The film, “The Quiz Show” is about the famous public revealing of a rigged television production called Twenty-One during the 1950s. The shows main attraction, a Jewish Queen’s resident named Herbert Stempel, rose to fame as families around the county watched the bright contestant correctly answer question after question, week after week. As ratings and profits began to plateau sponsors and producers felt a change of face was necessary. Producers recruit Charles Van Doren an instructor from Columbia University who happens to be the son of Mark Van Doren a prominent poet and distinguished academic. Stempel is instructed to throw the game on a rather simple question, in order to make room for the shows new upcoming star. Although outraged, Stempel follows along with the plan. Producers corner Van Doren and subtly propose rigging the show in his favor. At first Van Doren is appalled, and refuses the offer, but producers ease him into agreeing through strategic planning and manipulation. As fame and fortune overwhelmed the new contestant his morals slowly slip away.
Stempel becomes jealous of Van Dorens immense success, and tries to find ways to revenge the show for dropping him. He soon finds his answer when Harvard graduate and shrewd Congressional lawyer Richard Goodwin senses some uncertainty with the integrity of the show. Through the help of Stempel, and other past contestants who provide clear data confirming that producers prep players prior to the show, Goodwin is able to gather enough evidence to prove Twenty-one is rigged. Van Doren begins to crack under the pressure of the show and the weight of his guilt. In contrast, they do not always have a positive effect on viewers. Although they are entertaining which is an important aspect of theatre culture, they also are often misguiding. Many spectators take movies at face value, without considering that they may not exactly qualify as primary source material. Even when an historical event is fabricated to teach or enhance a moral message, it still doesn’t compensate for bending the truth. Moviegoer’s may have a positive experience and gain some skewed historical perspective, perhaps better than what they knew before the movie, but they loose out on the truth and therefore, a genuine understanding of the historical event, and its significance.
Films are necessary in our time period because the human eye can articulate the message intended through sight allowing visual imagination to occur. In the book, world 2 by Max Brooks, he creates a character by the name Roy Elliot who was a former movie director. Roy Elliot manages to make a movie titled “Victory at Avalon: The Battle of the Five Colleges” and some how it goes viral. Similarly, Frank Capra’s film, “Why we Fight” expresses a sense of understanding the meaning of wars. Films do not inevitably portray truth because they display what the film director views as important and beneficial for people to know.
In today's day and age, it's rare to see famous historical events and societal disasters not be picked apart by film directors and then transformed into a box office hit. What these films do is put a visual perspective on these events, sometimes leaving viewers speculating if whatever was depicted is in fact entirely true. I have never felt that feeling more than after I finished watching Oliver Stone’s JFK.

There is no secret that films in the genre of biopic can often stretch the truth. These types of movies are frequently mere depictions of myth that is loosely based on factual accounts rather than being accurate representations of history. Many ethical dilemmas arise from these circumstances. Among those are the damaging representations that may skew a viewer’s perception of how history may have actually played out. Should filmmakers warn viewers that certain historical details of their forthcoming motion picture have been changed for the purpose of film? What are the editorial ethics when important details pertaining to vital pieces of history are left on the proverbial cutting room floor? The brand new film “Cesar Chavez” does a lot of work to bring about the often untold story of the California migrant farmworkers labor activism and organizing, yet in the process, manages to erase the pertinent contributions of the Filipino who many consider as the pioneers of these movements.
One of the greatest captivators of public interest in the 1950s was the emerging quiz game show on television. The public, naively trustful, fell in love with television game shows. People found them to be new, exciting, and similar to the captivating radio quiz shows so popular before television's advent. Some game shows were developed primarily for laughs, while others were played for prizes or large sums of money. These game shows were so popular that at their peak, twenty-two of them were concurrently on the air. They varied in format from the basic question and answer type to the naming of popular musical tunes. Public familiarity with the general structure of the quizzes, coupled with the strikingly high stakes, precipitated extreme interest in these shows, and led to the unbelievable popularity of successful returning contestants (Anderson, 9). Virtually everyone with a television set in their home tuned in weekly to their favorite game shows in the interest of seeing the contestants, with whom they identified more and more as the weeks went by, succeed in the quiz games. The popularity of quiz games was staggering. In August of 1955 approximately 32 million television sets and 47,560,000 viewers, almost one third of the nation, tuned in to see The $64,000 Question (Anderson, 8).

In Defiance, the deviations from the historical record are used to emphasis certain aspects of the movie. In the beginning sequence the audience can see how there is a mesh of video of Hitler imposed with footage that the director made to look older. If a person had never seen the original footage they would not see the subtle mixture of fact and fiction. But this practice raises the question should directors be able to add or subtract from the historical accuracy of a movie, especially one with a subject matter such as the Holocaust. In the case of movies that are based on the real life experiences of individuals the deviation makes the matter more accessible to a large group of people. When a play is presented on film, the director takes the script, and with poetic license, interprets it. A film not only contains the actual words of the author (in this case Shakespeare), but it includes action, acting, and cinematographic techniques; the three are used to better portray the author’s story. Using these elements, the director’s interpretation of the plot is reinforced. The film provides symbolic images and a visual interpretation, hence Shakespeare’s play “Macbeth” is better understood by the viewers.

In literature, the word “hyperbole” is used to describe an extreme exaggeration. The tactic of using such excessive exaggerations for entertainment purposes is one often exercised by the “fame and fortune” hungry movie makers of Hollywood. Sometimes, historical accounts may need just a little (or a lot) more flare to bring them success on the big screen. Whether it come in the form of an especially evil villain or a strong female lead whose behavior would be considered inappropriate in the depicted time period, historical inaccuracies often replace fact to help roll in the big bucks. Film and literature are two media forms that are so closely related, that we often forget there is a distinction between them. We often just view the movie as an extension of the book because most movies are based on novels or short stories. Because we are accustomed to this sequence of production, first the novel, then the motion picture, we often find ourselves making value judgments about a movie, based upon our feelings on the novel. It is this overlapping of the creative processes that prevents us from seeing movies as distinct and separate art forms from the novels they are based on.
