Researching and Attending a Cultural Event: The Shabbata Dinner

For my final topic I decided to research and attend a cultural event. During spring break I was at my friend’s house. It was a Friday morning and I decided to just hang around his house. As the day went on they asked me if I was doing anything for the rest of the day. As I said no they invited me to attend their Shabbat dinner, a day where the family comes together and unleash stress and enjoy company. I accepted and found a great opportunity to not only enjoy the experience, but learn about some Jewish tradition.
Some background before I went to the Shabbat dinner was knowing who I was with. I knew that my friend went through something’s while choosing his college. In high school he was a pretty decent basketball player and his family boasted about him all the time as all their family does to their children. Lustig relates this to being a In-group collectivism because the parents take pride in their kids accomplishments (117). So I knew how important family is to this culture. My friend’s family is all about being happy, Lustig calls it affective autonomy, meaning that their culture is all about making individuals happy (113). I know a couple of his family members and out of all the incidences that I seen, the family really just wants the individual to be happy. They care about the decisions they make and everything, but they want the kids to be happy and guide them gently into a path they feel they could be most successful.
As we were getting ready to go to his grandparents’ house I was confused what to wear. They said wear whatever I want so I wore jeans and a shirt. Some of the family went in sweats and shorts. We arrived at his grandparents’ house at around seven. As more and more of the family came into the house I seen a...

This showed me that depending on what the person is doing shows that persons importance to his life. I felt that in the Jewish culture event that I attended to showed me that based off of work, family time, and religion time. They want to make the most out of their day. Another cultural aspect I have seen is how “Culture is a learned set of shared interpretations about beliefs, values, norms, and social practices, which affect the behaviors of a relatively large group of people” (Lustig 25). I noticed that the way they conducted themselves around this event is learned. I did not know everything about the event, which means I would have to learn about the culture to be apart of it.
