Many nations use energy generated from burning fossil fuels like oil, coal and natural gas. However, with the rapid growth of population, the demand for energy is increasing and this means burning fossil fuels to create energy generates emissions such as carbon dioxide and monoxide which in turn affects our environment, health and warms our planet. The long term use of fossil fuels is not viable, therefore, to combat the dependency on fossil fuels, renewable energy sources must be adopted to maintain the economic growth and development and to maintain the environment and prevents more risks of global warming. As it is stated by Turner (687) “we cannot continue to burn fossil fuels and somehow sequester the produced CO2 efficiently enough to actually address global warming.”Renewable energy is energy generated from natural sources, and it provides a clean, and feasible long-term alternative to fossil fuels. According to Mingyuan (356), “The legal definition for renewable energy involves any energy derived from the sun.” This energy sources replenishes themselves over a period of time without depleting the Earth’s resources (David 106). Renewable energy provides long term social, environmental and economic benefits. Renewable energy lowers the energy costs, creates jobs, eliminates air pollution, promotes the growth and stability of the nation, and preserves the environment. Another major advantage of renewable energy is that it can be regenerated, and this makes it sustainable because it can never run out. A non-renewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption. In addition, Nuclear Energy, Coal/Petroleum/Gas (Fossil Fuels), and Coal are all examples of this non-renewable resource. Nuclear energy, uses Uranium to create energy, and is a non-renewable resource because once the Uranium is used, it is gone. Coal, Petroleum, and Natural Gas are considered non-renewable because they cannot be replenished in a short period of time; these are called “Fossil Fuels”.
Renewable energy is derived from natural resources such as wind, rain, sunlight, waves, and much more. Over the years, engineers have found various efficient ways to use and harness the renewable energy. One of the main advantages of this type of energy is the fact that it can be used for a long period of time without it being dispatched. Also, this type of energy is cleaner and much more beneficial to the environment since it results in a very little amount of greenhouse gas emission. Renewable energy is also cheaper and more affordable compared to any other sources of generated energy. Due to these advantages of the renewable energy, engineers have decided to find more efficient ways of using renewable energy. The year is 2200. The world is going through a fossil fuel shortage. Oil reserves are almost completely consumed and it is becoming impossible to find new fossil fuel sources. Not prepared for this event to occur, The United States, has no alternative options. As a result of the oil shortage, the standard of living deteriorates. Heat in homes, supermarkets full of food, and transportation, all basic necessities taken for granted, will be depleted because fossil fuels are used to power almost everything. The key to the prevention of this future is renewable energy. Unfortunately the support for the use of renewable energy is weak and ineffective. Unless the US puts forth effort to research and promote the use of renewable energy to consumers, conversion from fossil fuels to renewable energy will no longer be an option.
Energy is the basic necessity of daily life. Nowadays, dependence on fossil fuels for energy needs becoming lower in numerous countries due to the potential of renewable energy to supply sustainable energy to the huge populations in many developing countries who are short of clean and continues energy. Generally, renewable energy can be defined as energy that is derived from natural resources which are constantly replenished and theoretically inexhaustible. Fossil fuels on the other hand can be described as energy that cannot be renewed and will eventually diminish. Thus, in many developing countries renewable energy is the alternative energy to replace non-renewable energy or commonly known as fossil fuels. In addition, according to Sorensen (2004), there is a greater demand for renewable energy sources nowadays due to the uncertainty of fuel price rise in living expenses. Commonly, there are many types of renewable energy available in our world such as wind power, biomass energy, solar energy, hydroelectric power and geothermal energy. However, the main three example of renewable energy are hydroelectric power, solar and biomass energy (Refer to Figure 1 in Appendix 1).
In the debate of traditional energy vs. renewable energy the clear winner is renewable energy. Renewable energy is vastly superior over traditional energy because it decreases dependence on foreign resources, produces no emissions, and is not limited in quantity. Opponents of renewable energy are likely to argue that this is not the case and that instead, traditional energy is better because it creates job growth, is reliable during all hours and climates, and comes with a lower cost. These advantages however are either misconstrued or hardly outweigh the long-term positive benefits of renewable energy.
The United States currently relies heavily on coal, oil, and natural gas for its energy. While the price of natural gas per barrel continues to plummet, the United States is constantly seeking new sources of renewable energy. Renewable energy consists of any type of natural resource (solar power, ocean power, wind power, rain, snow, etc.). that naturally and automatically replenishes itself. Renewable energy is important because it is infinite and everlasting, meaning our children and our children’s children will be able to utilize these resources long after we are gone.
Renewable energy is one of energy resources that generate from natural resources and always regenerate and never run out. Around 16% of global energy used in the world come from the renewable energies. Many of renewable energies projects arise in rural and remote areas to contribute in developed these areas.
There are many types of Alternative Energy Sources. The different energy sources are hydro and solar power, wind, biomass and geothermal energy. Throughout the world people don’t recognize that we use every these energy sources day for our own personal use. The energy sources are not only free but they are also renewable. It is a little more costly to use these energy sources, but going green is what’s best for our environment. Using these alternative sources will create fresher air, eliminate over half of the pollution caused by fossil fuels, and protect our earth a lot longer. I’m going to explain these five expensive, but very worth it energy sources.
I am certain that all have heard of the terms green house gases, fossil fuels, and global warming. Have you ever questioned what will happen if nothing is done about the environmental problems facing the world today? What if I answer you that, we can merely use the power from the sun to power up our entire planet without the use of harmful energy sources, which affect our atmosphere? The power from the sun is what we call solar power. Solar power is the energy that comes from the sun as light and heat energy, and then it is later converted into electrical energy through solar panels (Nelson, 2008). This kind of power is completely free, right? Why should we put a lot of expense on other sources of energy, when there is a complete free and healthy power? It is evident that solar energy is a healthy source of energy, which will help stop global warming all together, but it is economically efficient to switch everything to solar energy. Solar energy is capable of becoming the world's future power supply because, it is renewable, eco-friendly, and extremely efficient when strategically placed.
Energy can be put into two broad categories Renewable energy and none renewable energy. Renewable energy sources can be reused continually as they are abundantly found in nature. All of them are non-polluting but devices used to collect the energy may impact the environment adversely. They are free but producing storage equipment or converting them into another form of energy may be costly.
Why do we need to rely on renewable sources? Most of the energy that we use today comes from fossil fuels such as natural gas, coal, and oil. All of these resources are non-renewable, so you can finish one day. In order to have a better world and a healthy environment for the future, people are trying to obtain energy from natural resources instead of non-renewable sources. In the lecture “Renewable energy resources” (2014), Mistry focuses on some advantages and disadvantages of renewable energy.
With the depletion of fossil fuel resources comes speculations and debates about alternative energy sources. The world, including the Philippines, is practically dependent on a dwindling non-renewable source of energy. Today, experts are debating about and considering three options: Nuclear, Solar, or Wind Energy. Everyone has been accustomed to the bad image of nuclear energy as a result of the Chernobyl and Fukushima incidents above all others. The popular belief is that radiation from a nuclear meltdown is very harmful to humans and other living things—which is true—and that nuclear power plants are very dangerous and not ideal—which is not. According to Smith, et. al (n.d), all the nuclear disasters that ever occurred were caused by human error and natural disasters like tsunamis, not one because of system failure. Putting the false beliefs aside, with proper engineering and adequate maintenance by experts, a nuclear power plant is a very ideal and viable source of energy for the following reasons:
Using fossil fuels such as coal and oil is inefficient, dangerous, and otherwise a process that is known to eventually fail as a long lasting energy source. Yet, there is hope for the future of energy, this new hope has many shapes and forms, but requires a chance to be fully implemented in our everyday life. Such energy sources like solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, and hydro power are the key to our future. These energy sources are proven to be long lasting, safe, more reliable, and the next innovation. In short, all Americans should switch to renewable energy, resulting in a safer and more efficient world.
