Doing Business in the Middle East
Presently Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen are the 14 nations in the Middle East. The majority of Middle Easterners share in common the Arab culture, language and religion. It is especially important to take note of the Islamic belief. "Islam means the act of giving one's self to God or Allah" (Harris & Moran, 2000, p.385). Visitors and business people must understand the powerful religious and cultural force of Islam to appreciate or comprehend this country. Although this paper focuses on establishing and doing business in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the writers have also given attention to the demographics and culture of this intriguing country.

The United Arab Emirates is bordered by Saudi Arabia and Oman. Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras as-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al Qaiwain are the seven emirates. Most of the inside areas of the UAE are desert, and from May to September in Abu Ddhabi and Dubai, the humidity and daytime temperatures stay around 105 degrees Fahrenheit. These high temperatures keep people inside during the daytime hours, and often leaving their homes in the evening to conduct business. Business hours in this region vary, but are generally from 8am to 1pm, reopening at either 3pm or 4pm and closing at 6pm or 7pm. Bank hours are generally 8am to midday. Markets and food stores are open at the later evening hours when it is much cooler (http://jafza.co.ae/ad1.htm).
The population of the UAE is approximately two million people of whom only 500,000 are United Arab Emirates citizens; the others are from other Gulf countries, Pakistan, Iran and India. Although English is widely understood, Arabic is the official language. Most Emirates, approximately 96%, are Sunni Muslims (the remaining 4% are considered Hindu), and their paramount virtues are considered to be dignity, honor and reputation.
Although mostly hot and dry with little rain to speak of, the UAE has one important natural resource - petroleum. This marketed the transformation of the UAE's economy in 1962 with the first export of oil from Abu Dhabi (Johnson, 1987). The UAE became one of the most stable and untroubled international business centers in the Arab world.

The character of Aeneas was to serve as an ancient version of Augustus, who was to be a pillar of integrity and responsibility to Rome and to the gods: Insignem pietate viram (Ver. Aen. I. 10). Augustus demonstrated his connection to Gauis Julius Caesar, his predecessor and father figure, in avenging his death and participating in multiple civil wars. It is through this action that Augustus is paralleled to Aeneas and considered a modern hero, sav...
The Prince by Machiavelli believed the best of both worlds should be, to be feared and loved by others. Unfortunately this isn’t the conventional way that things happen. If a choice was made, Machiavelli believed it was better to be feared as a leader, than to be loved as a leader. That does not mean he should be merciless or cruel, but that he should be ready to formulate a decision or resolution to almost any situation. It is better to be feared rather than be loved. This point is proven thought the novel The Prince by Machiavelli and “A Bronx Tale”.
The Aeneid tells the story of the Trojan hero Aeneas's perilous flight from Troy to Italy following the Trojan War. In Italy, Aeneas's descendents are destined to found Rome. However, Aeneas does not go straight to Italy because having been blown off course by a storm, he makes a stop at Carthage and allows himself to stay there and fall in love with the leader of Carthage, Dido (Virgil, 103). Dido is a "Phoenician princess who fled her home and founded Carthage after her brother murdered her husband.” While in Carthage, Aeneas recounts the story of the Trojan War. Virgil uses The Illiad as a starting point and pic...
Impressed by Aeneas’s achievements and compassionate to his suffering Dido falls in love with Aeneas. They live together as lovers for a while, until the gods reminded Aeneas of his responsibility to find a new city “Amazed, and shocked to the bottom of his soul By what his eyes had seen, Aeneas felt. His hackles rise, his voice choke in his throat. As the sharp admonition and command. From heaven had shaken him awake, he now. Burned only to be gone, to leave that land. Of the sweet life behind(4.379-395)”. In this quote, the god had a remind him what his duty was and he couldn’t accomplish it if he spend all of his time with his wife. He determines to set sail once again. Dido is overwhelmed by his leaving, and kills herself by ordering a huge fire to be built with Aeneas’s castaway possession, climbing upon it, and stabling herself with the sword Aeneas leaves behind. As they were traveling to Italy bad weather came again and they ended up in Sicily. The women burn the ship but a downpour put the fire out. His father visits him in his dream and say take the rest toward Italy. While Aeneas was away the Turnus attack the Trojan, when he came back he saw his boy in a
Aeneas displays his leadership throughout The Aeneid, proving himself a capable leader of the Trojans. His men loyally follow his orders, and he is even able to recruit foreign armies to fight under his command. His leadership is showcased when he leads the Trojans from Carthage to found Rome. “he asks them to equip the fleet in
On the Mediterranean Sea, Aeneas and his fellow Trojans flee from their home city of Troy, which has been destroyed by the Greeks. They sail for Italy, where Aeneas is destined to found Rome. As they near their destination, a fierce storm throws them off course and lands them in Carthage. Dido, Carthage’s founder and queen, welcomes them. Aeneas relates to Dido the long and painfuAeneas tells of the sack of Troy that ended the Trojan War after ten years of Greek siege. In the final campaign, the Trojans were tricked when they accepted into their city walls a wooden horse that, unbeknownst to them, harbored several Greek soldiers in its hollow belly. He tells how he escaped the burning city with his father, Anchises, his son, Ascanius, and the hearth gods that represent their fallen city. Assured by the gods that a glorious future awaited him in Italy, he set sail with a fleet containing the surviving citizens of Troy. Aeneas relates the ordeals they faced on their journey. Twice they attempted to build a new city, only to be driven away by bad omens and plagues. Harpies, creatures that are part woman and part bird, cursed them, but they also encountered friendly countrymen unexpectedly. Finally, after the loss of Anchises and a bout of terrible weather, they made their way to Carthage.
By mentioning the downfall of his people during the Trojan War and foreshadowing his destiny by "Sparing the conquered" Trojans and "battle down the proud" Greeks, can be looked upon as a reinforcement of his duties not only to his dead father and family, but to the entire Trojan population. To let another character found and rule Rome would just prove the failure of his people again, as shown through the Trojan war. Aeneas feels great pride and energy regarding his role in history and is anxious to continue on his journey. The gods are trying to convince Aeneas to value duty to his city and family, a kind of affiliation or relation by virtue of descent as-if from a parent, above duty to a lover by mere affiliation, or arbitrary association. This perspective on an appeal to authority still hinges on a relationship between Aeneas' desire for affiliation and public authority as the authority of filial priority. We learn early on in this epic that Aeneas is a very important character because of his divine parentage. After all, his mother is the Goddess Venus and his father's brother was the King of Troy. His mother is more concerned with his destiny than with his happiness. She makes Dido fall in love with Aeneas and then he falls in love with the Carthaginian queen in return. Despite the fact that he is happy, his mother is one of the gods working to make him fulfill his destiny. This "destiny" is truly revealed to Aeneas in the underworld when he encounters a few fellow Trojan comrades.
In the poem, Virgil says that all Romans ought to have two certain virtues: he must remain a pious Roman citizen, and he must remain loyal to the Roman race. In Virgil’s poem, he uses Aeneas as a portrayal of not only a roman hero, but also as the ideal Roman citizen. For a man to be pious, he must do what he is called to do and follow his destiny. Aeneas is above all pious. He follows the will of the gods, even when it makes him suffer. Aeneas’ destiny is to lead the Trojan people to the new land of Rome. Although this is tough for him to do and he runs into difficulties along the way, he keeps on striving towards his final goal. Aeneas also, throughout the entire poem, remains loyal to the Roman race. there are times that it would be easy for him to go against the Romans, but he remains loyal and keeps on fighting for the empire. Aeneas is used to represent the ideal roman citizen and the ideal Roman hero, but these characteristics do not surface until the poem is nearly over. As the poem is coming to a close, Aeneas begins to explain how it is his duty to fight Turnus. He does not have the desire to have the battle with Turnus, but he has the desire to follow his destiny and do what he has been called to do. He says, “Hold back your anger! Now the t...
Aeneas is a national symbol and epic hero for his main qualities of pietas, severitas, gravitas, and selflessness. Pietas and selflessness go hand in hand, because Aeneas many times hurts himself just to fulfill his devotion to the gods.

Throughout the epic, Aeneas and his father Anchises are shown to have a deeply loving relationship. During the final moments of Troy, as Aeneas desperately tries to free his family from the horror the Greeks are ensuing on the city, he begs his father to follow him from the city. “’Did you think I could leave without you, Father? / How could such a thing come out of your mouth (A. 2.773-4, L.)?’” Anchises, however, believes he will only be a burden to his son, and because of the omens from the gods, refuses to impede his son’s quest for greatness. Aeneas does not let this stand. He recognizes that he needs to counsel and the wisdom of his father to complete his quest. “’Come, dear Father, onto my shoulders now. / You will not weigh me down, and come what may/ We will face it together, peril or salvation (A. 2.833-5, L.).’” The Romans often turned to their elders and the customs of their families to guide them through troubling times; Aeneas is about to enter into the most troubling times of his life. He seeks Anchises counsel in many moments of the epic. A few of those moments even follow Anchises’ death. “Moments later he met with his comrades, / Acestes foremost, and explained to them / His beloved father’s instructions (A. 5.847-49, L.)” Anchises compels Aeneas to leave the sick and weary on Sicily, under the protection of a fellow Trojan. His appearance, while a
In the super city Dubai, a place which not so long ago was a desolate desert where very few lived is now a thriving metropolis with a population of 2,404,237 (S, Lamia, Al-Neef & b, 2014) .
