We all know that the daily commute can be very long and frustrating. Traffic can often cause long delays. These delays cause stress to you, your boss and the coworkers that have to cover for you until you make it into the office. Today there is a new highway that everyone can use to get to work. The delays on this highway are measured in microseconds rather than hours. It is the Information Superhighway. The Information Superhighway has the ability to connect together every computer in every part of the world. This kind of access allows individuals to do research, marketing, communications, sales and a wide range of other tasks normally completed at the office, from the comfort and convenience of their own home. This was the basic principle that started a new trend in business known as telecommuting. This paper will give you the information you need to have a good understanding of what telecommuting is and why it is becoming so popular. In addition, it will discuss how businesses design telecommuting jobs, how they work and how they are managed.
Telecommuting involves letting employees of a company complete part of if not all of their daily work in the convenience of their own home. In some cases this may involve connecting to the companies computer network through the Internet via modem. In other cases it may just mean they complete work at home and then send the completed work back to the office through the mail or by delivering it themselves. Although many people bring work from the office home with them at night to complete before the next day they are not necessarily considered telecommuters. A schoolteacher, for instance, brings students papers home to grade. She then takes them back to school the next day. This does not make her a telecommuter for the simple reason that her compensation is based on the time she spends at school not at home. “Telecommuting occurs whenever an employee is paid for work done at an alternate worksite and total commuting time is thereby reduced” (Mariani, 2000).
While being able to enjoy the comfort of your own home and still collect a paycheck may seem like a good reason, that is not what started the idea of telecommuting. State and federal government first began the research and promotions of telecommuting to help minimize traffic congestion, cut operating cost, and help protect the environment (Hawkins, 2001). 1) When considering the business environments, I believe the technological environment to have the greatest impact on most businesses today. Modern communication tools allow for constant connectivity of employees, able to further enhance their productivity and availability. We’ve already seen shifts due to technological advances in the unemployment rate as “workers are so productive that fewer are needed” (Nickels, 14). These advances will continue to push businesses to adapt and will cause further shifts in the types of jobs available to modern society as well as how companies will hire. As our text notes “in the years since the recession of 2007-2009, freelancers have become more important to the business world than ever before” (Nickels,
Despite an employee’s heart felting requests to work remotely from home (telework environment), many government supervisors continue to resist allowing employees to telework. Many working adults/employees seek ways for a better quality of life. Work life integration involves juggling long work hours, minimizing commute time to the workplace, obtaining career positions with competitive wages, maintaining quality time with family, participating to social and network events, giving their time to community services, and some may return to school for a higher education or additional degree. As employees’ seek ways to deal with additional life stress and learn how to manage the stressors in their life. Stress is threatening and damaging if not managed appropriately. Although stress
Teamwork has become increasingly important as workers no longer focus on just getting their own tasks or the specific tasks of their department done but with working together with their teammates and other departments in achieving corporate goals. As the textbook states, while interactions occur between a manager and their subordinate, interactions occur between a manager and other teams and groups (Landy & Conte, 2013, p. 502). Telecommuting is a way to offer a work-life balance while keeping key people. However, the leader is challenged with keeping track of these employees in regard to monitoring what they are doing and communicating with them (Landy & Conte, 2013, p. 502). Telecommuting is difficult as the manager has difficulty building a relationship with these employees as well as balancing how to keep them engaged in what is going on in the company. They should be in the office periodically in order to keep grounded with the company. Temporary workers are a way of filling a void when additional resources are needed. Temporary resources are used when a company has fluctuating production needs. The challenge is that they may not have the same level of commitment to or have the same values as employees that are full time (Landy & Conte, 2013, p. 504).
Telecommunications gained mainstream attention in the early 90’s; however the initial key market was business men and women, who used their phones whilst being on the move and so allowing them to communicate with their companies with ease. Though in the modern era, telecommunication went through segmentation in the market trends, and now in this day and age it would be difficult to find someone who does not own some form of mobile technology. Many phone providers battle to provide the best service for their customers (Figure 1).
Throughout the United States there are over eleven million people working at home at least part-time. In cities such as New York, federal legislation put into effect required a decrease in the amount to commuters that drive the city's streets during rush hour. Forced to make changes, Merrill Lynch decided to give the telecommuting program a try. Merrill Lynch started a program where potential telecommuters working at the firm, go through an extensive training course by taking a two-week stint in a simulation lab where they are isolated from co-workers and managers just as they would at home. Some people find it more productive while others realize that telecommuting is not for them. Most telecommuters will find the job comfortable if they themselves are self-motivated and focused.

One of the main driving factors for any company is economics and how will telecommuting allow the corporation to be profitable. The primary saving for companies embarking upon the telecommuting concept is the reduction in the amount of office space required to conduct business. Telecommuting benefits the employer because they have an expanded pool of employees. The skills of employees with commuting difficulties, childcare conflict, disabilities, geographical barriers are made available to a telecommuting employer. Companies are now starting to expanding oversees where the labor price is cheaper for telecommuting. This however can be looked at as both an advantage to the employer, and as a disadvantage to the employee.
During the past decade, the internet has revolutionized and changed the way organizations do business by offering rapid communication systems and enhanced information access and innovation of technological advancements have created a brave new workplace. Further, the internet enables organizations to decrease expenses, reduce product life cycle time, market goods and services more efficiently (Anandarajan et al, 2000). However, with these kinds of benefits, the internet provides employees with a technique
Job Redesign, which affects companies and workers more positively than negatively, composes of Job Rotation, Job Enlargement, Job Enrichment, Flextime, Job Sharing, and Telecommuting. rganizing these components well, companies can get multiple benefits, such as increasing employees’ motivation and satisfaction, reducing absenteeism and turnover costs, and expanding productivities. The textbook Organization Behavior says that Job Rotation, is that “The periodic shifting of an employee from one task to another”(215). Consequently, employees can escape from boredom and also increases motivation. Job Enlargement defines that “Increasing the number and variety of tasks that an individual performances result in jobs with more diversity”(217). For example, housekeepers in some small hotels manage various tasks, like cleaning bathroom, making beds, and preparing meals. These works helps to increase their responsibility and duties. Job Enrichment is that “…increasing the degree to which the worker controls the planning, execution, and evaluation of his or her work”(217). Flextime is flexible work hours. Employees can schedule their work hours, in which they are more productive. In addition, it has some degree of freedom that they can freely come to work and leave. Job sharing is that “An agreement that allows two or more individuals to spilt [their work hours]”(219). It allows workers to have good balances between works and family responsibilities. As a result, employees can satisfy their work and life. Furthermore, their satisfactions increase companies’ productivity. Telecommuting allows employees to work at home at least two days a week through a computer (219). It gives employees flexibility and also it affects toward companies in a good way, like decreasing office-space costs.
The recent revolution of internet and dot-com boom has brought more people familiar to computers and the Internet. It seems like that we can hardly find our way through everyday life with out using or having an internet connected computer next to us. The way we think, live, and communicate was changed once for all with the invention of networked communication of computers. Computers are no longer a piece of machine that sits on top of our desk for us to admire the marvelous technology brought by the geeks and freaks of 80's, but for us to constantly use and put in to work. And in a way, environment which we live in, the society, schools, jobs, forces us to make friends with that technology. Just like when you don't have a telephone you will have hard time communicate with meeting with your friends, absence of instant messaging programs, or ability to use one, will place you out of the circle of events happening with the friends, or don't let you do the work as fast or as good as the one who uses the technology. This is one of the reasons why increasing number of people choose to have computers and internet as a prime communication tool not only between friends and for socialization, but for everyday life. People are increasingly finding new ways of getting things done not by the waiting at the other end of the phone line, but clicking the way through a certain web pages, or typing their message on emails and messenger program. On-line part of the business of almost all industries, not only limited to the dot-com companies but other 'traditional' businesses as well, has been increasingly finding it self positioning more valuable and growing in potential. We are all too familiar with the online shopping sites and class websites that we use almost everyday in a very handy way of getting things done.
But in the use of the term “technology” today, there is far more associated meaning than automobiles or washing machines. It has ushered in an entirely new way of working, and in increasing numbers of organizations, increased options of just where work associated with a particular job will be done. More employees than ever have the option of working at home yet still being employed either full...

Advances in technology have changed businesses dramatically, in particular the communication and information technology that are conducted in firms, which changed the appearance and pace of businesses over the past few decades. ICT in particular, has evolved a lot over the past 30 years; important information can be stored in computers rather than being in drawers enabling information to be transferred at a greater volume and speed (Guy, 2009). ICT has also expanded various forms of telecommunications and workload conducted in businesses, internet examples of this include: e-mails can be used to communicate with others...
The advantages of telecommuting and having a virtual office are the ability to work from your own home. There is no travel time to the office which will save you in gas and wear and tear on your car. The office space in your home can be a tax write off. With a virtual office you set your own hours and work for yourself. The disadvantages would be that you do not have physical interaction with your coworkers when you are telecommuting. You may miss out on some things that occur in the office if people forget to pass on the information to you. You may also have to pay for your own workspace equipment. If you have a virtual office you may have periods of little to no work as it is not a guaranteed paycheck.
