‘Death, the most frightening of bad things, is nothing to us; since when we exist death is not yet present, and when death is present, then we do not exist’ (Epicurus) Death is a common topic of speculation and frequently anxiety. Death is terrifying to people for many reasons: they do not know what to anticipate from death, they fear the penalty of gods, they dread not achieving certain goals or things in life, etc. Epicurus argues that when we die we no longer exist. When it comes to death many different factors come to play, whether the person himself believes in life after death, if the person believes in a certain religion or whether a person is a nonbeliever. All these leads to different perceptions of death, many beliefs stem from what they are told as kids or what they learn later on in life, therefore depending on what certain people believe there are many people who fear death and there are those who do not. A global 2012 poll reports that 59 per cent of the worlds population is religious meaning that a large majority of the world have a view of what happens after death. What is Fear? Fear is a reaction in the brain triggered by a stressful stimulus and often triggers physical reactions. This the biological definition of fear, fear however strikes deep within ones psyche; it alters ones life and takes it of controlling all aspects of it. In this case, the fear of death completely takes over ones life and determines what he or she does in their life. For example, many people who fear death are often scared too do adventurous activities or do anything where they can get hurt, they avoid many areas and avoid people because they fear for there lives. In a world of change, death is the only constant; the prospect of death inspires fear in the majority of humanity. It is therefore a choice that one must take in order to adhere to the pressure of fear and truly be terrified of death as well having a miserable life. Or one could choose to live to the fullest and not care about death. The notion of death is merely an end point on the timeline of life and it is time that is so critical, that we must take advantage of the little time we have on this earth to motivate and make not only one’s self happy but help everyone around him.
