My idea was to make a video of some sort, some kind of an educational video. I decided that my area of interaction would be Environment. I narrowed it down to two topics which were : Palm Oil Destruction and China Pollution. I already knew quite a lot about both of the topics, but I decided to go with a topic that affects us and the world. Therefore, I chose Palm Oil Destruction which affects us in many ways. I will make a video about an environmental issue and post it on Youtube, to gain awareness and to learn more about this topic, those are my goals. “Palm is one of the largest on going environmental disasters currently.”(Care2) A massive force that is pushing orangutans, a mankind's closest relative, to extinction. A force that is eliminating every piece of natural forest in its way, and a force that emits immense numbers of Carbon Dioxide into the air leading to greater climate problems. However, Most of all its a force that needs to be stopped. Therefore, I have decided to raise environmental awareness through a video. My goal is to get 500 views on youtube I decided to choose this topic because this affects all of us in some way. Palm Oil causes nonstop harm to the world that we live in today. In biology class last year, My teacher was briefly talking about Palm Oil and how it was so bad, so when I got home I did a little bit of research and indeed found that Palm Oil was terrible. So through the 8 Personal Project I have the opportunity to find out everything about Palm Oil and at the same time I could maybe make a difference, or at least try. The Area of Interaction that my Personal Project connects to is Environmental and Educational. I mostly focused on the Environmental harm that Palm Oil was causing. The last source I used was Titled “Palm oil and tropical deforestation” and it talked about a different subject of Palm oil which was carbon dioxide emissions. As huge amounts of rainforests are being burned down lots of carbon dioxide is released. Therefore, “Indonesia is the world’s third largest emitter of global warming pollution, after China and the United States, and its emissions come overwhelmingly from deforestation” (Palm Oil and Tropical Deforestation) I didn’t omit any sources in my research and video, all of the sources I found I incorporated in my video in some way. Again, each source was unique in its own way. Therefore, I did use every source, some more then other but I did use all of them.

Usually, authors that want to point out and raise social awareness on issues of this nature, tend to be direct and straightforward about it. However, Saukko has taken it to the next level by approaching the readers in a unique way that will catch more of their attention and hopefully move their emotions on the topic.
...Alberta tar sands oil extraction project should be ended immediately. It should be stopped until the government has a better understanding of the effects that it has on the surrounding areas, including the wildlife and humans. The extraction of oil is being pushed because of the large possibility of capital being gained from the project by the government, which has lead to negligence by the government of the impacts. When people, animals, and plants are dying at such a high rate, the Canadian government shouldn’t be watching, they should be acting before the tar sands oil extraction project become too big to stop. This project has allowed me to answer the questions I had when I started the paper and allowed me to formulate my own opinions about the topic. Hopefully, it interested the audience enough that they will research the topic more and make up their own mind.

The specific environmental issue/problem I will be talking about is the Deforestation in the Amazon. This has caused a severe environmental problem and a subsequent decline in well-being. The Amazon rainforest is known to be one of the Earth's largest rainforest and also one of the greatest natural resources. Many people call the Amazon the “Lungs of our planet” due to the vegetation. Since there is so much vegetation in the rainforest it will continuously take the carbon dioxide and turns it into oxygen. After researching about the deforestation of the Amazon I came across some statistics and information that really shocked me. Rhett Butler stated that “60-70 percent of deforestation in the Amazon results from cattle ranches while the rest mostly results from small-scale subsistence agriculture. Despite the widespread press attention, large-scale farming (i.e. soybeans) currently contributes relatively little to total deforestation in the Amazon. Most soybean cultivation takes place outside the rainforest in the neighboring cerrado grassland ecosystem and in areas that have already been cleared. Logging results in forest degradation but rarely direct deforestation. However, studies have showed a close correlation between logging and future clearing for settlement and farming.” After reading this I was shocked, but there also is some good news I came across. Vegetable oil is used abundantly and oil palm trees are the quickest producing oil crops, concluding them necessary to satisfy the demand for edible oils. I have addressed how I plan to carry out my exit project. I talked about what is required of me to complete my exit project, what I have done so far, and what I still need to do towards my progress and completion of my time lapse video. Doing this project has helped me discover my purposes for choosing it: to expand my knowledge, experience, and technique on photography, explore my photography capabilities, and to give me a overall opinion on my future in relation to photography. I also will use this project and the experiences that come with it as a test of my faith in myself, patience, and perseverance.
Although more people are aware of the impacts we have on our environment, there are still people that choose to ignore scientific evidence, or do not fully understand the consequences. Further education and research are critical components in an effort to become more sustainable. Fortunately, younger generations are learning about the need to address environmental issues so that changes can be made to ensure our way of life is sustainable.
As with most group projects, I started out with a basic understanding of the issue; essentially pollution and environmental changes humans make impact the environment in very bad ways. I grew up with a family who believes in intelligent design, young earth theory, and they all vehemently deny that anything humans do cause damage to the planet- everything reported in the news or by scientists are part of a larger “Liberal Democrat conspiracy.” Thus, my views had become largely hazy and even though I pride myself on being a Liberal, educated, intelligent young person, sometimes I was unsure what was actually true or what had been dramatized or exaggerated by scientists or the media to actually get people to pay attention.
