Analysis of Advertisements for Two Different Things
In order for advertisements to succesfully portray a product, they must be directed to the appropriate intended audience. Magazines, in general, are usually geared towards a specific audience with distinct interests. Therefore, the `ads' need to be carefully designed to attract the attentions of the magazine reader. This very concept is well displayed in the two selected, yet very different, magazine ads from the software magnate Microsoft Corporation.
The first ad is taken from Computer Games Strategy Plus - a gaming magazine, as one might infer from the title. The product `Monster Truck
Madness' is a computer video game designed, quite obviously, for entertainment purposes. The second ad is from PC World, which is of a much more technical nature than its previous counterpart. The product in this ad is `Microsoft
Project for Windows 95', a software used for businesses and project development teams. The `Monster Truck Madness' ad encaptivates the casual browser with its bright yellow background with a large purple type set across the top of the page accompanied by the words: `Size Matters". This leads the reader to ponder the meaning of this rather unusual phrase and to further read the smaller print. Here, the reader encounters an irregular font of different sizes to accentuate certain words. While this may be annoying to many, its overall purpose is to create a lively playful environment through the usage of fonts.
This, of course, is an attempt to appeal to a younger gaming audience. On the other hand, the `Microsoft Project' ad does not envoke any visual desire read further into the text. The sections are divided into fine print paragraphs with a slightly larger heading above. Everything is set plainly and unassumingly. This can be justified to mirror an American professional's lifestyle: simple, neat, and organized.
The first four lines in the `Monster Truck' ad: "bigger tires, bigger competition, bigger thrills, bigger mud-splitting" uses repetition to accentuate the fact that this game is bigger and better than all the other racing car games. Microsoft then introduces the product in a rather blunt manner but just stating the title of the game. The reader is then as...

The box is simple, neat and organized signifying the orderly fashion of a company. One clear lacking of this ad are pictures from the actual software itself. It may be safe to assume that the software is just a large array of icons and there is nothing amazing to look at. Once more, as stated at the beginning of the paragraph, a business type is more concerned with `real world' pictures rather than one of the `virtual' gaming world.
Two very different advertisements from two very different magazines selling two very different products, yet all from the same company. While the reader may not be aware of it, each ad differs from one magazine to another.
This is due to the typical stereotype of the persons who usually buy a certain product. Am I saying that all people are stereotyped? Yes, of course. If this were not the case, then ads would not be specifically designed to attract each unique group of people and everything would be colorlessly drab. Ads are meant to be directed to a particular prototype of the buyer, economy relies on this constant method to thrive.
After viewing the documentary: America's War on Drugs - The Prison Industrial Complex, it is clear that the Criminal Justice System is in desperate need of reconstruction and repair with policies such as the mandatory minimum sentencing act which has proven to be unsuccessful and unjust in its efforts to deter 'criminals from committing illegal acts' as seen with the increase of incarcerations of the American people and the devastating effect it has had on those in prison and the family members of those incarcerated.
Within our society, there is a gleaming stigma against the drug addicted. We have been taught to believe that if someone uses drugs and commits a crime they should be locked away and shunned for their lifetime. Their past continues to haunt them, even if they have changed their old addictive ways. Everyone deserves a second chance at life, so why do we outcast someone who struggles with this horrible disease? Drug addiction and crime can destroy lives and rip apart families. Drug courts give individuals an opportunity to repair the wreckage of their past and mend what was once lost. Throughout this paper, I will demonstrate why drug courts are more beneficial to an addict than lengthy prison sentences.
Drug policies stemming from the War on Drugs are to blame, more specifically, the mandatory minimum sentencing mandates on petty drug charges that have imprisoned millions of non-violent offenders in the last three decades. Since this declaration of war, the percentage of drug arrests that result in prison sentences (rather than probation, dismissal, or community service) has quadrupled, resulting in an unprecedented prison-building boom (Wyler, 2014). There are three main reasons mandatory minimum sentencing laws must be reformed: (1) They impose unduly harsh punishments on relatively low level offenders, leading to the mass incarceration epidemic. (2) They have proven to be cost ineffective fiscally and in crime and drug use reduction. (3) They perpetuate a racially segregated criminal justice system that destroys communities and discourages trust
Imagine being a farmer looking through a magazine and coming across an advertisement for Monsanto. One would expect to find an advertisement like this in an issue of Successful Farming or Farm & Plant. However, looking through a Better Homes and Gardens magazine, one of the most eye catching advertisements happened to be an advertisement for Monsanto. Being a magazine geared highly toward women, a person could assume finding an advertisement promoting flowers or household appliances, not a seed company.
Currently there are 80,000 drug offenders in federal prison, making up a little over 60 percent of the prisons’ population (Stewart 113-114). 94 percent of the drug offenders were sentenced under one of the four mandatory minimum statutes passed by Congress between 1984 and 1990 in an attempt to reduce drug use in the United States. Even further, it was in 1998 that “57 percent of drug defendants entering federal prison were first offenders, and 88 percent of them had no weapons.” On average, these 80,000 prisoners are sentenced to approximately 6 and ½ years in prison (Stewart 113-114). And it is due to the prohibition of mitigating circumstances that leads to these situations. The United States’ prisons are overcrowded. New York Times reported that despite the United States only is home to less than 5 percent of the world’s population, the country provides approximately one quarter of the world’s prisoners (Liptak). Yet some will insist that Todd must have been guilty in someway or another, or maybe he was simply an innocent who fell through the inevitable cracks in the system. On the contrary, that is the exact problem with mandatory sentencing, it’s setup allows people to not only slip through cracks, but to land face first and watch their life

The Judiciary Branch of the United States government is responsible for interpreting the law. Those involved with this branch determine the meaning of the laws and decide what to do with those who break them. Because of a drug movement that took place through the 1980s, the courts have severely punished those who break laws associated to drugs; Congress is now trying to step in to change the way the Judiciary Branch is forced to punish such criminals. Congress has been busy the past couple of years evaluating the proper sentencing of those convicted of drug crimes. Many men and women of Congress are joining forces in an attempt to come up with a solution to propose as an amendment. Our elected leaders believe the need for the reform of drug crimes is due because of the number of cases and number of years those convicted are spending in prisons. Because of the drug wars that took place in the United States, the minimum sentence has been set so high today. Drug reform is needed in the United States, and those convicted of drug crimes with improper sentences need to have their sentence reduced. 1

Nonviolent drug offenses in America are unrightly over punished, causing more harm than good to those charged and all American citizens. Drug arrests and imprisonments are far too common and are taking focus off of more important crimes. The sentences for nonviolent drug crimes are far too long and harsh for the crime. Punishment against nonviolent drug crimes are not working and is causing more harm than good. The harsh punishment for nonviolent drug offenses might not seem like a problem at first, but it causes a huge toll on everyone involved. A Comparison of Two Advertisements Introduction Advertising and media are part of everybody’s everyday life, with or without them realizing. Each day we see adverts on the television showing us new lifestyles that look glamorous, we hear adverts on the radio, we see slogans emblazoned on people’s clothes, on the side of buses, on billboards, everywhere!! Big companies know that they need to make their product appeal to as many ‘niche markets’ as possible and they do this by ‘audience segmentation’. This is when companies make an advert so that it would appeal to one type of person, and then another advert for the same product but for a different type of person. Although it is hard to know exactly when there target audience will be watching, companies will spend lots of money researching.
