Saint Sernin of Toulouse and Notre Dame of Paris
When one thinks of St. Sernin and Notre Dame, one tends to think of two
beautiful cathedrals, not to churches that portray two totally different styles
of architecture. Those two styles are, of course, Romanesque in St. Sernin and
the Gothic style of Notre Dame. Some characteristics that these two buildings
share include quest for height, basic floor plan, and artistic flair. The
period of Romanesque architecture, which lasted roughly from 1050 A.D. to 1150
A.D., concentrated mainly on achieving massive proportions, rounded vaulted bays,
the round arch, the wall buttress, cylindrical apse and chapels, and towers.
Early Gothic architecture, which began in 1144 with the dedication of Saint
Denis, concentrated more on mastering the idea of an obscenely high ceiling, as
well as ribbed and pointed vaults, the relationship between the structure and
its appearance, and perhaps, most importantly the use of light.
One of the most enjoyable things about comparing the two structures of
St. Sernin and Notre Dame is that there are so many differences as far as the
particulars go, but in general the two cathedrals are very, very much alike.

to raise the ceiling to staggering new heights of over one hundred feet. The

The San Diego Mormon Temple bases its architecture on gothic roots; where the epitome of early gothic architecture is the Chartres Cathedral in France. The Mormon Temple is made of white aggregate stone and stucco, very angular and massive, built as a Gothic revival temple. Designed by William Lewis, Jr., the architect took into consideration Mormon temples in Salt Lake City and Washington, D.C. Hugely bulky at the base, the Mormon Temple rises from an enormous mound of earth, that conceals the lower floor. Built for the Mormons residing in Southern California, this temples marks the forty-fifth Mormon temple in the world. However, since its closing to the public in April 1993, only Mormons in "good standing" are now able to enter and use this massive structure. Situated in a suburban community of La Jolla/University City, the 59,000 square foot building is surrounded by shopping centers, residential areas and office buildings. There is no escaping the "angular, white monstrosity's" impact on the city. The gothic/space age temple capitalizes on an elevated sites that is close to the freeway, where thousands of motorists pass it daily.
Duc de Saint-Simon lived in the Palace of Versailles with King Louis XIV of France during the late seventeenth century. Louis did not move his court to Versailles until 1682, so it can be assumed that this document was written after. In his memoirs, he took detailed notes describing Louis’ attributes overwhelmingly positive, but seemingly accurate. This author creates a somewhat skewed look for the king of France with the immense positivity. Louis ruled with an absolute monarchy, Saint-Simon seems to be composing this to please the king and also for later to understand what life was truly like in the court and life at Versailles.
Dame Lyonet was first mentioned in the book, Le Morte Darthur, which has many tales about the Arthurian time. Dame Lyonet was mentioned in the tale of Sir Gareth of Orkney.
I think it is a well known fact that to compare any of UF's athletics to UCF's is pointless, considering UF is an athletic powerhouse, but I'll do it anyway.
Throughout the Lais of Marie de France there are several themes presented as central to the various stories. Some of these themes are present in all of the lais. One such example is that of courtly love and it’s implications. Courtly love being one of the more prominent themes in all of medieval literature, it is fittingly manifested in all of the lais as well. Another theme present in two of the lais is isolation. The theme of isolation plays a large role in the stories of Guigemar and Lanval. In each of these lais we see isolation as a factor in determining the fates of the central figures. Within each lai isolation is represented on several different occasions, each time having a direct impact on the outcome. These instances of isolation may be seen at times to be similar in nature and consequence, and different at other times. By sifting through both works these instances may be extrapolated and analyzed.
In 1241, King Louis IX was 27 years old, when he decided to build the Sainte Chapelle to house his great treasures – the relics of Christ. In the thirteenth century, the kingdom of France was a prosperous nation in wealth and power. The popular and well-known university, Notre dame was located in Paris that occupied over 200,000 students from many different cultures. “In 1237, the new Franc Emperor of the East, Baudoin II de Dourtenay, was faced by heavy expenses of a mainly military nature; he tried to meet these by selling the Relics of the Passion that were preserved in Byzantium and which he had already partly pledged to the Venetians” (Finance 4). In 1239, Louis bought from him the Holy Crown of Thorns, and two years later bought from him fragments of the True Cross and other relics connected to Christ. King Louis IX was a model for all Christian kings, and this reaffirmed his devotion to Christ, made his kingdom shine in western Christianity, and supported the empire of France. “It is probable that from this date onwards the king thought of building a monumental reliquary to house the precious relics in a dignified manner within the palace precincts, in a similar fashion of the Christian Emperors of the East” (Finance 5). The Sainte Chapelle sparkles like a rare jewel that has magnificent architecture and decoration; the stain glass windows seem to be inside of a jewel case. The many jewels seem to change color every hour with the sunlight rays bouncing back and forth. “The founder, King Louis IX, the future St. Louis, who had it built to house the Holy Relics of the Passion, today dispersed” (Finance 1). Throughout College Football's extensive 138 year history, there has been debate over which football team is the greatest dynasty. Many dynasties throughout the nation have the ability to be titled 'the greatest'. Nevertheless, the University of Notre Dame is undeniably the best overall College Football dynasty, when one considers not only statistics but also tradition, heart, and dedication. Notre Dame?s exceptional dynasty has many attributing factors throughout its history. These factors range from the greatest coaches and players to the contagious Irish spirit. No matter what ethnic background a Notre Dame man comes from, the minute he steps out onto 'Rockne's house'(Notre Dame Stadium), he automatically becomes one of the Fighting Irish. It is a telling act that throughout Notre Dame's history, and increasingly in recent years, many players, coaches, and fans have made the university their home purely because of their preference to be in the midst of a community of learning where belief is not merely tolerated, but in fact is celebrated.
Saint Gregory of Tours was born around the year 538 at Arverni, which is now Clermont-Ferrand. He belonged to the Gallo-Roman family, which was a very prestigious family. He was also related to the houses of Gaul. Gregory’s original name was Georgius Florentius. He took the name Gregory to honor his late grandfather who was named Gregory. His Grandfather was the Bishop of Langres. When Gregory was young, his father died and he went to live with his Uncle. His uncle, Gallus, was the Bishop of Clermont. Gallus educated him until his death in 554. Gregory’s mother left to live with friends in Burgandy and left her son to Avitus who became Bishop of Clermont after Gallus. Avitus taught Gregory all about the Scriptures. Gregory was not too impressed with the scriptures. Gregory got seriously ill and wasn’t supposed to recover. He did recover though and this made him more mindful of God and the scriptures. Gregory then became a friend with the Bishop of Tours whose name was Euphronius. Euphronius died in 573 and Gregory succeeded him as Bishop of Tours.
Saint Francis of Assis wasn’t a good young boy, but after the voice of God speaking to him, he changed, and his actions show. Saint Francis was a saint from Assis who was known to help the poor and animals. Saint Francis wasn’t a good boy in his youth, but after his calling from God, he changed for the good of all people. Many pray the Saint Francis, so that he may relieve their stress on the poor and sick.
While other colleges tend to focus on sports and extracurricular programs, Samford is a Christian university whose focus is on helping students to grow in their walk with Christ. Multiple opportunities exist to serve in churches and the surrounding community. Whether attending governor's school, or touring the graphic design department, I have felt at home on Samford's campus. I sense God's presence each time I visit and I want to be a part of the experience.
Late in the fifth century the son of a well-off family in Italy left for isolation on his mission to truly seek god. This man was St. Benedict, who is credited with the first establishment of the concept of withdrawing from all temptation for Christian beliefs in the west. St. Benedict left his home and went to the top of a mountain, where he established a monastic community. In this community the individuals who resided there, constantly reiterated their faith. They sacrificed whatever they may have had to prove their true commitment to God. This became an early ideal of Christianity, that one must suffer loss and sacrifice to prove their loyalty to the faith. It was believed in this time period that if one is content with only what they truly need one is freer to think about other people and to think about God . These individuals were called Regular Clergies (monks) and were considered heroes of the faith.
The best college football rivalries intrigue us to a point that we are on the edge of our seats for the entire game, but many people do not know exactly what makes these games so unique. Many rivalries are based off of supremacy in a certain state or in a region. Factors such as trash talking, championship contention, or recruiting implications can play into these games that appear on the schedule every year. There are games in which private schools battle it out against public schools to prove that they have earned the right to go against the public school on the gridiron year in and year out. Sometimes teams play to simply win an oversized, metal stick to keep all year. All of these can contribute to the fans paying their money or tuning in to watch these games in which history is renewed and there is a chance for more history to be made.
In the fall of 2010, Oregon State University had over 22,000 students registered for classes; the largest enrollment the university has ever seen. The University is heading for a mark of 30,000 by the year 2025 (Johnson, 2009). The university looks forward to a bright future with hopes of being one of the top tier Land Grant institutions. However, Oregon State has not always been the large Division 1 School it is today. Its famous mascot Benny Beaver and its colors of orange and black were not always staples of OSU. This short paper will investigate the origins of Oregon State University during the 19th century, rapidly review its growth during the 20th century, and touch upon its claims to fame and notable alumni.
Popular culture depicts Medieval chivalry as a glamorous and high time for women, with knights bending their knees in worship to them in Pre-Raphaelite paintings, and the fairness and virtue of women being celebrated in literature. Chivalry is often understood as the elevation of the lady fair, with men taking upon themselves the task of protecting and defending women. In fact, though, this was not an elevation of women but a limitation of their freedom and an undermining even of their intelligence and strength of will. Medieval chivalry, in essence, subordinated women to men while claiming to elevate women. In Lanval and Laustic, women are shown to have a subordinate status to men in three ways: being painted as temptresses, being subject to protection from men, and being subservient to orders from men.
From a university who stores their late mascot’s ashes in a peanut butter jar, I am not shocked by these two characteristic pillars of Tufts. And as a student interested in majoring in neuroscience and researching mental illnesses and going to medical school and playing on the club field
