Propaganda is defined in the Encarta dictionary as “information put out only by an organization or government to promote a policy, idea or cause.” In other words making sure your side of the story is viewed as the correct one. Germany and Italy both widely used propaganda in the twentieth century in order to validate their policies and ensure their citizens supported government policies. This was accomplished through the use of art, music and literature.
The German leader, Adolf Hitler, was very astute in realizing the benefit of a propaganda campaign. Hitler placed so much value in propaganda that he chose Doctor Joseph Goebbels to be his Minister of Propaganda. One of Doctor Goebbels main tasks in his position were to ensure that no person within Germany would come in contact with any forms of media that would be considered either against the Nazi party or showed them in a bad light. Going along with this precept Goebbel was also tasked with making sure the policies of the Nazi party were promoted in the most convincing manner. In order to guarantee the success of these tasks, Goebbels established the Reich Chamber of Commerce in 1933. The function of this organization was to fully control all form of media within Germany. This included art, music, literature, radio and anything else they felt got across a point of view. They had such a stringent control over what was produced that in order to be published in Germany you would have had to have been a member of the Reich Chamber. Of course this led to a flux of propaganda within Germany (Trueman).

Words and images were silent weapons used by all governments involved during World War II. Wars are generally fought between soldiers, but the different ideologies often meet on the battlefield as well. The support of the people is crucial during these times since it general knowledge that strength relies on numbers. Propaganda targets people’s emotions and feelings and changes people’s perception about a particular idea, people or situation. Propaganda goes hand in hand with the art of persuasion and convincing; these tools can control and manipulate the collective minds of massive amount of its audience. During World War II, for instance, the elements of war were taken from the location of the military fights and brought to the households of millions of families. Advertising has the power to sell ideas, to give or take away hope, and to boosts people´s morale; the ideas that were presented to the public through propaganda are immortal, they linger in the nation’s memory. Images often displayed in posters and pamphlets during war time, were an essential factor to gain peoples support and trust, images attract people’s attention with more efficiency than word. It is an effective mean to attract attention; it I said that images speak louder than words and this case is not the exception. Media, during World War II, was the catalyst which increased the magnitude of the issue that was being confronted. This event left a mark in our history since its objective was to generate hatred between ethnics. Propaganda was the second most powerful means of getting support within Germany, but it was most effective in getting foreigners to stand bye idly while the Nazi's committed their crimes against the Jews and other minorities. Germany received respect from the foreign press for its efficiency in the Olympics, which was a precursor to the `efficiency' they showed in slaughtering millions of innocent captives in concentration camps. Yet the Nazi's, lead by their charismatic leader, were able to pass their laws in a legitimate fashion, and persuade the world to look the other way. The world stood by in fear and awe, hoping the storm would just blow over, but by September 1939 Hitler and the Nazi's had progressed too far, and there was no stopping them from undertaking in what would be the most lethal war in the history of the world.
Introductory Paragraph: Propaganda is a tool of influence that Adolph Hitler used to abuse the German population by brainwashing them and completely deteriorating an entire race. How does one person get the beliefs of an entire country? Hitler put Joseph Goebbels in charge of the propaganda movement. Goebbels controlled every element of propaganda, there were many varieties of Nazi Propaganda. Propaganda was also being used as a tool to gain the support of the German population for the war, and supporting their government. The Jew’s were the targeted race and were completely pulverized by the Nazi’s. Hitler not only tried to destroy an entire race, he gained complete control of an entire country.

By looking at In the Garden of Beasts we can see that Hitler and the Nazi Regime successfully used propaganda and deception to gain power in Germany. This is important because propaganda is widely used to manipulate others into supporting one’s ideas while deceiving them from the truth.

“By the skillful and sustained use of propaganda, one can make a people see heaven as hell or an extremely wretched life as paradise,” Adolf Hitler once declared. In the lexicon, propaganda means “information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement...” (Dictionary.com). During World War 2, most of the countries exhibited some form of it because as Hitler explained, it could easily influence people, and they used it as a weapon of war. However, although propaganda in the Second World War was beneficial, it wasn’t a morally correct way to gain support from people for their countries.
Propaganda was used by the government as a Mean to accomplish all their major objectives during the war. Propaganda played a very significant part in winning over the citizens of the Unites States of America in the First World War. This propaganda helped gain support for the war, and also created a high morale of the people. Although this is the definition of propaganda, the real question is how valuable really was this propaganda in influencing the views of Americans? The answer is very useful, and looking at propaganda used throughout this major world war you’ll notice its value.
In this last essay I will talk about why there was little opposition in Germany towards the Nazi regime and was it the use of propaganda. Also I will say if I agree with this statement or disagree. In the next paragraphs I will talk about, Propaganda, censorship, Terror and popularity.
Propaganda works by adducing a standpoint of an intimation and then that standpoint makes the public want to imperforate the intimation. When Hitler aggrandized to power in 1933 he established a Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda. A common leitmotif encompassed of German propaganda was that whenever they were about to pass a section of legislation that is pernicious to the Jews their propaganda would turn violent. The Germans would have monochrome movies or films playing showing their army in victory. Even if they lost the battle, they would sometimes say they won it. The posters the party put up were usually demoralizing to the Jews, showing Hitler Youth, or showing Hitler usually with children. In the school in Germany they had multifold programs that would phase out other races, especially the Jews from activities. They also taught their doctrine of supernatural supremacy. The teachers were even instructed to demoralize the Jews. Due to Nazi propaganda other races were severely punished all because of one man’s influence.
Joseph Goebbels who becomes the Nazis master propagandist established the Reich chamber of culture. This organization was established to deal with all aspects of culture. As the heads of ministry of the public enlightenment and propaganda he controlled the flow of the public information through the press, radio, and film. The Nazis are infamous for their heavy use of propaganda during their reign in the Third Reich, they used many means of propaganda such as posters, cartoons, radio, film, etc. The German citizens’ constant exposure to all of this propaganda from all directions had a deep psychological and psychoanalytical impact on them, it redefined their identity and who they were as well as what they thought of the world around them. Nazi propaganda often had deep symbolic meaning usually associated with anti-semitism and German nationalism, these elements were already present in the minds of the majority of Germans so it wasn’t hard for Adolf Hitler and the rest of the Nazi party to further provoke and enrage the emotions of people concerning these things, they merely had to tap into these pre disposed emotions in a way that would have the most favourable psychological impact for the Nazis. Some of the opinions and mindsets that German citizens had may have been there even before the Nazis came into power and made it seemed like they were brainwashing people with their propaganda, but with what justification can it be said that Nazi propaganda had a psychological and psychoanalytic impact on the German population to a great extent, rather than it being the work of pre set psychological states of mind of people due to the Treaty of Versailles, the Great Depression, Hyperinflation, and other sources which may have led the German population to support and hold anti-semitistic and nationalistic ideologies.
The domination of the mass media by Josef Goebbels and the Nazi regime corrupted the German ideals through the spread of misinformation. Goebbels was appointed the Minister for Propaganda and Public Enlightenment in 1933 after Hitler’s rise to Chancellor and was responsible for all propaganda spread throughout Germany. The Reich Chamber of Commerce was set up, again in 1933, and was Goebbels first act to centralise and control Germany’s media. The majority of media in Germany was privately owned and it was decreed that all individuals and enterprises involved in media had to join in order to publish work. Nazi party members were allowed membership whilst all Jews, Communists and Socialists were denied; this brought forth the majority rule, effectively preventing minorities from representing their views in the media whilst removing their issues away from the public eye. As Hitler stated “by the skilful and sustained use of propaganda, one can make a people see…an extremely wretched life as paradise”. By preventing the public from hearing their views and by presenting ‘undesirable’ people negatively, Goebbels managed to dehumanise Nazi enemies and through this separation allowed Germany’s people to believe that their wretched life could really be a heaven.
Hitler and the Nazis had two main propaganda tasks. First, they hoped to ensure that none of the media or news presented in Germany contained anything hostile or damaging to the Nazi Party. Second, they planned to gradually gain the support of the German public in their ideas of anti-Semitism and genetic superiority (Herf).
