The Pursuit of Survival in Exchange For Happiness in Charles Dickens's David Copperfield:
In Charles Dickens's David Copperfield, there are many lower class citizens who are treated with disdain and even disinterest by every social class that is above them. While the novel is clearly a social commentary on the treatment of the poor in 19th century London, the characters in the novel do very little to remove themselves from their downtrodden lives until they are forced to change. I will argue in this paper that a majority of the characters in David Copperfield change only when change is forced upon them. I agree with these 12 critics that a majority of the characters in David Copperfield do not change without being motivated to pursue change in their lives.
For instance, when Micawber writes his letters of woe expressing his desire to pay his creditors, he is most eloquent, but his actions speak louder than his words do. In her critical paper “The Long History of “In Short”: Mr. Micawber, Letter-Writers, and Literary Men, “ Laura Rotunno argues that, “Micawber...accentuates what the letter-writers promise: wealth, wisdom, and security if one believes in and obeys society's rules. The result...is that his letters capture just how far removed...social success is from the life of Victorian laborers and debtors” (Rotunno, 426). In other words, Micawber tells the recipient of his appeal for help whatever he feels is necessary to open their wallet to assist him out of his present financial difficulty. He promises that he will become a new man over and over, but continues to waste every opportunity of success that crosses his path.

Thus, it is David Copperfield's ability to see enemies as fantasies and Traddles ability to let his mind wander when he is faced with trouble that help them deal with reality. But, by dealing with reality, they can move on with their lives on their own terms and at their own sppeds.
In conclusion, while the narrator had each character in David Copperfield, deal with their past, with the exception of Mr. Dick, who did not remember his past, it was this resolution of their past actions and misdeeds that helped the reader close out each character in their mind. It must also be said that a majority of the characters did not change without being motivated to pursue change in their lives. It is this last minute change that resolves any moral dilemmas that the characters have left unresolved.

Characters who yearn for appreciation, the portrayal of a depressing ambiance, and the repetition of buried guilt are a few resemblances of the Masterpiece rendition of Great Expectations and Dickens’ novel. In both adaptations, many characters struggle with the loneliness and troubles of life. Although life’s issues differ from when the novel was written until now, the audience can still relate to the characters. This classic story has traveled through many era’s and the moral is still understandable to all people who have enjoyed the tale in its many different formats. It is especially relatable to those who have struggled to cope with the challenges of life.
Dickens’ novel, A Tale of Two Cities, has many metaphors, including “the great blue flies,” knitting and the sea to explore the important theme of human inhumanity towards the fellow man into his story. The metaphors are perfect symbols to explain how insensitive and cruel people can be towards one another, despite their pain and suffering. Nevertheless, Dickens includes not only moments for the reader to feel empathy for the victims of the revolution, but also moments of love. This story shows that inhumanity towards the fellow man is a problem in societies that will never be overcome; however, the world would be a better place if everyone strived to have compassion and respect for everyone, regardless of social class, religion, race, or money.
Social class has existed in our society since its foundation. Working class, middle class, upper middle class, or upper class, whatever your standing, social class can affect your place in society. Social class can be defined by where you live, who you talk to, where you get an education, even by the clothes you wear. These may not be definite determinants of social class, but categorization of people becomes easier when looking at these factors. In previous papers, I have claimed that social class is a result of capitalism. Though, I still believe this to be true, there are many factors that can affect social class and vice versa. Theorists have looked at different aspects of how these can affect social class. In my paper I am going to explore capitalism, stratification, racism, segregation, and education and their relationship with social class and how this can cause social conflict; I will have a primary focus of how Weber, DuBois, and Marx views this relationship.
The theme of conflict is manifested in a variety of forms through different characters and groups. Grenville illustrates inner conflict particularly through the protagonist, William Thornhill. In part one, ‘London’, Grenville exhibits Thornhill’s conflict with his sense of belonging and identity through the line ‘He was still only sixteen, and no one in his family had ever gone so far’. These examples, that are planted within the novel, relate to both the society in Dickens' writing and his reality. In the novels Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and David Copperfield by Charles Dickens, the protagonists are retrospectively looking back on their lives and illustrating tribulations they endured regarding familial, social, and romantic relationships. At the end of both novels, the central characters find harmony in idealistic partners. Ultimately, both novels demonstrate the necessity of eminent relationships, the impingement of negative relationships, and the experiences that led both protagonists to recognize the difference between which relationships were hindering and which were constructive.
In Oliver Twist and Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, both main characters refuse to except the poor hand the world has dealt them. Pip and Oliver reach a great epiphany in regards to social injustice, and in turn rebel against the system that oppresses them. They are tired of being mistreated and neglected, and therefore decide to make a stand. Charles Dickens exhibits through Oliver and Pip that the revolt of the weak against the strong results from the oppression of the poor. As a result of their revolt against the system, Pip and Oliver are ostracized for their non-conformist ideals. Thus change in an oppressing and conformist society can only be achieved through change in moral, social, and political instincts.

Readers feel that money and power do corrupt, and that social distinction is something that should not occur, even though it does. Even in the singular case of Pip, one can see just how obsessed people become with social class, instead of focusing on the things that really count, such as the people one loves. As Linda K. Hughes of the New York Times once said, “…Victorians were almost obsessed with becoming better people (social class)... This story truly captures that age,” which strengthens my point that Dickens’ was trying to portray this obsession in a negative way. The series of events that occur within the book parallel the real world and are indicative of true human nature.

Power, prestige and wealth for the most part seem to be cohesive in nature. As with any form of power over another there will be abuses of the power that is given. Even though the ability to remove this abuser from power has become easier over the centuries, there is still some discrimination amongst the social classes. The only weapon capable of bringing an end to social injustice is an enlightened well-educated mind. It is made evident by Norman Cantor’s book that as much as society seems to advance and change, its social constructs remain relatively unchanged.
Throughout the novel, the author explores the class system of Victorian England, ranging from the criminal Magwitch, to the poor peasants Joes and Biddy, to the middle class of Pumblechook, and finally to the rich Miss Havisham. This theme, being the procedure that people where categorized into classes, is essential throughout the story, since Pip realizes that wealth and class are less significant than affection, loyalty, and inner worth. The most important fact to be remembered about the post-industrial revolution class system is that Dickens ignores the nobility and aristocracy in favor of the main theme of this novel: ambition.
