What is ‘good’ and ‘bad’?). Social Responsibilities are the duties that a business has towards the people who are affected by its activities, for example, customers, employees, suppliers, and the local community. A ‘good’ business is deemed to be one which acts in a socially responsible fashion, and takes ethical decisions and actions at all times. Factories were known for their ill treatment of their employees, long hours and dirty and unsafe conditions. In 1866, unions started to form to improve working conditions for the workers. A fundamental problem faced by democratic societies is as long as people live their lives individually and go their separate ways and be selfish individuals, they are unlikely to meet collectively to resolve issues. There needs to be meaningful unity among people to alleviate this problem to get people obliged to one another, so there is a willingness to sacrifice for shared goals. Bonding of its citizens creates a democracy. Unions seemed to offer the middle class a chance to become a crucial part of fostering institutions of constitutional democracy. The unions have went through several transitions, but have always worked for the working force. Where I got stuck in the topic was when the book switched from Socioeconomic Context to Socioeconomic status, abbreviated to SES. I understood how this concept work from the examples of the U.S families having a baby and the mother having no income and the father having some income would make them fall into the position of their SES being low wage earner. I also understood that income wasn’t the only thing that defined SES but also poverty.

In January 2013 a prominent national US newspaper quoted former Secretary of State, Condolezza Rice, “It doesn’t matter where you come from, but where you are going.” However, In “The Land of Opportunity,” James Loewen discusses how significant inequality is in America. The social class that you are born into will influence your outlook on social class and will also be the social class you stay in (Loewen, 1995. 322). Your social class will determine the opportunities available for you including health, fitness, nutrition, education, SAT scores, medical resources and more (Loewen, 1995. 321-322). Loewen also proposes that the education system in America does not incorporate a proper analysis of our social class (Loewen, 1995. 323). It is necessary for students to be realistic about social inequality because it is linked with history. As students, we are socialized from an early age to believe in the American Dream through media and our loved ones. We were raised to believe our merit determines our success. In reality race and ethnicity, class, and gender play vital roles in determining where an individual ends up in life. The opponents of the use of labor unions for collective bargaining in today’s workplace argue that the irrelevance of these organizations is demonstrated n the recent steady decline of the rate of unionization. One of the main arguments used to show that labor unions are outdated impediments to progress is the ever increasing managerial hostility and attitudes towards unions. This hostility and attitude is a by-product of negativity as well as other factors or a consequence of combination of factors. Managers have continued to show their negativity towards labor unions because of differences in market composition and structures, changes in labor laws, organization size, differences in public policies, union philosophies, and the impacts of unions on wages (Campolieti, Gomez & Gunderson, 2013, p.100).
Over the years, labor unions have changed in the fact that its members have decreased in major percentages and women have become more involved in unions for the reason that, in a regular job, they don’t earn the same salary as a man earns. Labor unions have been losing a little bit of power over the years because they don’t have much members as in the nineteenth century. Working conditions on every job in the U.S. are also more stable, and safer, than they used to be so unions have not striven during the past years.
Of the several theories we have discussed involving commitment, I have taken a particular interest in M.P. Johnson’s Theory of Commitment as I feel it very effectively dissects the primary drives that reside behind one’s desire, or lack thereof, to remain committed in a relationship. In his theory, Johnson describes three kinds of perceived commitment that ultimately lead one to the decision to stay in their relationship. These three kinds of commitment discussed are personal, moral and structural commitment (Berscheid & Regan, 2005).
In conclusion, phobias are a big part of many people’s lives these days and a growing medical condition. People do not realize how badly phobias can affect their lives so they don’t receive medical attention. There are no cures for phobias but there are treatments which will help the phobic get over their fear. I personally believe that if people care enough about their lives, they will treat their phobias. Phobias can totally alter your life so if you have any of the symptoms I have listed above, please go and get treatment.
Phobias are irrational fear to a person, place or object and they are classified as an anxiety disorder. There is a term for every phobia imaginable. Phobias affect approximately nineteen million individuals, with the fears ranging from blood to women and every thing in between. The symptoms one experiences when suffering with a phobia include profuse sweating, headaches, extreme nausea and a variety of other physical symptoms.
Social Psychologist tend to ask questions when they want to answer a question about people’s behavior. Why do people do the things they do? Social psychologists want to explain this behavior. For example, the questions, “why do we hurt each other? Why does genocide happen?” can be answered by testing a hypothesis formed from their previous knowledge. To approach this question, social psychologist can use what they have observed to create an experiment. There are many influences on aggression, such as: the physical environment, wealth inequality, social rejection, culture, and media. Social psychologists use all this information to conduct their studies to explain why people hurt others and how people can even participate in genocide.
