Introduction to Psychology Why kids kill parents BY Kathleen M. Heide Psychology Today Magazine HOW A LEGACY OF CHILD ABUSE LEADS TO HOMICIDE I chose this article because I have always been astonished at how children can do this to their parents and what drove them to the choices they made. Did they have any other choices or did they use all of their chooses up that they had? This article supplied a lot of answers to me. According to this Article: Between 1977 and 1986, more than 300 parents were killed each year by their own children. &nb... ... middle of paper ... ...ot his father once, he was then afraid his father would be okay and come after him again when he was well, so he shot him again to make sure his father would not be able to do that. To end with a quote from the article; " The true killer in these cases is child mistreatment." "Damage comes not only in human carnage but in the death of the human spirit that persistent abuse often carries out."
In my opinion, parents are the result of a young person’s actions. Parents or caregivers have the biggest influence in their children's lives. I think that the way you raise your children will reflect who they become and their morals. Growing up, a child learns by copying what their parents do for example for me, I got the habit of biting my nails from my mother. Cooking, cleaning, driving, are taught to us by our parents, therefore; children learn to carry on those skills they learn and use them in the future.
There is a broad spectrum of crimes that are committed day to day. When one thinks of murder, parental murder against children is not at the forefront of the mind. Filicide, or the murder of one’s child, is a crime that is common but not mentioned often. About 500 filicide cases happen each year, which has been close to the same number for about a decade (Orenstein, Brown University, 2014). Also according to studies, boys were 58.3 percent more likely to be killed than girls. Looking at statistics from the National Institute of Health, as of 2004 in the US, 311 of 578 (53.8%) children under the age of five were murdered by their parents. From 1976 to 2004, maternal filicide accounted for 30 percent of all children under the age of five while

According to a study by Dr. Suzanne Lego crime has decreased in the past 10 years in all but one area, youth violence. Dr. Lego states that a study conducted by Dr. Joyce Brothers reveals that when a gun in placed on a table in a room where children are playing, and with no one making physical contact with the gun, aggressiveness increases in the level of play. According to Dr. Lego, the same behavior was expressed when a television was tuned to a violent, action packed program (Lego).
Since the beginning of our nation’s history, child abuse has made an impact of great measures. Many kids have become victims of abandonment, physical or sexual abuse, sex trade working, or criminals by default in order to survive. Though the cause and effect of child abuse can vary, it is a common problem within families. Today countless stories are documented of kids being abused by loved ones, in government programs, by caregivers and in other places deemed safe for children. However, because child abuse is a reoccurring factor in the history of America, the government is currently passing laws that enforce stricter punishment to individuals that cause maltreatment.
The effects of this experience, although unethical in its approach to conduct experiment without knowledge to the parents it does not rise to the level of harm. It can, however, be argued that it has had an effect on them emotionally and perhaps they may experience further complications, but far greater atrocities have occurred in the name of science and in this particular case, no credible data ever developed from this experiment due to it being
In conclusion, Child abuse and neglect is more common in children’s lives today. A child may be harmed and be right in front of us and we do not even know it. We have to watch out for the signs and symptoms to try and help a child out. We may not even realize it till it is too late. The effect can appear in all aspects of life, rather it being psychological or behavioral. These effects can range from anything such as minor physical injury, not getting along with others, or become aggressive and affect them later on in life.
Since the 'Jack the Ripper' murders of 1888 in Whitechapel, London, the incidence of serial killers had increased at a steady rate. Names such as Charles Manson, John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy and Myra Hindley strike fear and horror into the hearts of normal people who cannot comprehend the subhuman actions of such violent people. Arguments still continue as to what drives these people to kill. Many believe that bad parenting and traumatic childhood experiences are a major factor in creating a serial killer, while others believe they are simply born evil, and that no amount of either good or bad parenting can change their basic personality.

The legal system in the United States doesn’t have a lot of gray areas when it comes to murder cases, usually someone’s going to jail at the end of the day. However there are certain cases involving children where the law needs to be viewed with exceptions. Sometimes the laws need to bring new ideas and concepts into consideration that weren’t thought of when the laws were originally written. For instance in most cases when an adult kills another adult, the adult who killed the other person will be convicted and sent to prison. But in the cases of when a young child kills another person the law cannot be too quick to convict them due to many discoveries in the field of childhood development. A young child ages 2-6 is still developing biologically,

My parents raised me to be independent, which I can say that I am. I learned that I cannot always rely on other people and that I need to do things for myself, I control my own destiny. If I needed or wanted something done, then I would have to do it myself. I got a job in order to take my financial independence from my parents, one step further. At the same time, I was learning responsibility.
