Proposal of a Research Essay: Ethnicity and Race

The following proposal consists of five parts which summarize our aims and sources for our assessment of research essay:
1. The broad topic that we have selected is Ethnicity and Race.
2. This broad topic has further been broken down to focus mainly on the level or quality of health care received by people of particular racial and ethnic groups and how this may differ, providing that any difference is found between these groups. For the purpose of this essay, the concept of health care refers to both medical and psychological health care.
3. The research topic that we will be examining is: What factors promote disparities in health care amongst racial and ethnic groups in Trinidad’s public hospitals?
• Does a link actually exists between exist between heath care disparity and race and ethnicity in Trinidad?
• What measures can be put in place to alleviate health care disparities between racial and ethnic groups in the Trinidad?
• How do ethnic and racial disparity levels affect healthcare quality in the Trinidad?
4. The sources that we will be utilizing to provide background to our study are as follows:
• Addressing Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care: Using Federal Data to Support Local Programs to Eliminate Disparities by Thomas D. Sequist and Eric C. Schneider
• Assessing Race, Ethnicity and Gender in Health by Sana Loue

• Race, Ethnicity, and Depression in Canadian Society by Zheng Wu, Samuel Noh,Violet Kaspar and Christoph Shimmele

5. The annotated bibliography on the following page summarizes the main points from our journal and book sources that helped give background information on our research question and also accounts for their credibility and effectiveness....

...e and education can be related to racial and ethnic health variations while the second hypothesis looks at social support while the last hypothesis examines the relationship between economic background and mental health status. Through the discussion of sampling methods and illustrations of figures, that while there were trends, such as English and Jewish Canadians having poorer mental health status than persons who belonged to an Asian or African racial background, these factors cannot fully account for mental illnesses. This source proved its credibility as it was accessed from the Alma Jordan Library database and the authors’ credentials in the form of the universities they represent were stated. This article was extremely useful as it listed many possible factors that could account for disparities in ethnic and racial background and how they may affect illness.
