On November 5th, 1872, Susan. B. Anthony did something no women in the United States could legally do. She voted. Since it was illegal for women to vote, she was arrested for “purposely casting an illegal vote”. Anthony claimed that because of the 14th amendment allowed women to be citizens and as citizens, they were able to vote. Susan B. Anthony was not allowed to testify for herself because she was a woman, found guilty by the all men jury, denied the request to poll the jury as well as the right for a new trail, and when the judge asked "Has the prisoner anything to say why sentence should not be pronounced?", she was denied the right to speak. Susan B. Anthony was fined $100, but she refused to pay saying “I will never pay a dollar of your unjust penalty… Resistance to tyranny is obedience to God”. (Facts on File) During the 1800’s, there were many activist movements going on in the fields of temperance, abolitionist, prison, and asylum reform. These inspired the women’s rights movement and leading the way for women's rights was Susan B. Anthony. Women in the 1800’s were treated poorly and had few rights. A woman was expected to remain in their sphere which was at home taking care of their families. At work, women were discriminated against and paid less than men for the same work. After marriage, women were not allowed to keep property they had once owned. Susan B. Anthony fought her entire life for women’s rights with determination for over 50 years giving everything she got to women as Susan B. Anthony once said “Cautious, careful people, always casting about to preserve their reputation and social standing, never can bring about a reform. Anthony believe that the only way for women to gain rights and get what they want was if they had a voice in the government. Susan B. Anthony published her newspaper The Revolution with the moto “Men, their rights, and nothing more; Women, their rights, and nothing less”. The two women suffrage groups combined to form National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) with Stanton as the president and Anthony as the vice. They went around to different states campaigning, gathering signatures for the petition, and arguing that the constitution did not forbid women to vote.
“Even in the modern day world, women struggle against discriminatory stigmas based on their sex. However, the beginnings of the feminist movement in the early 20th century set in motion the lasting and continuing expansion of women's rights” (Open Websites). One such organization that pushed for women’s rights was the National American Women Suffrage Association (NAWSA), established in 1890. The NAWSA was the largest suffrage organization and worked toward securing the right to vote. The NAWSA however was split into two, the NAWSA and the National Women’s Party (NWP), when suffragists were disagreeing on how to achieve their goal.
I, Susan B. Anthony, am a transcendentalists and women’s right activist. I was raised in a family where everyone was politically active. My family was active in the abolitionist movement and also the temperance movement. When I was campaigning what the temperance movement it inspired me to fight for women’s rights. The reason being is because when I attended a temperance convention I was denied the right to speak because I was a women. I was infuriated by this. I also realized that if women didn’t earn the right to vote no one would take any women seriously where politics were involved. The road to women's rights was long and hard, but many women helped push the right to vote, the one that was at the front of that group was Susan B. Anthony. She learned how to read and write at the age of three. She was put in a home school setting at the age of six because her other teacher refused to teach her long division. Since the school was run by strong willed women, Anthony received a new image of womanhood by being taught not only long division and grammar, but also manners and self worth.”
Susan B. Anthony is a one of a kind lady. She didn’t care what people thought of her. She wanted to show the world what she believed in. Susan B. Anthony played a major role in women’s suffrage by being involved in temperance movements when she was young, being a part of the National Woman Suffrage Association and the Nineteenth Amendment was passed fourteen years after her death.
Susan B. Anthony believed that women should have the same rights as men. She fought for this right in many different ways, but she is most famous for showing civil disobedience by voting illegally. Unfortunately, Anthony fought all her life for women’s rights, but her dreams were not fulfilled until 14 years after she died (“Susan” Bio). However in the mid 1800’s women began to fight for their rights, and in particular the right to vote. In July of 1848 the first women's rights conventions was held in Seneca Falls, New York. Elizabeth Cady Stanton was tasked with drawing up the Declaration of Sentiments a declaration that would define and guide the meeting. Soon after men and women signed the Declaration of Sentiments, this was the beginning of the fight for women’s rights. 1850 was the first annual National Women’s rights convention which continued to take place through to upcoming years and continued to grow each year eventually having a rate of 1000 people each convention. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were the two leaders of the Women’s Rights Movement, in 1869 they formed the National Woman suffrage Association with it’s primary goal being to achieve voting by Congressional Amendment to the Constitution. Going ahead a few years, in 1872 Susan B. Anthony was arrested for voting in the nation election, nevertheless, she continued to fight for women’s rights the rest of her life. Anthony was inspired to fight for women 's rights while she fought against the use of alcohol (“Susan” Bio). Susan B. Anthony was one of the strongest advocates of women’s rights, and is a representative figure of politically oriented types of feminist politics (Halsall). Anthony was denied a chance to speak at a temperance movement conference because of her being a women, she then decided that no one would ever take a woman seriously unless they had a right to vote. In 1852, Anthony and Stanton established the Women’s New York State Temperance Society. Anthony traveled to many places to campaign on women’s behalf (“Susan” Bio). In 1872, Anthony was arrested for casting an illegal vote in the presidential election. She was fined $100 but refused to pay (Halsall). A warrant went out for Anthony after a poll watcher filed a complaint. Anthony was charged for voting in a congressional election “without having a lawful right to vote and in violation of a section 19 of an Act of Congress.” At the hearing on November 29th, Anthony was questioned by her lawyer and was able to tell why she believed she had the right to vote, as authorized by the 14th amendment; therefore, she was not guilty of willingly and knowingly casting an illegal vote (Dismore). Anthony fought for women through campaigning for women’s rights as well as a suffragist for many around the nation. She had focused her attention on the need for women to reform law in their own interests, both to improve their conditions and to challenge the "maleness" of current law. Susan B. A women suffrage amendment was brought to the U.S. Congress in 1868 but failed to win support as well as a second amendment in 1878. In 1869 a woman named Elizabeth Cady Stanton got together with Susan B. Anthony, a women’s rights activist, and organized an association called the National Woman Suffrage Association. With this union they would gather with women and fight for women’s suffrage. Later, in 1890 they joined with their competitor the American Women Suffrage Association and became the National American Women Suffrage Association. “NAWSA adopted a moderate approach to female suffrage, eschewing some of the more radical feminism of other women’s rights groups in favor of a national plan designed to gain widespread support” (3). What the association did was they changed their initial tactic towards suffrage for women so that they can be able to obtain support from all over. Having little to no movement on the national front, suffragists took the next step to sate level. That was when Eastern states granted women suffrage, but hadn’t spread to Western states.
Women were getting tired of not having the same rights as men, so they wanted to make a move to change this. Women got so tired of staying at home while the men worked. Women wanted to get an education. So they fought for their freedom. Abigail Adams said to her husband, “in the new code of laws, remember the ladies and do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands.” John’s reply was, “I cannot but laugh. Depend upon it, we know better than to repeal our masculine systems.” These were said in 1776. The women’s suffrage actually began in 1848, which was the first women’s rights convention which was held in Seneca Falls, New York. Prominent leaders began campaigning for the right to vote at State and federal levels. Susan B. Anthony was the leader for getting women their rights in the United States. Susan B. Anthony voted in Rochester, NY for the presidential election. This occurred in 1872. She was, “arrested, tried, convicted, and fined $100.” She refused to pay the fine. Supporters of The Equal Rights Amendment would march, rally, petition, and go on hunger strikes.
It was Theodore Roosevelt, who stated that, “Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care”, conveying the idea that with no voice comes no change. In the morning of August 26, 1920, the 19th amendment was ratified, which centralized mainly on the enfranchisement of women. Today, they have the legal right to vote, and the ability to speak openly for themselves, but most of all they are now free and equal citizens. However this victorious triumph in American history would not have been achieved without the strong voices of determined women, risking their lives to show the world how much they truly cared. Women suffragists in the 19th century had a strong passion to change their lifestyle, their jobs around the nineteenth century were limited to just children, family, and domestic duties. It consisted of a very low rate of education, and job opportunities. They could not share their opinion publicly and were expected to support their male family members and husbands during the time. Women knew that the way to enfranchisement was going to be tenacious, and full of obstacles along the way. Therefore a new organization was formed, The National American Women Association (NAWSA), representing millions of women and Elizabeth Cady Stanton as the first party president. This organization was founded in 1890, which strategized on the women getting education in order to strengthen their knowledge to prepare for the suffrage fight. In 1869, two organizations for the promotion of women’s suffrage were founded with different opinions on how to reach the same goal. The National Women’s Suffrage Association (NWSA) was headed by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. This group opposed the 15th amendment, while suggesting the passage and ratification of another, new amendment, specifically granting women the right to vote. This was considered a more radical view on the matter, and promoted a wide variety of other feminist views as well. The other organization, called the American Women’s Suffrage Association (AWSA), supported the 15th amendment, while calling for yet another amendment for women’s enfranchisement. This organization was more focused on trying to make this and other feminist reforms seem less radical, and more in tune with the values of the American people. After the negative response to the proposal of a new federal amendment, both groups tried new approaches, such as challenging the constitutionality of their exclusion from the vote in the supreme court, only to be rejected again.
Women had an arduous time trying to demand the rights they deserved to have. Women suffragist made associations and paraded down the street to endeavor rights. Two associations were made up, the National Woman Suffrage Association and the American Women Suffrage Association. The National Women Suffrage Association is also known as NWSA was developed by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. This association work for suffrage at the federal level. They tried press for more extensive institutional changes, such as married women being granted right to own land. The American Women Suffrage Association is also known as AWSA was developed by Lucy Stone and Julia Ward Howe. This association aimed to secure the ballot through state legislation. The ladies at NWSA refused to endorse the amendment because it did not give women the ballot.
