Lowe's How-To-Clinic

What nutrients do plants need to stay alive? Most plants need nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium in order to grow to maturity. Commercial fertilizers contain all the ingredients that are necessary for plants to thrive. Commercial fertilizers are a gardeners asset. Fertilizer assists in growing a stunning and colossal flower bed, unfortunately, commercial fertilizers have a grave effect on the environment, and devastates the lives of animals. Fertilizer is applied to plants to help them grow, then it eventually seeps into the ground, and pollutes ground water. Fertilizer run-off travels and ends up in ponds and rivers, consequently killing marine life. Fortunately, Eco-friendly options are available to the avid gardener. One great option is Composting (homemade fertilizer). Composting is a Eco-friendly alternative to using fertilizer, and it has a minuet cost. Compost fertilizer are used the same way as commercial fertilizer. It provides the same benefits to plants as commercial fertilizers. The word “compost bin” is frightening for gardeners because the average gardener does not have the knowledge to begin composting. The process of composting is a foreign idea to the amateur gardener. Fortunately, Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse offers a free composting how-to-clinic. The composting how-to-clinic teaches the average gardener the needed strategies to start their own compost bin. In this essay, I will describe the process involved in building a compost bin, the ingredients used in composting, and the environment surrounding the how-to-clinic.

First, a tumbler or a compost bin is needed to hold the compost and keep it enclosed. Lowe's sells assembled compost bins, but for this class we learned how to build are own. To build a compost bin: a decision must be made about the location and size of the bin. Shady areas work best for compost bins. Shade allows the compost bin to stay moist and cool (the organisms in the bin need to stay moist and cool). Then, lumber must be used to build a solid frame. Once the frame is built, wooden slats are used for floor boards. Next, plywood is cut and fitted for the sides and a top is added with hinges. Amateurs can build a compost bin in about one day. Once the bin is finished, the composting processes can start.

Second, composting involves a process of breaking down biodegradable scraps, these scraps will be transformed into fertilizer.
