Pros and Cons of Social Technology

Do you think social networking is a fad? Well, in fact, it already changed the way we communicate. With just one click we can let the entire world know. In this day and age, we have access to the world with the simple touch of a button. Social media has been an integral part in our daily lives. Last Thursday, I got home at 3:30 P.M, sat down at the kitchen table and within 20 seconds, pulled out my phone and opened up Facebook followed by Instagram then Twitter and lastly Vine. Before I knew it, it was already 7:00 P.M and I had completely forgotten to read Fight in the Fields, study for my quiz the next day, and do my homework from all of my other classes. So, I immediately went to my room and stumbled with my books. I really did regret spending too much time on the Internet. Everything we need is now in our pockets. This unlimited access can help or hurt us, depending on how it is used. Like coins, there are always two sides in everything especially in social networking, positive and negative or advantages and disadvantages. Here are my evaluations regarding this matter.

I will start with the negative aspects. Social networking has changed the way we communicate with our friends and associates. With hundreds of millions of users online, these tools not only attract friends and family wanting to stay in touch, but they also attract people wanting to know about you for the wrong reasons. Social networking site users are vulnerable to security attacks such as hackings, identity theft or even robbery (Topping). For example, by telling the world you are on vacation, you’re letting potential thieves know where you are, how long you’ll be gone, and where you live.
