People believe that buying something or paying a little money is a magical way that will make every problem we face in life disappear. It represents that buying something also brings another problem in people lives like things that can be broken, scratched, or stolen and need to be cleaned, organized, managed, and maintained. In addition, shopping never quenches people’s desire for gratification and someone always has more. Gratification is hard to find in the purchase of more stuff and no matter how much have, it’s never enough. Patrick Lapeyre published the novel “Life Is Short and Desire Endless”, and argues that people’s desire is limitless and endless, so people can’t satisfy their life, even if they have no problem and have everything that they want it in. One of my friends spends money recklessly to solve her problems or relieve her stress, but it doesn’t make any positive progress on her problems. Hill illustrates the environmental impact by showing statistics of global warming today versus the past century, and how consumerism is leading to a hotter climate. Hill debunks claims of buying happiness by discussing a study where stress hormones spike to their highest when people are managing their personal belongings. Hill’s most prominent example that consumerism is not the answer is himself, as he discusses some of the most stressful times of his life being right after coming into a large sum of money and buying whatever he fancied. When Hill concludes his article, he states that “I have less—and enjoy more. My space is small. My life is big” (213).
The novel The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by author Rebecca Skloot is about a black woman whose cells were used by doctors to study medicine without her knowledge or her permission. Rebecca Skloot first heard of Henrietta Lacks when she was 16-years-old in her college biology class. Her professor, Donald Defler, mentioned Henrietta briefly during his lesson about cells. Defler talked about how Henrietta’s cells helped scientists learn all they know about cell and cell culture today, and allowed them to develop disease-fighting drugs to combat herpes, leukemias, influenza, hemophilia and Parkinson’s disease. Although Defler did acknowledge the fact that it was Henrietta’s cells who helped change the future of medicine, all Defler added was that she was a black woman. Skloot was unsatisfied with this information and she wanted to know more about Henrietta Lacks, such as “Where was she from?... Did she know how important her cells were? Did she have any children?” (Skloot 4). The problem was, though, that no one cared to find out anything about the person whose cells were famous all over the world. Most people, in fact, did not even realize that her name was Henrietta Lacks, and not Helen Lane. All people knew about this woman was that her cancerous cells were referred to as HeLa cells. This is proven in the book when Louie is in the concentration camp and has to hold up a large piece of wood while having the Japanese guards stare at him. There are several methods of achieving immortality, each with its own problems. The first of this methods is to reverse or stop aging, as this is logically one of the main causes of death. In scientific terms this is called biological immortality. A cell or organism that does not age, or stops to age at some point, is biological immortal. Though this seems impossible there are in fact some species which naturally have this ability. An example of this is the Turritopsis nutricula, a jellyfish. Once the jellyfish has become mature it is capable of reversing its aging cycle and to turn itself into a younger version of itself, making it technically immortal.
