Rape and Social Disorganization Theory
Introduction
There are different definitions of rape and why it occurs, I will be discussing the different types and characteristics of rapes well as why I chose to use the social disorganization theory to discuss rape, and the reasons behind why it happens using that theory. The theory correlates the social control of the rapist’s neighborhood and the lack of control, which can often lead to delinquency.

Acquaintance rapes can often occur in relationships and most never get reported die to the fear of what might happen if they do, and what the persons family might think. Officially, however the data shows that about half the rapes that occur involve strangers because one is more likely to report a rape if they do not know whom the perpetrator is. Rape as a violent act is often times sexually motivated, however there are three subcategories according to Groth and Birnbaum, the anger rape, the power rape, and the sadistic rape. Anger rape involves the expression of anger or rage on the victim and there is a lot more physical assault as well and is not for the sexual gratification, it is thought that these rapes aren’t carefully thought out but are spontaneous. The power rape is exactly what is sounds like, the assertion of power or dominance on the victim and is less about sexual gratification as it is the expression of power and causing physical harm, these are more interested in “conquering” women, and it is thought that these rapes are premeditated. In the sadistic rape the desire is to torture and torment the victim with the use of sexuality and aggression, and it is thought that that these rapes tend to have been considerably planned and premeditated (Hagan, 2013).
