All people have an experience of ¡°Rite of Passage¡± because it is necessary to be an adult. What is Rite of Passage? It means a ritual or ceremony signifying an event in a person's life indicative of a transition from one stage to another, as from adolescence to adulthood. In the story ¡°Barn Burning¡± by William Faulkner, Sarty, who was the son of barn burner- Abner Snopes, he experienced his Rite of Passage at the end of the story. Although his decision leads to his father¡¯s death, it helps him to independent from his father. I think he made the correct decision not only for himself, but also for his family and society.
First, his decision is for himself- Sarty. His father, Abner Snopes, always affects him in terrible ways. Not only his father forces him to listen to his own rules, but also he makes him to lie to people and society to protect him. At the beginning of the story, it starts in the courtroom because his father is accused of burning a neighbor¡¯s barn. Sarty is called to the stand, but because the plaintiff is finally unwilling to force him to testify against his own father, the case is closed, and the father, Abner Snopes, is advised to leave that town. Back in the courtroom, his father warns his son, ¡°You got to learn to stick to your own blood or you ain¡¯t going to have any blood to stick to you.¡± He lies to save his father from the society, even though Sarty knows his father is wrong. Not only his father can¡¯t fit into the society, but also he made hi...
In the court room Mr. Hooks makes a point with the evidence he is given and testimonies by witnesses to prosecute Mr. Miyamoto. Mr. Hooks takes some drastic measures by using personal attacks and being prejudice towards the defendant to convince the jurors that Mr. Miyamoto is a killer. During the trail Alvin hooks b...
The young boy, Sartoris, has a kind of loyalty for his father, Abner Snopes. He
I was steaming across the Pacific Ocean onboard the aircraft carrier USS Ranger (CV-61). The sky was as dark blue as the ocean and it was hard to tell where the ocean stopped and the sky began. The captain announced over the 1MC that we would be crossing the Equator and the International Date Line in 3 days and we would be having a Crossing the Line Ceremony which is a very old maritime tradition dating back to the 19th century. It is very rare for a ship to cross the Equator and the International Date Line, a ship normally only gets to cross the Equator. It was explained to me that the ceremony was for all new sailors to participate in only if we wanted to. See, a new sailor is called a wog and after they cross the Equator they are called a Shellback. When a sailor crosses the Equator and the International Date Line they are called a Golden Shellback.
The rite of passage that is most significant to me is “The Setting Sun And The Rolling World’’. The rite of passage for this story is about when you are going to live on your own and make your own choices. I am going to state three reasons why this story is significant to me.
In beginning when the jurors were taking their first vote, he stood against them, by himself, for his belief that the boy was not guilty based on the evidence that the jurors have been given. He even stood up against the others when it seemed that the other jurors had made up their minds about the boy. This is very different from what Juror three did at the end of the play because at the end of the play Juror three saw that he was the only one that still thought that the boy was guilty. After three saw this he backed down and went with everyone else. This makes Juror eight the hero because heroes need to stand up for what they believe in if they think that they are in the right. Also if eight would have not stood up for what he had believed in, then the boy would have gone to prison with evidence that didn’t prove he killed his father. The example of what three did at the end is used to show what someone who is not a hero would have done. Someone who is not a hero would not have stood up for what they believe in, they would have just gone with what everyone else was
Sometimes the question of doing right and following our conscience comes with great consequences and a moral dilemma. This dilemma sometimes brings the option to run away and never look back. Faced with this type of dilemma, we all come to the point where running away from making this decision is the best solution because either choice is agonizingly painful. Sarty was faced with this third option as he was running to the market to buy oil for his father so that he could burn the DeSpain barn.
Rituals of transition exist in every culture passed down from generation to generation; seemingly, through time man has had a need to use rites to associate inductions into new phases of life. A Rite of Passage is “a ritual that marks an important stage in an individual’s life cycle, such as birth, marriage, and death.” (1) Daniel G. Scott of the University of Victoria, British Columbia has stated, “the rite of passage, known as initiation or coming of age, was the central cultural form for the education and nurturance of humans from childhood into adult life using a process that clarified and affirmed new roles and status in the adult community.”( 2)
A rite of passage is described to be “Ceremonies such as christenings, puberty rituals, marriages, and funerals, which we hold when¬ever a member of society undergoes an important change in status within the lifecycle of the group” (Crapo, 2013, p. 159). A rite of passage that is common in my heritage culture today is a Quinceañera. Research indicates this transition is a celebration in combination of rite of passage from youth to womanhood when she turns fifteen years old (“The secularization of Quinceanera”, 2016). The meaning of this event usually starts off with a mass that has a total of fourteen young girls, each young lady signifies a year of her youth. Following the mass is a celebration where the fifteen-year-old is escorted by
Do you know about the Indian culture? Well in the story “ The medicine bag “ and “ Apache girl’s rite of passage “ you learn more about the culture and the stories and journeys of people. In both of the stories it is about beginning the start of a new life. In “ The medicine bag “ Martin gets the medicine bag from his grandpa. Grandpa passed down the medicine bag to Martin which he has to take care of and put a a certain item in the bag. In apache girl she also has to start a new life of a woman. She chooses her medicine woman and starts her rite of passage. She has to show she can dance all night for four days with little sleep. She does this to become a woman of the tribe. Both of the stories are similar but also different. They both were
It can also be argued that it is a conscious effort to choose one’s path. Whichever, one wants to believe, I know that if I had not proceeded through the four stages of identity development, I would not be the person I am today, flawed and happy, with regrets and accomplishments, but most importantly with the love and support of those who mean the most to me.
Have you ever wondered what the “rite of passage” means or how would one consider if they had gone through a rite of passage? It could be something big that could change someone’s entire foundation, such as getting married or if that person enters to the next world leaving behind everything from the world that the individual knows of, afterlife. The novella, “The Body” written by Gordie Lachance, elaborates on this one event during his childhood, with his childhood friends, as a rite of passage between himself and his friends. This event is surrounded by the corpse of Ray Brower, a young boy around the same age of Gordie, Teddy, Vern, and Chris. It was an easygoing, playful journey where they believed that at the end of this
Yes, I believe rites of passage can be beneficial because it can help a person realize their role in society. Once a child becomes an adult in many cultures, it means they now have a more important role in their community, such as providing for the family. It can be beneficial for them to understand that now they are an adult and their responsibilities have changed.
When we think of about rights of passage, most often thoughts that come to our mind are ceremonies like birth, puberty and marriage. Rites of passage are things we experience during our entire lifetime from the beginning to the end. These things, however, are different from initiations because an initiation is something where you have to prove yourself in order to be accepted, but a rite of passage is about a more personal acceptance into your own life. And in my opinion the passage into adulthood is the most important one in a person’s life.
“Barn Burning” starts in a courtroom, with a man named Mr Harris defending his case. A boy is observing this, and he considers Mr Harris his and his father’s enemy. Mr Harris claims that the boy’s father continued to allow his hog into his corn. After several times, Mr Harris kept the hog. That night, Mr Harris’ barn burned down. Mr Harris had no proof that the boy’s father burned his barn, but he knew that the boy had witnessed the fire. The boy, Colonel Sartoris Snopes, goes before the judge. However, he is not questioned. Mr Snopes is not found guilty, but he is told to leave the county. Colonel Sartoris is hit and teased over his
Adam, a corporal officer, starts as man who works everyday to catch the ‘villains’ of society, but is not spending enough time with his family, especially his son. He favors his nine year old daughter over his fifteen year old son. Adam views his daughter as a sweet child, and his son as a stubborn teenager who is going through a rebellious stage. However, when his daughter is killed in an accident, his perspective of family changes. In his grief, he states that he wishes he had been a better father. His wife reminds him that he still is a father and he realizes that he still has a chance with his son, Dylan. After his Daughter’s death, he creates a resolution from scriptures that states how he will be a better father. Because of the resolution he creates, he opens up to and spends more time with his son. By th...
