My Philosophy of Education

As I start to write this paper, I begin to think of the reasons why I want to become a teacher. The most important reason is my love for children. When I was little, I always dreamed about being a teacher and I would always pretend to be teaching a classroom. As I grew older, I knew I wanted to be in a field that involved interaction with people. I soon began to work at a local gymnastics center where I became a coach for children form ages two to seventeen. At my work, even through the bad experiences, I could not help but love and want to help those kids even more. This was a great experience because I discovered how much I wanted to be a part of helping children to learn and succeed. I have a strong desire to see a child accomplish things, learn, and realize that they can do it.

My philosophy of education would have to be pragmatism. One of the things I think is important to learning and growing as an individual would be hands - on learning. I believe this is the glue that holds learning together. It emphasizes experience and group cooperation. Pragmatism allows the children to be more involved in the making of rules and events, but it allows the teacher to have control as well. I want to be eclectic and to be a well - rounded teacher, so idealism comes to mind as well. It encourages the student to be a truth seeker and allows the teacher to challenge the students in learning. John Dewey was a pragmatist and Plato was an idealist.

My classroom will be very inviting and give off a sense of security. I want children, as well as others, who come to my classroom to do so with absolutely no fear. My classroom will be facilitative (democratic). Students will be active in learning...

Like Rousseau, I believe that children are born innocent, we as teachers will mold their mind. School should be a place where children feel safe and secure. It should also be a place where they learn not only subject matter, but how to love and respect each another. Teaching can be a very hard job, but remains a very rewarding career. With education many things can happen. I want to make a difference in a child’s life and help them realize “I can.” I want to teach children to give all they have no matter how tough things may become or how many times they do not succeed. I want to teach them to love everyone and treat them as you would want to be treated. This is why I want to become a teacher.
