In this society people say that everyone is equal, but I wonder if we are equal? People of today fear change and believe that any change that was wrong in the past is wrong still today. I'm here to say that it is time for change. Homosexuals of the United Sates are regular people just like heterosexuals. The question that I have for society is that if all of the people in our nation are looked at as equal, then why are homosexuals treated differently? I have always believed that everyone should be treated equally, and I?m here to stand up for homosexuals. In this paper I will argue how homosexuals are standing up for their selves. They want to be able to have regular families just like anyone else. I will show how they deserve a chance to have a family just like everyone else, and how society should learn to open their eyes and accept new changes that occur in society. They should come to realize that not everything that we fear happens to be wrong. People should be recognized and respected for who they are and not what they are.
For years homosexuals have kept quiet. Some called it ?staying in the closet.? Now, they are coming out of the closet and fighting for the rights that they should be given. The rights to adopt and have a family just like any other couple in society. The American Civil Liberties Union are filing lawsuits against states that still have laws preventing gay adoption and foster care. They are letting people know that they will not go away and that it is time that people accept them for who they are: ?homosexuals? and to give them the same respect that you would expect. By them filling lawsuit and stating their cases they will continue to fight for their rights. A result of this would be The American Bar Association is supporting that adoption is not denied on the bias of the adopting parents. This goes to show one voice can go along way.
Homosexuals should be commended on their determination. There are fighting for rights that they are denied only because of their sexuality. Is that how this society works?
In the book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, the main character Melinda is a 14 year old girl who is struggling to find not only a friend group, but also a friend who will stick by her side, but the year before Melinda was invited to a under age drinking party, and she was raped. She was not safe so she called the police. Melinda's desire to protect herself after she is assaulted does not conform to her peers ideas of what is ¨cool¨ and acceptable and so she is ostracized, experiences severe depression, but forced to understand what true friendship really is.
In the breathtaking book, Speak, by Laurie Hales Anderson, she gives insight into the ups and downs of high school in the eyes of her main character, Melinda. More specifically, Anderson focuses on one down fall, which happens primarily through Melinda “[Going] to [an] end-of the summer party, with beer, seniors, and music” and getting raped (Anderson, 133). While rape victims should tell their story, Anderson rejects the significance of having Melinda talk of her case as a way of showing the consequence of holding your tongue. Efficiently, as a result of her not speaking of her assault at the party, it causes her to go through an important change from the beginning of the novel, to the ending of the novel. According

Speak is a cleaver and an ironic title for a story in which the main character chooses not to speak. The story is written in first-person narration from the point of view of protagonist, Melinda Sordino. Speak is written like an interior monologue in the mind of an introverted teenage girl, like excerpts from her personal diary during her miserable freshman year of high school. Instead of blending in and finding her way through high school. She withdraws and secludes herself from the other students. She calls herself an "outcast." Melinda is so desperate to hide from the world; she turns an old janitor's closet at the high school into her safe haven. She cuts classes to hide in her closet. How lonely could this teenage girl be? All of these characteristics are common in assault victims. Melinda has been seriously disturbed by something traumatic and doesn't feel comfortable talking about it, nor does she really trust anyone. Teenage depression is a common
The idea that high school is one of the best times of life is constantly stated. Parties, friends, and endless days of fun is the American stereotype. These dreams dissipate, though, if you start freshman year with a record of zero friends. In the young adolescent novel titled Speak, written by Laurie Halse Anderson, the reader encounters the feeling to lack the most powerful tool ever given to you: the tool of words. Melinda’s predicament commences after an end of summer senior party, where she cruelly got raped. Rather than sharing her pain with the world, and achieving justice, she chose to keep her secret locked up, as she did not know how to reveal it. Speaking out would have dramatically changed her life for the better. The main theme
Society is created with both homosexual and heterosexual individuals. Previously when certain laws discriminated against others, such as law for women's rights to vote, these laws were changed. Changing the traditions of the country does not mean that it will lead to the legalization of other extreme issues. Each ...
For many, high school can be an extremely draining and difficult time. Many teens are still confused about who they are and what they are trying to accomplish. These mixed emotions are seen through the eyes of freshman Melinda Sordino in Laurie Halse Anderson’s novel, Speak. Anderson uses a variety of different conflicts to symbolize Melinda’s journey throughout the novel from a shy, depressed girl to a blossoming teenager who is unafraid to speak for what she believes in. During the summer before her freshman year, Melinda is raped at a party by a senior (Andy Evans), drastically changing her life for the worse. She loses all her friends when she calls the authorities to the rape scene, since
Florida state law currently bans lesbians and gay men from adopting children. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is attempting to get a case before the Supreme Court that could overturn the law. The ban on gay adoption has been in place since 1977, when the state legislature almost unanimously condoned restriction of the rights of its gay citizens. Legislation on the issue was sparked by Anita Bryant's "Save Our Children" campaign, which raged through Florida and even beyond spreading myths about homosexuality and linking homosexuality to pedophilia. At the time of its inception, Senator Curtis Peterson, one of its primary supporters, spoke to the law's true purpose: "The problem in Florida has been that homosexuals are surfacing to such an extent that they're beginning to aggravate the ordinary folks. We're trying to send them a message, telling them: ¡®We're really tired of you. We wish you'd go back into the closet" (1).
With Europe in control, “the policies of the governing powers redirected all African trade to the international export market. Thus today, there is little in the way of inter-African trade, and the pattern of economic dependence continues.” Europeans exported most of the resources in Africa cheaply and sold them costly, which benefited them, but many Africans worked overtime and were not treated with care.
Note: This paper has a very long Annotated Bibliography. In recent years, same-sex relationships have become more encompassing in US society. State legislation is changing such as accepting gay marriages, enforcing anti-discrimination laws, and legal gay adoptions; the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community is becoming public. Gay-headed families, like heterosexuals, are diverse and varying in different forms.
“Equal rights for lesbians and gay men may be the greatest civil rights battle of the 21st century” (Avery 2007, p. 71). Homosexual couples have been fighting a losing battle for years, and their struggle has recently taken the spotlight once again as a burning topic. Over the years, many people have come to support equal love. However, many Americans still advocate the one man-one woman institution of marriage. The fight for equal rights in general has always been a complex issue. African Americans, women, and many other minorities have had to fight for the rights that they hold today. There are many factors involved in gay activism such as support, attitudes, roles, and the implications of the movement. Social psychology takes a particular interest in gay rights and these factors in particular, as it is a current, controversial topic within American society.
The feud between the Montagues and Capulets- The loss of Lord Capulet and Lord Montague’s children bring the two households together. Romeo and Juliet’s death helped their parents realize how wrong their feud was and bond over the commemoration of their children. For example, Lord Montague want to build a statue of Juliet, so everyone can remember her, and Lord Capulet wants to build a statue of Rome beside Juliet. This project helps bring the families together, and set aside their
Overall Homosexuals have it hard in the U.S. but not only here but around the world, some countries or religions kill people if they are gay. What I think about that is that I think it’s very wrong and people do not realize that being gay is very hard, and they can’t be put in their shoes to see how it is. The whole problem is that people of different aspects or view have been discriminated because of what they believe in and what they want to act in. So what I want to say is that homosexuals should have the same equal rights and the same amount of freedom as straight people because in this world it does not matter who, what you are, but it does matter how you contribute to this world and how people make it a better place.
Firstly, the Capulets and Montagues are at odds with each other. Members of each house and servants break into a sword fight, clashing with each other. Sampson says "Draw, if you be men. Gregory, remember thy swashing blow." (Act 1, Scene 1, Line 60). The feuding between the two families motivates Sampson to challenge the Capulets. Another example of how the two houses despise each other is what Romeo and his friends have to do to get into the Capulet feast. So they will not be recognized, Romeo, Mercutio, and Benvolio wear comic masks to hide their faces. Mercutio says, "Give me a case to put my visage in" (Act 1, Scene 4, Line 29). They do not want to be recognized because of the hatred between the two houses. Also, Romeo and Juliet are not supposed to be in love: "My only love sprung from my only hate! / Too early seen unknown, and known too late! / Prodigious birth of love it is to me, / That I must love a loathed enemy." says Juliet (Act 1, Scene 5, Lines 137-140). They are not supposed to love each other because it just so happens that each of their houses despise each other. It is unfortunate for Romeo and Juliet that their two families are against each other, because this means that they are not supposed to be married.
As the years have passed, homosexuality has become a very controversial topic. The fact that day by day they fight for equality just to be happy, I think it is an injustice that many people refuse to give them the rights they deserve.
