, will my personal philosophy elevate me to become an inspiring and encouraging teacher? And most importantly, what exactly is my philosophy on education? In a general sense, I simply hope to look at each child I teach as an individual and to make the best situation for each child. Successful teachers develop the whole child by making integrated efforts to promote their student’s academic, social and emotional learning. Children need to be aware of themselves and others; make responsible decisions, and be ethical and respectful of the people around them.
As I reflect on the past four years at Virginia Tech, I am fortunate to have had the opportunities to work two semesters in classrooms and learn first-hand about children, teaching, and how I fit into the profession. As I prepare to move to the next chapter of my formal education, I realize that I am no different than the students I worked with. As a teacher, I will become a life-long learner by learning new techniques and experimenting with different teaching strategies. How can one become an effective teacher without constantly reflecting on what works, what doesn’t work and collaborating with colleagues. I recognize that teaching is no small undertaking but I am confident I will remain dedicated to the profession with my genuine enthusiasm, positive perspective, compassion, and zeal for learning.
I chose education as my career path because I hope to be able to make a small difference in a child’s life. Time and time again I have seen children being educated poorly and/or not having appropriate role models in their life. I feel that an educator must not only be able to convey to the student the classroom material, but also be a counselor, coach, mentor, and a parent. Failing to fulfill these roles gives a child the chance to slip through the educational system without having the opportunity to influence them to some degree.
I believe educators are one of the most important careers out there, without them where would we be today? Would you be reading this paper? Would you still be able to read, write, or have an educated conversation? Do you know how to pay for things at the grocery store, and know if you’re receiving the correct change back? Do you know how to tell time, so you can manage your day?

It is my desire as an educator to provide my students with the learning environment necessary to motivate and inspire each and every one of them to become to their fullest potential. For myself, teaching is about giving; giving the students support and security, giving them respect and dignity, giving them opportunities to succeed and a quality education, and not only giving them my time and effort but also giving myself. Our society requires its children to not only receive a solid education, but that they are taught by a highly qualified educator who is sensitive to their individual needs and deeply committed to their success. My decision to pursue a career in teaching is due, in part to my desire to make an impact on the kids that I teach. Teaching is a very rewarding profession in which the teacher is directly able to affect a child’s life. During this stage of my college career, I have reached the realization the becoming a teacher is not too far from my grasp. There have been many influences on my life that have led me to this point and that helped me to establish goals for my career. Due to my father’s influence mainly, I decided I wanted to become a teacher. I will be a third generation teacher when all is said and done, and growing up in an educational environment provided me with the foundation to pursue a career as a teacher.
I have decided to become a teacher because I love children. I enjoy watching them grow, and I want to make a difference in the lives of my students. As a teacher, I will do everything that I can to ensure that each becomes a productive, successful citizen in life. In order for me to obtain this goal, I will create a loving, positive, respectful, and safe learning environment where each student will be treated equally and be encouraged to do his or her best. Keeping this in mind, there are four elements that I must remember which includes (1) how young children develop, (2) what they should know and be able to do, (3) instructional strategies that I have learned, and (4) my feelings regarding parent involvement.
Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. Reflecting and analyzing over and over again the best way to teach to learn and how to make students to extend what has been learned. The many hours spend in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, review pupils tasks and exams, as well, all the administrative requirements one has to cover for whatever institution we work. Besides all this a good teacher, a professional one, will have to find the time to keep preparing to improve oneself.
Being a student for the majority of my life, I had never fully understood why anyone would desire to be a teacher. But after four semesters at College, I am slowly changing my attitude. As an education major, I now attend real classrooms and observe the wonders of how a young child’s mind works. Through my observations in actual class settings, I have also come to realize how delicate a child’s mind is and that the slightest external influence can build or destroy that child. I too want to experience the joy and wonder of seeing a young ingenuous mind finally understanding a new concept. I want to see the student blossom and grow as a result of change and experience, not only in a classroom setting, but also through social interactions with his or her peers.

First, I realized that, teachers carry a lot of weight on their shoulders and have great responsibilities. They have to balance the curriculum, students, parents, lesson plans, common core, and upper management and still maintain a professional demeanor. Second, educators must follow a strong code of ethics. They must be professional at all times with students and colleagues, keep confidentiality, not have or show any prejudice or bias, maintain safe and positive learning environments, help students with problems, and hand out disciplines accordingly. Lastly, I found that when you’re a teacher, your education never stops. Teachers are always trying to improve their own education and professional growth, both for the benefit of their students and for the benefit of themselves.
