In James Joyce’s short story, “Eveline,” takes place in Ireland, Dublin in a small neighborhood throughout the 1900’s. Eveline falls in love with a man named Frank, who is a Sailor and has a home in Buenos Ayres, Argentina. She was left to make a difficult decision between the love of her life or to continue staying in her same life . At the end she chooses to stay with her familiar life. Through her Irish customs, fears, and Catholic beliefs she chooses to abandon her dreams for a better life.
Evelin’s Irish customs played an important role in her decision making. In the early 1900’s the Irish people were not open to many new things. In the short story it says “She gave her entire wages …He said she used to squander the money, that she had no head, that he wasn’t going to give her his hard earned money…” This shows me their was no equal rights for women’s. Eveline didn’t have much rights like we have now in the 21st century. She didn’t have money or savings to run away, she had nothing.
