Getting Enough Sleep Did you know that sleep is one of the most vital necessities of life? Laboratory animals die when they are deprived of sleep, and likewise, humans would too (Johnson 5). Many people don’t realize how important sleep is. The man who attempts to do 15 hours of work, in only 7 hours is only hurting himself. This man who stays up late trying to finish his work, believes that he is working hard, and therefore will be able to sleep hard for a little while. This is definitely not the case as he will feel less and less refreshed each morning and will feel more and more tired each day. What the public needs, is to be informed about good sleeping habits and sleeping disorders that go unnoticed. We should wake up to the importance of sleep and how the amount sleep not only affects themselves, but also society. In 1959, The American Cancer society surveyed more than 1 million Americans about their sleeping habits. Conclusions drawn from the study showed that people who got less than 7-8 hours of sleep on average per night, had a higher mortality rate. A six year follow-up was done to the people surveyed. The results showed that men 30 years old or older that got 4 hours of sleep a night had more than double the risk of dying than men who averaged 7-8 hours. The risk was only about 1.5 times higher for women. Similar results were found in a different study of 4,713 people. Those getting 6 hours of sleep or less had a 30% higher death rate (Pressman 29). Although we can see what happens when people don’t get enough sleep, scientists are still unable to explain the function of sleep. Horns are blaring as cars whizz by, a man opens his eyes, his car is shaking as semi-trucks fly by his car that he has fallen asleep in while sitting in traffic. He quickly puts his car into drive and continues on to begin his day of work. This scenario has become all too common with the amount of people that have or have had a case of sleep deprivation. People require sleep to be able to function correctly in the world today. Sleep deprivation is a major problem that is not only dangerous to someone’s health mentally and physically, but is also dangerous to the people surrounding them. Considering things like the fact that the annual number of nonfatal car crash injuries attributed to falling asleep is forty-thousand and the number of fatal car crashes annually is one thousand five hundred and fifty (Statistic Brain). With the car fatality rate rising it becomes easy to see just how dangerous sleep deprivation can become. Many people purposely avoid sleeping by indulging themselves in technology that is easily accessible to them like television, computers or laptops, and their phones, however some people do not have a choice on whether or not they get any sleep due to things such as having sleeping disorders or having to work multiple jobs.

Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky. He went to school there for only a few weeks (Leland, pg.20), but had to move to Illinois because his father had a problem with the owner of the land. Lincolns mother died when he was only 9 years old in 1818, her maiden name was Nancy hanks (Leland, pg.9). She died from the ‘’Miller Fever’’ which is what the common sickness was called in Western America. Before the age of 20 he had lost his mother, older sister and infant brother (Guelzo pg.123). Lincoln distinguished himself as a writer, after he realized that he made spelling his favorite subject. He was then at the height of about six foot six inches and was only at the age of 16 (Leland, pg.21). Lincoln worked as a ferry-man for a person named James Taylor in 1825, aside from that he was also a farmer, cooked for his mistress and would study mostly till midnight (Leland, pg.25-26).

It would be quite accurate to state that the story of Romeo and Juliet's lives were a warning of the hastiness of youth and adults and where rushed decisions could lead, as the two star-crossed lovers eventually both took their own lives; resulting in grief in both households, and a future warning to all to think decisions through, as one wrong choice could cause harm, bloodshed, and even the end of lives.

Sleeping is something that is an essential part of human nature and is a must in order for one to be a functional human being. Sleep is an idea that is accompanied by many wives’ tales, including the ideas that one needs seven to eight hours of sleep each night and alcohol helps one fall asleep and sleep more soundly. One myth about sleep is that during sleeping, one is in a state of nothingness. In truth, however, it has been discovered that during sleep the brain is active, variations in heartbeat and breathing occur, and the eyes and ears are active throughout the time of sleep. These activities during a person’s sleep are important because they help that person be more aware, awake, and alert during consciousness. If all of these important activities occur during sleep, why is it that people are so willing to short themselves of this vital activity? Although much about sleep still remains a mystery, research and experiments continue to show how important sleep is to each and every person. Throughout this paper, I will discuss sleep and the effects that it has on performance and health, especially in college students. A college student’s sleeping pattern is a reliable indicator to their level of performance in the classroom and other school-affiliated activities, as a lack of sleep leads to decreased performance. Sleep is directly related the level of performance and health in an individual; the more rested a person is, the better that person will perform and feel (Dryer, 2006).

Scientific knowledge about sleep is currently insufficient to resolve the political and academic debates raging about how much and when people should sleep. These issues affect almost everybody, from the shift worker to the international traveler, from the physician to the policy maker, from the anthropologist to the student preparing for an exam.
Each person needs a different amount of sleep in order to keep their body healthy and stable. According to Smith, Robinson, and Segal, the average child, from five to twelve years of age, needs ten to eleven hours of sleep each night while teens only need eight and a half to ten hours of sleep each night. The average adult, eighteen years of age or older, needs seven and a half to nine hours of sleep each night. These studies by Smith, Robinson, and Segal are only the averages, so that means that an adult could make do each day on only six hours of sleep while another person may need ten hours.
