All throughout America the homeless wander aimlessly looking for a way out, a way back to being treated as people, a way back to their old lives. These are people who have great potential, Many of which had jobs, family, and money. But then something caused that to disappear, and now they need our help. The problem the homeless face is not that they don 't have the incentive and motivation to go and retrieve themselves; it 's the lack of help from the communities they live in. Too often the homeless are left on the side of the freeway holding signs begging for money, with no answer. We live in a world where the homeless can’t get jobs because employers won 't hire them; employers choose not to hire the homeless because a majority of them have …show more content…
Employers may be reluctant to hire the homeless due to their bad reputation. Barbers may not want to work for free. Restaurants may not have the time to donate their wasted food. These are the problems the homeless face, a lack of help. People often choose to ignore the homeless because it has nothing to do with their personal lives. However, it could be the biggest impact. Take for example a small business who can not offer many benefits or high salary but needs employees. The business would normally fall short and close down. Most homeless people would jump at the opportunity to work, no matter the salary. If the small business would have put aside their differences and hired them, they could stay afloat while helping the homeless get back on their feet. The Helping Holiday festival will make the lives of all homeless better one way or another. Whether they are to get hired or not, the festival serves as a way to bring the community together. Although The festival was created to get the homeless employed it gives them back their humanity. Having barbers come out and give them haircuts; giving them a nice hot shower; filling their stomachs for the first time in months. That, that is what makes the brings the community together to help the
Annotated Bibliography: “Homelessness and the selfish society”. “Homelessness, Citizenship, and Identity : The Uncanniness of Late Modernity” Arnold, Kathleen R. 2004 Kathleen’s book brings up many detailed facts about how homelessness is a never-ending situation due to mental illness, poverty, social structure and political parties. Most individuals would suggest creating a homeless shelter, but that solution is unrealistic due to budgets, and the lack of funds from the community and Calvary Chapel. The cost of these solutions is reasonable and within reach. The solution will provide jobs and offer a sense of self-esteem most homeless have lost. The homeless as well as the community will thrive from this program and lives will be changed. Individuals, who were stuck on the street cold and alone, will be given the opportunity to go out and make a change in their lives. Although, many might suggest that many homeless are ex drug addicts or alcoholics, there are many who do not have the financial stability to survive and live a life of normality but will do what it takes to change their situation. Hess suggests that, “What many people need is an opportunity to get back on their feet and develop their own income” (Feuer, 2012, para.15). My solution offers this opportunity and by implementing it, homeless will have the power to change their
Youth become homeless for a number of reasons including: family violence and neglect, rejection due to sexual orientation or gender identity, the overwhelmed child welfare system and extreme poverty. These youth almost always have experienced unimaginable abuse and trauma, in their homes, their communities, and on the street. It is the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act (RHYA)-funded services and programs that help to rectify the deep injustices that homeless youth experience on a daily basis.
In America, society views the homeless as a crutch on the economy. Upper classes alienate the homeless population in order to excel the economy and lessen the burden on society. People who appear to be homeless are ultimately pushed aside and are treated differently. Often avoided, the general populous turns away from the problem that is effecting major cities throughout America. Ignoring a problem that is persistent, is being ignorant towa...
Homelessness is a vast predicament in America and around the world. It is severely overlooked as people don’t really think of homelessness as real world problem. However, there have been ways that people have tried to fix the problem. They have come up with homeless shelters, emergency shelters, food banks and soup kitchens. These solutions have limitations though, which will hopefully come to an end.
The first reason why peoples became homeless is that people lost their jobs, their homes are destroying from tornados, and mudslide and other young teenagers like to run away from home because of alcohols and addiction to drugs. Second, is they are family became mental illness and could not afford the health care. People should respect and show courtesy to homeless. However, people need to get better acquainted with each other to see inside a person is similar to when people open their book or their heart. The homeless people could get help to treat their addictive to alcohols and drugs. As technology advances and more countries join the developed world, we here in America have a forgotten population. Here in America, a land of great wealth and opportunity, we have a neglected homeless population. In a land so rich it is hard to believe that over half-a-million people are left homeless, leaving hundreds of thousands on the street. (National Alliance) New York City has been upsetting the national trend of a decreasing homeless population. (Facts about Homelessness) Many people find it easier to look the other way rather than take on such a monumental problem. Disregarding this problem will not make it go away, and will even exacerbate the problem. Homelessness did not happen overnight, nor will it go away overnight, but change is possible. The systemic reasons for homelessness have changed over time, creating the need for community groups and governments to tackle homelessness in different ways. Until we have a concrete plan for solving homelessness the problem will persist.
Homelessness is a major issue in our world today. There is an abundant amount of people who live on the street and barely have anything they can call their own. These people probably lived great lives at some point, they probably never thought of the concept of becoming homeless until it happened. Luckily there is help being brought to them from different kinds of sources in order to help get them back on the road to a happy and fulfilled life. Certain people in society have a desire to get homeless people off the streets, to get them food, clothing, and most importantly love. These people are volunteers who enjoy spending their free time helping the ones in need because they love to give back to their community . There is major volunteer groups out there like StandUp For Kids, this organization helps to improve lives of the homeless and street kids. Homelessness is a big problem in the United States and we the citizens are not doing enough about it. You can’t go anywhere in a large city without seeing a box where a homeless person calls home, or just seeing a person in need holding up a sign. There are millions of people that are homeless in the world that won’t ever have the opportunity to speak to their loved ones again. You never really understand what someone is going through or how they got homeless. In this article it shows a group of people helping homeless people locate their long lost love ones http://www.npr.org/2016/10/16/498074856/harnessing-social-media-to-reconnect-homeless-people-with-their-families. People should really think to themselves what if this happened to my father or my brother, and never got to speak to them again. There are many contributions we can make to help that
One of the main things that homeless people struggle with is trying to figure out what and when their next meal will be. They struggle with personal hygiene, they have nowhere to shower, shave or take care of themselves (Peacefrog). Personal security is another big struggle (Peacefrog). They must figure out where they are safe, where they can sleep without getting arrested or beat up. In many cities there are laws against sleeping in public places, and little protection for the homeless, being outside all of the time increases the risk of a homeless person suffering from violence or abuse (Peacefrog). Often, homeless people are not seen as suitable for jobs. The homeless are often rejected and discriminated against
Homeless individuals are known for taking hand outs and they prefer to plead for money rather than to go work for it. People assume most of the the money that is given to homeless people they spend it on drugs and alcohol because of the fact that many homeless people have drug and alcohol addictions. It is not uncommon to come across homeless youth and older homeless population that are known to abuse substances like drugs and alcohol. Because of the fact that homeless people have substance abuse problems, they tend face illnesses and infections. Many hard working Americans ask themselves “why don’t homeless people just get jobs?” The assumption is they are just lazy and unmotivated. Homeless people choose to live the life they live. Everyone goes through problems but not all people take the path homeless people do. The problems homeless people face is not an excuse for them to be helped and maintained by other hard working people. Although homelessness might be a choice to some, no one knows the hardships these people have gone through. Some assume these people are just lazy but in reality a lot of these homeless people have jobs of their own, they just can’t afford housing and a decent life. Everyone has their own opinion on homeless people, but that does not change the fact that one should still serve the homeless. Not because homeless people need help but because we are
The police face many different issues while out on patrol every day. One issue is that of the homeless. In many cities, homelessness has been criminalized, but we, as a society, have to question if this is the right thing to do. Should people who have the misfortune of being homeless be punished further?
The population of Los Angeles continues to grow each day because people perceive that the opportunities will improve their economic and social well-being. Most of them get good jobs manufacturing, business and the government giving them the ability to provide for themselves and their children. Those who are not lucky enough do not realise their goals and depend on the government and the society for basic needs. The effort of the city and the government to house the homeless cannot take the pressure of the rising number of the homeless without the support of the society. Los Angeles in the United State’s largest urban and has the highest number of homeless people making the task of housing its population next to impossible without participation
On a normal of our everyday life, we find ourselves going to work or heading somewhere to meet up with a friend. While on the way there we pass someone that we don’t know sitting down on the ground alongside with him is a cart from a store filled with old clothes that either found or got from someone, some trash, maybe something small to eat to help with his hungry stomach growling throughout the day. You wonder how he got themselves into a position like that? Yet sometimes we know how he got there, although, we don’t always know someone else’s story. You leave some money by his foot to help get himself somewhere for a short time. Homelessness has increased over the years, from 1990s up until now. I believe that we can help these get back into a better environment for their life with the help of local shelters, food banks, donations from churches and schools, and many more things we can do in Licking County.
I would like to start by saying how I see it and define it in my own words. It is the state where an individual doesn’t have a normal house and are not financially stable in life. It is the situation where you have to look after yourself or another person that is also homeless. You won’t be able to find the proper housing like a normal and secured place to live. All day and all night, you will be trying to sustain yourself from everyday challenges, like looking for food to eat, a place to live, and proper clothing.
