Alice Walker makes a great argument against smoking in her short essay, “My Daughter Smokes”, by sharing with the reader a personal experience that she had concerning cigarette smoking. She describes what happened to her father because he was a smoker for most of his life. Walker talks about what happened to his appearance and his health because of smoking. She also makes a point in showing how society and Hollywood make smoking out to be attractive. Walker wrote this essay against smoking for one purpose, to try to get her daughter to stop smoking so she wouldn’t have to go through what her grandfather did. I agree with Walker’s argument against smoking, there are no benefits to smoking; everything associated with smoking is harmful. While Walker does talk about a few of the health affects associated with smoking, she doesn’t go into much detail about them.
Smoking is a major killer in this country. It contributes to the premature deaths of up to two million Americans each year, and chronic diseases in millions more. Tobacco is both toxic and addictive. The nicotine in tobacco is five to ten times more addictive than cocaine and a thousand times more powerful than alcohol in altering the mood and behavior. It is classified as a euphoriant drug, because of its ability to alleviate anxiety and boredom. The tar in cigarettes destroys the sacs in the lung where air exchange takes place, and causes a build up of mucus. ...
Nicotine is an infamous chemical substance that is often found in tobacco. Tobacco contains several hundred chemical compounds and has been known to cause many dangerous health issues, primarily to the respiratory system, such as coughing, asthma, and in many cases, lung cancer. However, it is not nicotine itself that causes these health issues, but rather, it is other chemicals, mainly tar, that lead to damage in the respiratory system. That is not to say that nicotine is harmless. On the contrary, nicotine is a stimulant and it is the major cause of why tobacco is so addicting (Benowitz, 2008). An advocate for this claim, could argue that nicotine is more dangerous than tobacco itself due to the addiction that it can cause. This point of
Walking the streets of Baltimore, the smell of cigarettes was everywhere. I sat at the bus stop and this homeless guy was asking for change while smoking a cigarette. I looked at him and didn’t feel any remorse because he was smoking. I imagined giving him money I had then he will spend it on cigarettes and that will be a waste of my money. I got up and moves about ten feet away from the second hand smoke but then saw a guy selling cigarettes. He has a pack of cigarettes and he is selling two cigarettes for a dollar. After about 10 munities waiting for the bus, I saw the homeless guy going to the guy who was selling cigarettes and bought two cigarettes. I looked at the homeless guy’s face and he was so happy. I
It is a nagging voice behind every smoker’s head. It tempts every user that tries to quit into using it “one more time” before giving it up. With the chemical formula of C10H14N2, this alkaloid is better known as nicotine. Being the major chemical in tobacco, nicotine is the reason that users often get addicted to tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars and snuff. It is also because of this addiction that would indirectly causes over 400,000 deaths annually in the United States while costing almost $200 billion in the health sector; making it the most preventable cause of death (Center for Disease Control and Prevention 2010). The question then remains is: What can be done to amend this problem? Although currently there are public health policies are designed to curb tobacco use, such as levying taxes on tobacco products has been effective in deterring new smokers, it is less effective amongst existing tobacco users (CDC 2009). Therefore, a different approach is needed in order to construct a policy that would apply broadly to everyone; and to do this, one must examine the biological and social factors that are involved in nicotine addiction.
Every year cigarette smoking is responsible for 500,000 premature deaths (Nugel), you do not want to be just another statistic, do you? America’s first cash crop was tobacco. That means that tobacco has been around for a really long time. It was not until 1865, though, that cigarettes were sold commercially. They were sold to soldiers at the end of the Civil War (Dowshen). From then, cigarettes spread like wildfire, and it was not until 1964 that anyone made a stand about the negative effects of tobacco and cigarettes. People start smoking for all different reasons, some to fit in and some to “escape”. Regardless, it is a horrible habit. 3900 children will try their first cigarette today. Amongst adults who currently smoke, 68% of them began at age 18 or younger, and 85% at 21 or younger (American Lung Association). And of all those people, 70% say if they were given another chance they would never have picked up that first cigarette (Tobacco Free Maine). Smoking is responsible for 1 and 5 deaths in the united states, and is the number one preventable cause of death (NLH). Smoking burns and there is no doubt about that, but before one picks up that cigarette, understand the negative effects on not only oneself, but others affected by ones poor choices, like second-hand smoke. Because of smoking cigarettes, many types of cancer, decrease of life quality, and negative health effects have become all too common in the world today.
Cigarette smoking stay the top preventable cause of sickness and early death in the United States because not only it asserts over 400,000 lives a year but it enhances the danger of someone dying from illnesses such as heart disease, stroke emphysema and a diversity of cancers (Douglas E.Jorenby) . Despite information about the bad side effects of smoking on health, 25% of adults in the United States keep on smoking. One of the reason why people seems to not easily quit smoking and continue to do it has to do with the addictive nicotine, a substance found in all types of tobacco products.
Smoking cigarettes is a detrimental practice not only to the smoker, but also to everyone around the smoker. According to an article from the American Lung Association, “Health Effects” (n.d.), “Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., causing over 438,000 deaths per year”. The umbrella term for tobacco use includes the use of cigarettes, cigars, e-cigs and chewing tobacco. While tobacco causes adverse health consequences, it also has been a unifying factor for change in public health. While the tobacco industries targets specific populations, public health specifically targets smokers, possible smokers, and the public to influence cessation, policies and education.
In America, the most common cause of avoidable disease, illness, and death is the abuse of tobacco(). Tobacco is a plant that carries a highly addictive substance known as nicotine that creates smokers to be unable to stop the habit. Numerous chemicals within tobacco like carbon monoxide, tar and formaldehyde are all believed to be harmful to the human body and cause superb health issues (abovetheinfluence). Smoking tobacco can have extreme negative effects on physical appearance, body organs and systems and the people that surround the smoker because of the dangerous chemicals it consists of.
Nicotine is highly addictive. Most smokers have a very hard time quitting because they are addicted to nicotine. It is a very fast acting drug, and it can reach your brain in as little as 15 seconds.{Nordqvist, Christian. "Why Is Smoking Bad for You."} . If tobacco products did not have a nasty, addictive “drug,” the
“Smoking kills, if you are killed you have lost a very important part of your life.” (Brooke Shleds). Smoking is very huge problem in our society. It is not just affect people’s live, but also affect their family and health. So people have to stop smoking which can help smokers to avoid many of diseases and stop affect who around them like their children. In fact, when children become aware of cigarettes, they are likely to start smoking at an early age.. And nicotine is lead addictive drug (Andrew Bridges and Janet Raloff).
Everyone knows that smoking is bad, yet they still continue to do it. Consumers smoke for various reasons. Some smoke because they are stressed, unfulfilled, angry, and depressed. Smoking helps them to cope with their problems. The chemicals inside of smoking and its dependency are what make it bad. There are about 600 ingredients in a cigarette, and when it is ignited it creates more than 4,000 chemicals. There are about 70 chemicals that are poisonous. There is Acetone; which is used in nail polish, Ammonia, which is a household cleaner. A cigarette also holds Arsenic which is used in rat poison. The worst substance inside of cigarettes is Nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive substance and is what keeps most smokers coming back to smoke. Nicotine is present inside of the tobacco leaves inside of the cigarette and when ignited and inhaled, it comes into contact with the brain at around ten seconds. It is best that people not smoke; especially teens. People who start to smoke in their teens are more likely to become life-long smokers than those who have their first cigarette as adults. (Zickler, 2004)
One puff equals one life of misery: Smoking at first can seem harmless, but ones’ choice to experiment with cigarettes can turn into a costly habit, that is addictive and eventually, deadly. According to Factslides, “ Smoking a cigarette causes damage in minutes not years”. Every cigarette is filled with harmful chemicals that will leave someone with health problems and cancer, wishing that they hadn’t started smoking in the first place. Smoking is a problem among most adults and sadly, teenagers. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, and it is a disgusting habit. Cigarette smoking can have many negative effects: it can create health problems, financial problems, and hygiene problems. The main problem with smoking is that it can damage your health. According to Tobacco Fact File, “On average, each cigarette shortens your life anywhere from seven to eleven minutes. In other words, the time it takes you to smoke a cigarette equals the time that cigarette takes

Every year thousands of people die because of lung cancer or other tobacco related illness. Everyone in the world comes in contact with smoke from a cigarette at least once in their lifetime, whether it is at a restaurant or at work. Millions of people are addicted to smoking, and thousands more become addicted every year. Cigarettes and other tobacco products are everywhere. Most of the addicted smokers started when they were young (Roberts 18).
One person dies every six seconds due to a tobacco related disease, which results in a shocking amount of ten deaths per minute. Tobacco is one of the most heavily used addictive products in the United States. Tobacco contains over 4,000 chemicals; approximately 250 are dangerously harmful to humans. Smoking is a major public health problem. All smokers face an increased risk of lung cancer, cardiovascular problems and many other disorders. Smoking should be banned due to the many health risks to the user, second hand related smoke illness, and excessive cost.
In today’s generations most people know somebody that smokes cigarettes. Some of these smokers are coworkers, friends, family, or even themselves. Regardless of when they started smoking, it’s common knowledge that smoking is extremely harmful for the human body. According to the 2014 Surgeon General’s Report, “cigarette smoking has been linked to diseases of nearly all organs of the body.” Ironically most smokers fail to realize the gravity of the long term dangers they are exposing themselves to by smoking. Regardless of their choice, the long term uses of smoking cigarettes have been medically documented to cause lung damages, breathing issues, and heart complications.
