BASKETBALL
With the number one pick in the NBA draft, the Washington Wizards selected 18 year old Kwame Brown. Each year in the NBA draft the candidates get younger with high school basketball players entering the draft. As good as they are in high school, the NBA is a completely different level. Kwame Brown experienced the change of the competition level from getting a lot of playing time or playing the whole game in high school to not getting a lot of playing time his rookie year in the NBA. Many high school players do not have the discipline or other tools they need for the NBA that they could get if they played in college. High school basketball players should go to college for at least a couple of years, instead of going straight to the NBA.
The high school competition level is a lot different from the NBA. According to DeCourcy, “Intensity is much greater in college than in high school” (“World of Preparation). In college, basketball is a job for an athlete, unlike high school when an athlete plays the game for fun. The coaches are a lot more serious because coaching is their only job and that is what they get paid for. In college, an athlete has to always be ready to play, day in and day out, no matter if it is practice or a game. In high school, an athlete could relax every once in awhile because his team wasn’t built around potential All-Americans. In college, an athlete doesn’t have a chance to take a possession off or a day off, because the players on his team earned a spot on that team. Also, the game in college is different from high school. According to DeCourcy, “College is not like high school when you run two set plays for offense” (“Hot Spot”). The game is a lot more cha...

...to young athletes. According to Patterson, “The NBA is sending young people the wrong message. They believe the draft of high school students teaches kids they don’t need an education to be successful” (“Going Pro”). This is very true, because high school athletes think if they make it to the pros than they don’t need an education because they will be rich and have all the money they need. This is not true, because if an athlete does make it to the pros than he still has that chance of getting hurt and ruining his career. What is that person going to do than? If a person had went to college than he would have had something to fall back on. In life comes a lot of decisions that people has to make, so people need to think about the decision good and clear and think of the best decision that is going to help them best in the future instead of just in the present.
Haiti is one of the most unusual countries in Latin America as it is the only French-speaking nation in the Caribbean as well as the first to receive its independence. Haiti’s most unique characteristic, however, is in regard to race. “The population of Haiti on the eve of the French Revolution was made up of over 90% black slaves, with whites numbering only about 40,000 out of a total population of 519,000” . This large disparity can be explained due to the fact that, at one time, Haiti was one of the wealthiest places in the world during French colonization. At the time of the French Revolution in 1789, the sugar production of Saint Dominique exceeded that of all the British West Indies, and on the eve of the revolution the colony accounted for more than one-third of the foreign commerce of France. “Saint-Domi...
A key distinction I wish to make here, is that there is not one type of Haitian woman. In fact, there is not one type of Haitian. There are a few ways in which the society was stratified socially. Peasants hold a different social rank from city-dwellers. Post-slavery, this setup was necessary to maintain...
Too many college athletes are given the chance to go into a professional draft that doesn't require the athlete to complete all four years of college and earn a degree. This is a problem because athletes lack the college experience that will get them ready for real life situations as they carry out their sports career. In college they will learn skills and have extra time to be better prepared. Without staying in college for fours athletes won’t see that theres more options for them besides sports. It will be hard for them to see if they have other interests besides sports.
Socioeconomic status plays a huge part in how Haitians identify themselves, and influences their actions greatly. Many Haitians wil...
The ones who believe that the jump from high school to the NBA should not be allowed have various reasons for there belief. The first being, that the players are not physically or emotionally ready for that drastic jump. The players could be hassled nonstop and catch a lot of criticism for how they play or what they have done wrong while playing. Physically they are not ready because, the other players are much bigger, stronger, and faster, this could lead to an early injury or end a career, also the long road trips and back to back game night in and night out. They are not emotionally ready because, they might not be able to handle the pressure on or off the court, they may become frightened and fall into a slump and never make it out. A way to deal with all of these problems is to not draft out of high school just draft players out of college. Players with college experience are ready for the NBA they know what’s its going to be like and have learned valuable skills to help the cope with the new life. Most people feel that the players will become ...
The trend has become money first and books second or never. Most of the young athletes entering the draft early are immature, because of their age, and are completely unprepared for the tremendous salaries they will possibly be receiving. When these youngster see the enormous amounts of money they can be making in professional basketball, it seems as though education and morals become a distant thought to them. Sitting through lectures and writing research papers is considered a waste of time to these young prospects. Education is stressed daily in today’s society, with academics normally being emphasized over athletics. Yet, with today’s growing trend of players leaving early, it seems as though academics mean nothing to these young phenoms. In the summer of 1995, Sports Illustrated interviewed nine highly touted high school seniors about their college intentions. Four of these players expected to leave after three years, four expected to skip town after two years, and only one planned on staying to get his degree. “As all of this young talent continues to skip through college and enter the NBA, the quality of both games will suffer immensely.”(Blum, 43) This trend will eventually threaten the talent level and integrity of both the college game and the pros. The NBA and the NCAA need to sit down to discuss possible solutions to the problem.
“No one blows through money faster than millionaires with nothing to do.” -Unknown. This is true regarding the experiences of millionaires, but is it true with professional sports players? With athletes not finishing college, they don’t get the opportunities they would if they received full education. Arguably, the most educated player in the MLB is Craig Breslow on the Boston Red Sox. He was accepted into medical school before becoming a professional athlete. He had a major in biophysics and biochemistry, which he earned at Yale University. He was asked the question, “Where would you be if you weren’t a professional athlete?” Breslow replied saying he would be graduating medical school or hopefully have already graduated. Professional athletes should finish college before going pro because it secures their future. It teaches the younger generation maturity and the value of knowledge.
Basketball is a sport that has changed in various ways since its invention in 1891. It has evolved and expanded across the United States and across the world. Although it has had its ups and downs basketball is still a sport that is enjoyed by over 250 million people in this world. Today it is one of the biggest sports known and it continues to grow every year with new players bringing new styles and competition. The changes throughout the history of basketball can be shown through its origin, how it developed into a competitive sport, and its evolution into present day leagues.
In the end, goal of everyone should be to help players make the right choice for this important decision. Unfortunately, the NCAA puts these college athletes in a difficult position. Beginning this year, players must decide wether they want to turn pro or not by early April. This basically forces the player "to test the NBA waters" rule which gave them the opportunity to gain valuable information on where they stood in the NBA draft.
The article explains whether or not college athletes are actually students and if athletes are prepared for the real world when they graduate. It shows that athletes are less prepared for college than the general population of students. In addition it describes that basketball and football athletes had the lowest academic potential amongst their peers. This article shows the how athletes really value their education.
Baseball is a game of skill that is played with a hard ball and a bat between two teams of nine players each at a time on the playing field at once. Although many different people play Baseball all over the world it is most popular in the United States. It is so popular in fact, it is referred to as the national pastime of the United States because of the tradition and popularity associated with the game. Baseball consists of many complicated rules. It also has a very elaborate history. One can not fully understand the game America has grown to love until learning about not only the rules but also the history.
LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, some of the most talented athletes to walk the earth. These men don’t play soccer or baseball, they play basketball. Basketball, some call it the sport of legends others say the game of kings, still others say it’s boring, but really no one likes those people, and no one ever will. This is the origin of the game of basketball.
Anne Frank was a German-Jewish diarist. She was known for the diary she wrote while hiding from anti-Jewish persecution in Amsterdam during World War II. Her diary describes with wisdom and humor the two difficult years she spent in seclusion before her tragic death at the age of 15. Since it was first published in 1947, her diary has appeared in more than 50 languages. Perhaps more than any other figure, Anne Frank gave a human face to the victims of the Holocaust.
Many sports were invented to pass time. Basketball, the game, was one of the greatest to ever be invented. Basketball is truly an American game. It is competitive and fun. This winter indoor game has become a very popular sport among all ages.
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl was a very distressing yet amazingly written book. Who would have thought that such a little person could have such a huge effect on the world? Anne?s father lived for many years after the war and made sure that Anne?s diary was published. Her diary was published in 1947 and was then made into a film. This diary helps people remember what Jews had to go through and hopefully reminds them of how lucky they are. By remembering, it is hoped that something like this will never happen again. This book was intriguing while incorporating many life lessons. Discrimination, unfair judgment, and racism are only a few of the many lessons that this book has to offer. With that, after reading this book, we have learned to not take the things we have for granted because in a matter of seconds, days, months, or even years, it could all be gone. As Anne said in her diary, ?In spite of everything, I still believe, people are truly good at heart?.
