The Labeling Theory is the view that labels people are given affect their own and others’ perception of them, thus channeling their behavior either into deviance or into conformity. Labels can be positive and/or negative, but I’ll focus on the negative aspects of labeling in high school. Everybody has a label in high school whether it is the “slut”, “pothead”, “freak” or the “jock”; it is one of the most apparent time periods in which individuals get labeled. Students have the mentality that whatever label is placed on them is going to be stuck with them forever, which then leads into a self-fulfilling prophecy. This, I feel, is a fear of being a “loser” that has been instilled throughout years by the principals, teachers, etc. An example of this is the pressure students are given to get a good grade. In order to get into an honors class they need to pass a certain test, should they not get into honors class the following year, then all throughout the rest of their remaining school life, they’ll never be able to be in honors class. They’ll then no longer be seen as the “smart” students they were “before”(even though they still are), they’ll now be labeled as “dumb” and eventually start to believe, and become their label. Another example of this is being labeled a “slut”. When a girl has been labeled a slut, early or in the middle of her school life, the label sticks with her all throughout her remaining school years. At first, she could reject this label, and try to “change”...
In Race, Ethnicity, Crime, and Justice, Shaun Gabbidon explores the histories of Great Britain, the United States, Canada, Australia, and South Africa and their difficulties involving race, ethnicity, crime, and colonization. Gabbidon uses Tatum’s colonial model to explain the experiences of racial and ethnic minorities in these five selected countries and concludes that the colonial model suffices as the best criminological theory to understand the development of racial and criminal issues in these countries. The case that I decided to write about is one of the most controversial cases that have ever happened in the United States. The Roe v. Wade (1973) case decided that a woman with her doctor could choose to have an abortion during the early months of that pregnancy. However, if the woman chose to wait until the later months of the pregnancy then they would have certain restrictions based on their right to privacy. This case invalidated all state laws which limited women’s access to abortions during their first trimester of their pregnancy which was based on the Ninth Amendment of the Constitution. The Amendment states that “the enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people” (Cornell University Law School, 2013).
Throughout the history of mankind there have been numerous cases in which people were victims of oppression or hate. Among these cases the sole reasoning behind this oppression or hate being based on the perception of others. History has shown that society is responsible for labeling groups of people, generally these labels are misleading.
The 1973 Roe v. Wade is one of the most controversial cases in United States in not only the abortion issue, but also in American government. In this paper, I will discuss the case, argument, the decision, and the significance of Roe V. Wade. The Historic decision made by the United States Supreme Court in 1973 legalized abortion on a federal level. As the federal court- particularly the circuit courts and the Supreme Court have become more important in determining American public policies. The landmark case on abortion was Roe vs Wade. Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973), was a historic case in which the United States supreme court overturned Texas interpretation of abortion laws. This decision legalized abortion in all 50 states. The Supreme Court ruled that a woman has a constitutional right to terminate an unwanted pregnancy before the fetus acquires viability and that a fetus is not a person under the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments. The main aim of this essay is to describe two general theories of offending and then consider the extent to which they explain youth offending. This essay will firstly outline the context of the labelling theory then go on to discuss the way in which a label becomes a person’s master status in life. The essay will then compare the differences with primary and secondary deviance and define the term self fulfilling prophecy. The second stage of the essay will describe the learning theory, explaining the background including all the terms, classical conditioning, operant conditioning and social learning theory. Furthermore, it will then go on to explore the research and describe the extent to which both theories explain youth offending. Finally, the essay will compare and contrast the two theories and evaluate any of the assets or implications.
The theory explains how people could be labeled a certain way which would follow them and encourage them to act within the confines of said label or be unable to be perceived as anything but that label. These apparent role models participated in deviant behavior almost equal to that of the Roughnecks and yet they went on to be remembered as good kids. They were allowed to act like delinquents but were never perceived as such because they maintained appearances (good grades, healthy interactions, and lots of participation). Labeling is using descriptive terms to categorize or classify something or someone. Sometimes these labels can have positive impacts on our life or as Amanat’s mentioned that these labels can limit our full potential to do anything by believing that people’s expectation about us is how we should define ourselves. In doing so, we act against our true nature because we’re trying to live up to others expectations or deny their assumptions.
The labelling theory is a significant approach for researchers in an effort to broadening the understanding of delinquency and unusual behavior. Besides, it’s worth noting that the labeling theory was a major breakthrough for many decades, thus its symbolized both theoretical and methodological aspect for criminologist, and in fact, it was known as a theoretical view of crime and deviance, particularly in the 1960s up to the early 1980s. During that era, the conclusion among scholars are that no behavior is intrinsically illicit. Also, “definitions of criminality are established by those in power through the formulation of laws and the interpretation of those laws by police, courts, and correctional institutions” (google, labeling theory, 2016). During that time, the view on deviance was not necessarily narrow down to a particular individual or a group of folks but instead a process of interactionism among deviant and none-deviant acts and the situation in which misconduct interpreted. While labeling theory is a significant concept that emphasizes that social deviations that derived of offender’s being labeling as a lawbreaker; however, scholars who have extensively research this philosophy, they have a slightly differ of opinion of the labeling theory view that is actually doing the opposite of what it was meant to be.
Everyone, at one point in their life, is labeled I have been labeled before. Everywhere I went I was labeled; though, they were different every time. Fat, depressed, and annoying. After this seed of jealousy has been planted, Othello’s mind takes its course in determining the true outcome, with a little more nudging from Iago. The course of action he proceeds to follow is one that not only ends his own life, but also the life of his wife and others. In Shakespeare’s Tragedy of Othello, Othello is a man who is still truly honorable, despite the course of action he takes to resolve his perceived problem.
