Bryon's "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage": The Byronic Hero
In Byron's poem, "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage" the main character is
portrayed as a dark brooding man, who doesn't like society and wants to escape
from the world because of his discontent with it. Through the poem we see the
strong resemblance the Byronic hero has to many of todays popular characters,
such as Batman.
In the third stanza of the poem we learn that Childe Harold is the product
of a long line of nobility. ÒChilde Harold, was he hight-but whence his name
and lineage long.Ó Bruce Wayne who is Batman is too the product of an extremely
wealthy family. As with Bruce Wayne, Childe Harold is bothered by his
family ties. ÒBut one sad lose ruins the name for ay.Ó This line shows that
Childe Harold is upset with the reputation that he has inherited from his family.
Just as Bruce Wayne d Üoes Childe Harold strives to break this mold and
become someone who isn't associated with the likes of his ancestors. In Childe
Harold's case he breaks this mold by running away from his father's castle and
exploring nature. Bruce Wayne on the other hand invents himself a new identity
that differs in every way from the preset mold into which he was born.
In the fourth stanza Harold tells us that Childe Harold is unhappy and
upset with the society around him. ÒThen loathed he in his native land to dwell,
which seemed to him more lone than Eremite's sad cell.Ó Childe Harold is
extremely miserabl...

Ultimately, Oedipus’s decision to leave Corinth hurts him and his family. “I who am proved accursed in my conception, and in my marriage, and in him I slew.” (iv.1184-1185). Now Oedipus has discovered that he did fulfil the prophecy. Because of Oedipus’s irrational decision, he eventually causes harm to his family. Not only does Jocasta kill herself, but he gouges his own eyes out and exiles himself from Thebes like he promised he would Laius’s murderer. Because of Jocasta’s suicide and his exile, he has left his children without their parents. Eventually this will cause turmoil among them. His brother-in-law, Creon, is made king of Thebes even after he explicitly explained how he did not desire to be king. The concept that the knowledge sought can make one desert their responsibilities and hurt the ones they love is displayed by Ulysses too. Because Ulysses yearns to explore and learn, he abandons his role as king, his family, and his people and degrades them as well. Ulysses states that while he is gone his son will “work his works and I mine.” (43). He describes his subjects as “a savage race that hoard, and sleep, and feed, and know me not.” (4-7). Although Ulysses feels as though his son is a better ruler than him, he drops everything he is doing and hands over all of his responsibilities to his son. Ulysses even insults

The Odyssey, written by Homer, is an epic of the great adventures of Odysseus. It tells of the challenging travels form leaving his home to serve in the Trojan War, to his well-deserved return to Ithaca. Odysseus known as “the man of many wiles” endured many challenging tasks as he traveled in search of his once home. Leaving behind his wife Penelope and son Telemachus, he was forced to leave. Around the sixteenth year Odysseus was gone, many believed that their once great leader was left for dead on an unknown country or was never to return to the land of Ithaca once again. Soon the suitors of over a hundred filled the halls of Odysseus’s palace, trying to marry his beautiful wife Penelope. When the suitors arrived in Odysseus’s home, hectic times became twice or even triple times worse. The suitors walked over everyone as if they had now ruled the town of Ithaca. They did not care who they hurt, as long as they got what they wanted when they wanted it. They broke almost every law of the gods; soon they realized they would have to may for dearly. As Odysseus desperately tried to fight his way back to his homeland. However, every time he got close it seems that the power of the gods was holding him back. The gods affected almost every aspect of Odysseus return and travels. They pushed him away, gave him heartache, destroyed his crew, and demolished his ship, they almost got him killed on several occasions and saved him from death. The actions that Odysseus once faced shaped his return home, because of his own choices he was able to return home but it is also what caused him to remain lost for ten years.

This essay is anchored on the goal of looking closer and scrutinizing the said poem. It is divided into subheadings for the discussion of the analysis of each of the poem’s stanzas.
The opening lines of the poem are more shocking than the grimness of the detail because they illustrate the bleak mood of the hero. He is distrustful "My first thought was, he lied in every word" and bitter: "That hoary cripple, with malicious eye". His despair and paranoia become evident in the inconsistency of his thought: if the man was lying about where to find
In this verse of the poem he is talking about how African Americans have viewed the world from Harlem and live and unjust life, how can they forget that.
Oedipus shows himself as being very pridefull when he leaves his adopted parents in Corinth. Oedipus leaves after he is told about his destiny from an old prophet. The prophet tells Oedipus that he will one day kill his father and marry his mother. Fearing this, Oedipus decides to leave Cornith. In doing this he is going against the gods, he is saying that he is not going to let this happen to him and he is going to control his own destiny.

First of all, Oedipus is determined to discover who he is, just like any person who is having problems. One explores the reason behind the problem to set their mind free and feel relief. They try to explore what is causing the problem and when it is discovered it is better left unknown. Oedipus can not accept things as they are and by investigating his past, he is his own worst enemy by destroying his relationships and himself. When he was a young man he heard that his parents were not his real paternal parents, from the oracle. He believed that his adopted parents were his real parents so he moved to Thebes so he would not fulfill what the oracle had predicted as his fate. Oedipus was a character that had a certain way of feeling sure about himself. Many people act this way, but this are the same kind of people that spend their time searching for the truth about themselves. I believe that his pride was his biggest character flaw and because of this, the conclusion of the play was tragic. He feels that he has to take responsibility for his actions even though he had no control over them and fate was to blame. Yet many aspects could have been avoiding with extensive research about his background from his adoptive parents, but because he avoided this, his circumstance determined his fate.

I found that throughout this poem there was much symbolism within it. Identifying that it was written in first person form showed that this poem relates to the author on a personal basis, and that it was probably written to symbolize his life. But when talking about people’s lives, you can conclude that people’s lives are generally and individually very diffe...
