Veterinary medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with the diseases of animals. Treating pets is one of the most profitable fields in veterinary medicine. The proper vaccination of animals and the diagnosis of diseases are part of a veterinarian’s duties.

I strive to be a veterinarian because I love animals and I enjoy taking care of them. Ever since the beginning of the human race there has been veterinary medicine. Agriculture and the domestication of animals began around 3000 B.C. However, there aren’t many records on the failures and successes of the early veterinarians. The early Egyptian, Babylonian, and Hindu civilizations were the first to leave some records of veterinarian medicine. We didn’t first get veterinary hospitals until about 250 B.C. In 1862 the Department of Agriculture (USDA) was created. However, the American Veterinary Medical Association wasn’t found until 1863 after many unsuccessful attempts at organization. “In 1884, another milestone was passed with enactment of the Hatch Act, creating the Bureau of Animal Industry within the Department of Agriculture (Swope 19).” In the last 25 years veterinary medicine has assumed a leading role in the advancement of many researches. Some of them are the advancement of research in the medical use of atomic energy, in diseases common to humans and animals, etc.

Just as a Doctor is to a human, a veterinarian is to an animal. Only animals cannot talk so a veterinarian must be able to observe normal and abnormal animal behaviors. In one way or another, I have been taking care of animals my entire life. Growing up, I was completely dedicated to animals, caring for what could be considered a mini zoo. Naturally, as a child, I was set on a career as a veterinarian. Like most children, I was naive about the veterinary profession, but I had plenty of people to warn me about its challenges. Albeit initially discouraged from becoming a veterinarian, my search for a meaningful career not only revived my spark for veterinary medicine but also gave me the maturity and experience necessary to succeed in it.
For as long as I can remember, my childhood dream has always been wanting to become a veterinarian. While other kids were outside having fun at the playground, I was at the library reading books and learning about the different animals. However, as I matured, I realized that being a veterinarian isn’t just about caring for and assisting injured animals.
